Why do some world champions have sidekicks?

Spies has Mary. Rossi takes Uccio everywhere. Stoner has Adriana (well I guess that one is understandable). Pedrosa has Emperor Puig. Hayden always has a family member nearby. Lorenzo had his manager until he fired him.

Seems strange.

What is "strange"? You don't have anybody who loves you?

You could always deflate her when you've finished, and fold her up in your briefcase - no one need know

From the Yamaha Press release: With the extra points behind him and less pressure for an outright race win Spies kept himself in check for race two, monitoring Haga's position and keeping a steady race pace as he counted the laps down to victory. The American let a couple of riders passed then tucked in behind Biaggi for a number of laps. After the Italian rider ran wide a couple of times, Spies turned on some extra speed to pass him and brought his championship winning Yamaha R1 home in fifth place to take victory.

He was cruising, the commentators had to build drama, its their job. I was laughing at Steve Martin,he couldnt get his math straight to save his life. It was all calculated on Spies and Yamaha's part, Biaggi just kept ....... with the plan. ,Spies was trying his damndest to let the little ....... go and finally decided it was less dangerous to pick up the pace and drop him than have him around. If Biaggi, or anyone else is using painkillers as an excuse for his erratic riding 'i have read that as one of the excuses',that opens up a whole new can of worms. Can you imagine the fallout if it was determined that a painkiller impaired rider cost someone a championship,or WORSE. It would be interesting to know what kind of 'Painkiller' is prescribed by Clinica Mobile and what the printed side effects are.

Yeah - I saw the post race interview and Spies didn't say anything about bike issues. And of course I understand the concept of doing just enough to guarantee the championship. I just have a hard time thinking of Spies being that conservative. It wasn't the dramatic battle I'd hoped for - but exciting enough. When that rider's bike exploded on the last lap - I was picturing others hitting oil left in his wake and totally shitting a brick.

I have seen it out him numerous times. When he would get up on Mladin,he became very calculating, running balls out only on tracks he was very comfortable with.He had the math worked out for the year it seemed.Of course its much easier to calculate when you know the worst you can finish in a race is 2nd.

You're lucky you're an ocean away.

It's very impressive that Spies got Yamaha its first SBK title in his rookie year, learning a lot of the tracks along the way, whilst setting records, and in the 09 R1s first year of racing.
