<{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Spot on Gaz and Rog, I'm sure Fiat, Dainese, Yamaha and co are all very supportive of this broader market appeal to help continue to Finance the ridiculous 800's and Dorna's ever more expensive tech regs.
Ducati and CS maybe a little more fortunate as selling smokes is a license to print cash......maybe they should bring back Camel, Gauloise..........depends on what side of the political fence you sit on.......for me, if this is what JL and VR need to do to get money from somewhere other the Cigarette companies so they can get out there week in week out then so be it.
Talpa,
I think it also needs to go beyond the 'need' to do it and into the 'want' to do it realm as well (irrespective of any ulterior motives).
For me, it is obvious that many riders just want to ride the bike and do their contracted
requirements with regards to sponsor commitments etc as this is within their own personal 'comfort zone' (be that morally, ethically or just attitudinal). I actually feel that the vast majority of riders at world and likely top national levels fall within this category as they are first and foremost motorcycle racers, not publicity machines.
Then of course you have riders like Rossi/Lorenzo who (apologies as this will likely be a bit controversial) treat the racing as a business and as such are prepared to do more in order to market and sell their brand. If this more means being more 'accessible' or 'marketable' these guys will do whatever is necessary to ensure that they remain marketable and will likely also then compete against each other for off-track earnings as well - just like any business.
I suppose I look at it this way.
Some riders are happy being that smaller provider of a service as they are comfortable and content, whereas others want to be the conglomerate or franchiser, but to be the latter one needs to market well and have a product people want.
