You drop tens of millions to sponsor and promote a WSBK event and what do the local cops do. They back up traffic for miles, pulling ONLY bikes over for safety inspections.

Luckily, someone had some pull with government and made some quick phone calls

We called our contacts in a local Commissioner's of Public Safety's Office and the checkpoint was shut down. We were assured that it won't happen again."

"We apologize to everyone for this, it won't ever happen again."

Miller Motorsports sources first expressed disbelief and then frustration upon learning about the motorcycle-only checkpoint.

"We do so much to try and attract motorcyclists to our event, it's just unbelievable that this happened," said one.

Somebody should explain to those cops where the local economy comes from. Idiots. i can see them going after a guy stunting or some squid actually doing something stupid, but a motorcycle only checkpoint? WTF

Utah is certainly a beautiful place but it's also one of the weirdest fuggin places on the planet!! Weird people, weird laws and a really weird religion. While SLC has less Mormon influence than other parts of the state, it's still just "different"......

I think I've still got some "bar membership" cards in my travel wallet. Really odd!

Hahaha yeah that totally reminds me. We had to buy a membership to enter a bar. It all started at the store, all the beer is less than 3% alcohol. Then we had to buy this membership to go drinking at a bar. I was like membership? I'm probably never coming back to this particular bar why do I need to become a member of this club? Dude said all the bars were like this, each clubs that I needed to belong to if I wanted to drink regular alcohol.

Religion? Don't get me started. Hahahaha

They do that here in Texas as well. Counties and cities have to right to decide how they administer alcohol. Some counties are dry. Some cities are dry. Some counties and cities are dry except for preferred vendors like restaurants (no mass sale from grocery stores or liquor stores).

It's really strange and it's always a very hotly contested issue in Texas. Probably one of the worst things ever is that Texas Tech (Lubbock) is located in a dry county. Students generally go on long drunk drives on Thursday-Saturday to get more alcohol if they run out. It's an ugly situation that has led to many unnecessary deaths.

It's not quite so cut and dry, Jumkie. Drinking is banned on all state campuses in Texas, but at some private universities (even some with religious ties) you can drink on campus and I've heard stories that you can even drink in class.
<
Can't vouch for the second part, but I've definitely had some drinks on private campuses just for the novelty.

When I was going to San Diego State they had a bar on campus. It got pretty wild during finals week.

Obviously common sense went out the window with whomever administered that traffic check point.

We got stuck in that damn traffic jam. The cops had put up cones, "Men Working" signs, and a merge right sign. Everything appeared as if construction was going on, which we thought was an absolutely ........ thing to do on a race weekend. As we approached the slow down area, there were 2-3 state cops that had pulled over just motorcycles and it appeared as if they were searching thru bike bags and such. It was such a pain in the ... getting thru there that on race day we took a different route down some backroads to avoid it if they did that again.

So it was actually much worse than the so called "safety inspection". That should go a long way towards making someone want to come back to your state you bunch of ....... idiots. If i were the Millers, i would use my rather large clout to serve up the head of whoever was at the top of this possibly illegal check point. Do they have check points for mini vans or SUV's only. What about other major sporting event in Utah, do fans that attend a game at the University of Utah, or a Jazz game get stopped and searched after an event.. This was clearly an attempt to harass motorcyclist only. Somewhere in that group of bikes, there was a lawyer who is drawing up papers as we speak, to determine the legality of this ......... I cant ....... stand cops that overstep their boundaries . It reminds me of an incident that happened at Barber a few years ago. One of the guys who rides with us invited his cop friend to go to the races, no big deal. Saturday night, we are back at the hotel sitting around the pool drinking beer and telling stories when the cop chimes in and tells us about a time he catches this young teenage couple parking. He proudly tells us all that he ordered them out of the car, naked as jaybirds while he 'checked them {her] out'. He thought this was funny as hell until i told him, if that had been my daughter, i would have stomped your ....... ..., you power hungry pervert. I was serious and my friends knew it. It got really quite for a few seconds while i stared this prick down. It pissed me off so bad, i reached in my shirt pocket and pulled out a joint and fired it up to show my contempt for the ........ We had been sneaking around all weekend to get high as a show of respect and to not put him in an uncomfortable position, but at that point, i lost all respect for him and was letting him know it. Needless to say, my buddy was informed not to bring his friend to any more of our trips. I have been pulled over more times than i can count, and for the most part, was treated properly. If im in the wrong, i will take my medicine. If i get the feeling im being harassed, or the cop is being a prick, i have no problem giving it back to them. One of the best things you can say to a smart ... cop, is this stop being recorded. They get the message real quick. Those recorded stops are a 2 way street, you can use their behavior against them in a civil suit if they are out of hand.

This country was founded heavily on religious roots so every law is influenced by religion in some way, shape, or form.......we just dont see it as much when they are mainstream and uniform throughout the country.

It is definitely different from most cities, and depending on how the government is set up, you will see that for other things as well. There were stripclubs near where I went to school where you had to have a membership to go into. It helps them get around some laws by making it a "private club".....basically putting it to where they can say not just anyone can come into said establishment (although if you by the membership card, you are in!!).

I think the VFW was able to keep their right to allow smoking inside their buildings because of it's members only type deal and it is not open to the public.

Where in the founding documents are specific religious rituals endorsed? I don't care if Jesus himself (if I were to support such fantasy) signed the Declaration of Independence, religious ritual has never been supported and/or decreed law. Religious freedom and Sharia are very different things.

Laws:  Written by lawyers and politicians, and enforced by cops...  There's a winning combination, eh?

Who pulled your string rage boy.

Is this really necessary. We've had the religious debate many times and it's always the same. Practice if you want to, don't practice if you don't want to.

These things start b/c someone starts throwing rocks at the religious contingent which is stupid b/c the religious contingent never post threads talking about how the heathens are going to bring on the apocalypse. If poeple want to trash talk religion, do it on a religious website where people defame secularists and attempt to strip them of their rights. No one on here has a rant against secular society or science. No reason to bash religion over and over.

Now for the cover you ... propaganda press release from the Utah SS, uh Highway Patrol.

On May 30, starting around 3 p.m., the Utah Highway Patrol conducted a motorcycle-only checkpoint on Interstate 80 near the Miller Motorsports Park. The date and time were such that the checkpoint stopped fan traffic leaving the facility following a U.S. round of the Hannspree FIM Superbike World Championship.

The timing of the checkpoint and discriminatory nature of the action -- only motorcyclists were stopped -- were troubling. Indeed, an already difficult traffic situation was made far worse by the checkpoint.

Although cooler heads prevailed, and the checkpoint was called off after approximately two hours, a number of motorcyclists contacted the AMA with questions, and the AMA contacted the Utah Highway Patrol to get answers.

Below is the statement provided by the Utah Highway Patrol on June 9 regarding the incident:

Thank you for your correspondence to the Utah Highway Patrol in reference to our checkpoint in Tooele County during Memorial Weekend. We have been receiving on a daily basis correspondence from our constituents and from people from all over the United States in regards to this checkpoint. Many were upset and others just wanted to know the reason behind our educational checkpoint. We will provide you a copy of the correspondence we have been utilizing to respond to our constituents. Please feel free to forward our response to the motorcyclists who attended the event and are inquiring about it. In our response, we provide an explanation for our actions, our intentions and an apology for our honest intent. Even though we conducted this checkpoint during Memorial Weekend to educate and save lives, we still had only one fatal accident in the entire State of Utah during the holiday and it was a motorcycle rider. Let me know if you need anything else but I think our response answers most of your questions.

Thank you for your correspondence to the Utah Highway Patrol. I've been asked to reply to your concerns regarding the traffic checkpoint on Sunday, May 30th in Tooele County. First let me apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused you or anyone attending the racing event on Sunday afternoon. We had targeted Memorial Day Weekend to do our best to keep the number of fatalities in Utah down. We identified three factors which lead to many deaths in Utah and wanted to try and make an impact on these factors. The areas we were focusing on were DUI enforcement, occupant restraint and motorcycle education. On Friday and Saturday night the Highway Safety Office conducted a DUI checkpoint in Utah and Davis Counties with the Utah Highway Patrol participating. On Sunday a motorcycle checkpoint was conducted in Tooele County.

The intent of the checkpoint was to redirect as many motorcycles as there were officers participating (7-10), to the side and have a brief (a few minutes) discussion about motorcycle safety issues such as proper displacement, helmets, equipment, and safety of the motorcycle. If 7-10 motorcycles were pulled over then all other motorcycles and passenger vehicles were allowed to travel through without interruption as well. It appears that many motorcycles did not understand they could travel through and stopped. According to the operations plan this was not suppose to create a burden for motorists and was not to be time consuming for motorcycle operators. The checkpoint started at 3 PM and went well for over an hour until the major event ended and a tremendous volume of traffic hit the checkpoint around 4:30 PM. We obviously underestimated the number of vehicles and created an unexpected large back up for motorists. When it became apparent the checkpoint was creating a large traffic backup it was opened immediately. At 5:12 PM the all signs were pulled out of the road and the checkpoint was in the beginning stages of being taken down. It was then determined that because of the amount of traffic, it would create a burden to the public, and the checkpoint was not re-established and canceled for the remainder of the night.

Please forgive us for our oversight. It was certainly not our intent to bring a negative aspect to the tremendous event being held in Tooele County, or to our state. Our intention was to educate riders on safety issues and try our best to reduce the rising rate of deaths on Utah roadways from motorcycle riders. The rate of deaths of Utah motorcycle riders is the only fatality rate which is increasing while every other category is decreasing. We would never do anything intentionally to put a negative spin on such an event as this. It was an honest attempt to try and focus on motorcycle operator's safety. Please rest assured, this has been a learning experience for our agency and it will not happen again.

Sincerely,

Sgt. David Moreno

Utah Highway Patrol

Cough cough ......... If their intention was a safety seminar, why were they going thru riders bags as has been reported by eye witnesses. Also, if their intention was to just pull 7-10 over at a time , why was someone not motioning traffic thru. I guess it took them an hour and a half to realize that every ....... bike was stopping instead of 7-10 every 2-3 minutes.

Your damn right it will not happen again. I would say after the Governor and the Miller family finished making phone calls, You couldnt drive a finishing nail up their ... with a sledgehammer.

"If 7-10 motorcycles were pulled over then all other motorcycles and passenger vehicles were allowed to travel through without interruption as well. It appears that many motorcycles did not understand they could travel through and stopped"

Right...if there was not an officer waving people through, there is no way other bikers are going to try riding through a check point and risk getting their sh^t kicked in by the cops for running a road block/checkpoint.

Nice how they blame it on the public for not following the directions of the check point, since the check point was not announced until you came to it. How could anybody know what the police wanted for this??

They aren't covering their own ...... What he's saying about the program is probably true, but what he's not saying is that the officers in charge were out to get sportsbikers. He was deflecting blame from the officers in charge who were clearly not following the intent of the patrol. Chances are that Highway Patrol never wanted to do the stupid patrol in the first place so the whole thing is doubly screwed b/c they've gotten into trouble over something they didn't want to do in the first place.

This is just government. Wonderful words on paper. Glaring human flaws and unbridled stupidity during implementation. Moral of the story: Don't let the government assign itself new tasks.
