Reigning MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi says he is looking forward to renewing his rivalry with former foe Sete Gibernau in the 2009 MotoGP world championship.

Rossi and Gibernau were once paddock friends before their relationship deteriorated at the back end of the 2004 campaign.

And their rivalry reached its peak at the Spanish GP in Jerez in 2005 when Rossi claimed a dramatic victory at the final corner with a move that saw Gibernau end up in the gravel.

Fiat Yamaha rider Rossi though reckons he’s happy to see the Spaniard back in premier class action after Gibernau decided to step out of retirement to make a shock return next season.

He will ride for the Onde 2000 Ducati squad and Rossi said: “I am sorry I didn't see Sete on the track when we tested in Valencia because I think it's quite a big emotion for us to be together on the track again after all our great battles. I am happy to see him back. We spoke a little bit in the summer when he was thinking about coming back and I’m looking forward to racing him again.”

I'm hoping and praying for sure. I was a huge Sete fan in his Suzuki and Gresini days, so lets hope he gets up near the front consistantly.

I'd love to see Sete up there battling with Rossi again, but he's been away for a long time, is he ready mentally to take it to Rossi? And he's got the Ducati to get used to as well.
Looking forward to seeing what happens though.

What a candy words Rossi said about his old ...... Battle? Haha, Sete will be lapped by at least 3-4 riders per race, including Rossi of course.

I don't see why he can't ride up front. He was the only rider in Rossi's class for a few years. I'm glad to see him back.

Sete will be lucky to complete the season.

No disrespect to Sete. He's an amazing rider and I like watching him race, but the sport has changed a lot since the last time he rode.

I did use to love the Rossi / Sete battles, BUT, i dont think Sete will be having any battles in "2009" with rossi. Maybe he will make it hard for Rossi to pass when hes lapping him?

That would be cool.

Compare that with Marco Melandri who was consistently over 3 seconds slower than Casey Stoner on the same Factory Ducati.... So not bad for Sete I'd say.

+2 although Jorge has grown on me

Running between 10th and 5th in a star studded field ain't too bad. He wont be lapped but he will masterfully overtake on the last lap virtually guaranteeing some TV time, he will deny Loris, CV, CE, JT etc. a few points over the season...

I agree with Andy Roo, doubtful he will be in the back riding with the Ghost of West (aka Melandri) and doubtful he will be a race winner. If the MotoGP TV coverage was just of the midpack (positions 3-10 roughly) it would be exciting racing to watch, and I think Gibbers will be in this zone.

Hell yeah!! Lets call the producers and let em know how to run an exciting show. Barry Machine will have to get his parade fix somewhere else

I was looking at this thread .... and naturally looking at the idea of Sete/Rossi battles from a different view ......

My thought is that some folk may actually think Sete will be up at P1 battling with Rossi ....... I looked it as though it was Sete perhaps getting near say a P5,6 or 7 , with Rossi back there battling with him ...... this naturally leaves me to watch Stoner churning out magnificent un-hindered laps up at P1

PS. I also think the main problem for Sete could be Stoner ..... ie. wasn't it Stoner who stuffed him up in 06 then went on to steal his ride!!
