I must admit, I do miss the bridge section. I remember a WSB race in 2002 where they had closed the Luffield stands because they had huge yawning chasm like gaps in them but we invaded them anyway due to the horrendous weather. It was far worse than last Sunday and in race 1 Bayliss fell twice but remounted both times to finish an astonishing fifth. The standing water was a death trap and Hodgy testified to two wheel slides on every entrance each lap into maggots and sudden unexpected aquaplaning as the rain got worse.
I like Silverstone. As great as it may be as a viewing circuit, you really wouldn't want Doni right now as a punter, the place looks like a warzone since the Gillet consortium carved it up. "Even Brands Hatch"??!! I love Brands. It tends to produce great racing, has wonderful character and to host MotoGP would be incredible. The irreconcilable dispute over money was huge loss for the Superbike calendar.
Agree about the BRDC and the way that Silverstone is run, however were you aware that due to contractual obligation, the event last weekend was actually run by the Circuit of Wales which is why the Mayor of Monmouth amongst others was presenting the trophies. The only reason that it didn't go to Donington was that they reneged on the payment date.
I loved the bridge section. Was such a spectacular section of Silverstone. Still is incredible that they chose to get rid of it. I'm probably in a minority on this, but back when Silverstone had the old layout pre-1986 I think it was, the flat land made sense because it was a true high speed circuit. Who can forget Keke Rosberg averaging 160MPH in the Williams-Honda during qualifying in 1985. That was the essence of Silverstone to me anyway. But because speed is a bad thing, we kept getting reworkings, and while I wasn't a fan of them, they weren't too bad, till 2009. That reworking was just bad, and unnecessary. It just looks like a featureless wasteland now with all of the runoff areas, and with all of the money they spent, how they were unable to fix the standing water issue is incredible.
I hadn't realized Doni was all torn up. I guess I've got this perpetual vision frozen in my head of Doni as it was 15-20 years ago. That's really a shame as it's such a great circuit layout. Any idea on when or if they will ever fix that all up? Heh Brands Hatch is better than Silverstone for my money easily. It's such a deceptive circuit layout...looks easy until you actually run it. Paddock Bend makes or breaks a lap instantly. Plus Pilgrims Drop to Hawthorns Bend is absolutely terrifying because of trying to carry the speed into that corner.
Very cool vid of some Matra MS670's running down Pilgrims Drop from a few years back.
I think it's sort of like Laguna Seca in the sense that it's intimate, and while not a terribly long circuit in length, it is absolutely challenging in every sense that makes for great racing. Watching MM and Rossi battle around there would be magnificent...which is also why it'll never happen.
Didn't realize Circuit of Wales was running the British GP. LOL that's hilarious. Have they even started digging yet, or are they just sticking to CAD digging?
