Dani Pedrosa's new highest top-speed at Mugello is faster than the F1 cars clock on their fastest circuit, Monza

Pedrosa ... 2mph faster than an F1 car

DANI PEDROSA had set a new landmark top speed for 800cc MotoGP bikes, breaking for the first time the record set by the previous-generation 990s and clocking a top-speed higher than the F1 cars manage on their fastest straight: 215mph at Monza.

The speed was set by Dani Pedrosa on the Repsol Honda on Friday afternoon: a towering 217.0 mph (349.3 km/h), which was 1.1 mph faster than the previous record, set by Loris Capirossi on a 990 Ducati at pre-season tests in 2003.

In each case the riders had a strong following wind; Pedrosa also had the benefit of slipstreaming Rossi, he explained, adding: “Top speed is not the most important thing. The lap time is more critical.”

Mugello was the circuit at which MotoGP first cracked 200 mph, with Regis Laconi on an Aprilia RS3 Cube in 2003.

i know that the 990s used to hit higher top speeds than the F1 cars at montmelo/barcelona. not sure about the 800s now but dont forget that they enter the straight with a much lower initial speed too!

1. I thought the Honda was down on top speed
2. If I shaved all my body hair and put it in a bag it would weigh more than Dani
3. .... that’s fast

Is that the Vincent black shadow ?

217mph on an 800cc is pretty impressive stuff.

compared to a F1 car, bikes corner at walking pace therefore corner exit speed onto the straight is much slower.
and yes, it is bloody impressive.

Ya thats the one. I have it as a massive framed poster in my studio. Story goes, in 1948 Rollie Free(Aged 48 TOM!!) was making a little over 148mph but knew he could break 150mph and thats how he achieved it. Speed was 150.31mph. He was back again in 1950 on the same Vincent and recorded a speed of 156mph.

No one said the 800's didnt have it. But if the 990's was still here, can you imagine the numbers it can put up? Plus 800 doesn't sound nearly as cool as 1,000..... or 990 if you prefer.

It was either a mistake or a Dorna marketing campaign.

The lap times corroborate Ryder's account of the facts and the information he was given by Vale and Dani.

If they were 20kph quicker down the straights it would certainly mean they were exiting Bucine much faster; however, Friday's lap times were barely better than the race pace in 2008.

Since Dorna didn't publicize the achievement, it seems more likely that the recorded top speeds resulted from an incorrectly calibrated speed gun.

That's what I had been hearing as well. Speeds something closer to 208mph.

Yeah that's what I thought I had heard. It's not 217 but it's still pretty quick.

The downforce-producing appendages would handicap an F1 car on the straits. Bikes are probably much more slippery, even with the new F1 regs.

Didn't Nicky's RC211V out-accelerate the 2006 Honda F1 car from zero to 100?

This all reminds me of Honda's Bonneville land speed record run, where an average speed of around 246 was achieved. Ten years ago we had race cars that could average 242 on a closed circuit! Imagine what an old turbo champ car would do to that record with a few upgrades?

Dani Pedrosa's astonishing 349.3km/h (217.1mph) top speed during the Italian Grand Prix weekend has now been officially confirmed, making it a new MotoGP record.

Pedrosa's 800cc RC212V set the speed during Friday's free practice session, but was subject to official confirmation by timing specialists at Dorna after differences were found in the results produced by the telemetric systems on some bikes.

However, the official MotoGP website states that Pedrosa's top speed has now been confirmed.

The previous official top speed record for a motorcycle grand prix machine was 343.7km/h (213.6mph) set by Makoto Tamada, on a 990cc Honda, during qualifying at Shanghai in 2006.

The Chinese circuit is no longer on the world championship calendar, but the previous highest official top speed at Mugello was 343km/h (213.1mph) set by Alex Barros on a 990cc factory Honda during the 2004 race.

Pedrosa crashed out of Sunday's wet/dry grand prix, which was won by Ducati's Casey Stoner.

The official event maximum speeds during the Mugello weekend are as follows:

1. Dani Pedrosa SPA Repsol Honda Team 349.300 km/h (FP1)
2. Mika Kallio FIN Pramac Racing 348.100 km/h (FP1)
