Make or break year for Spies

According to Lin Jarvis it is

"Except for his race win, Ben's cumulative race results were disappointing, and I'm sure he would be disappointed and I'm not satisfied," Jarvis said. "We expect more than one race win (in 2012) from Ben, without doubt. It's a competitive world, we are here to win, so we want to have the two very strong riders going into 2013."

So what does Spies have to do to keep his factory Yamaha ride. Finish at least 3rd in Championship?, win 3-4 races?, Beat Lorenzo? If he does lose his seat, who would they go after.

I'm quite confident Cal's going to have a good year on the 1000s,

His words after the Valencia test were encouraging,

Would be great if he could pinch either seat for me.

Depending on the results from this test, a certain Italian might start a degree on structural engineering, focusing specifically on 'building bridges'

Yeah Dovi seems like the obvious choice if he can keep pace with Ben on a satellite bike. Especially because Smith will be moving to Tech3 in 2013 so they'll be looking to move one of them on. Hope Cal can do well enough to keep his seat and not have to go CRT.

even repairing bridges would be a good option then.

If Spies got 3 race wins and third in the standings that would be a good year and see him offered another contract. Jarvis is just being a hard ... and putting him on notice that the time for results are now.

Anyone thinking, that this talk by Lin Jarvis may be the start of indicating that there may be some bridge building going on from the Yamaha side as well ? I'm beginning to wonder?

Perhaps Rossi does have an option?

Spies needed to be a better "2nd rider", ie. someone who can mix it up and distract and take points away from other competitors, whilst Lorenzo runs away with it.

Maybe this is all Yam expects. Rossi may be an expensive 2nd rider, but who knows what he will do if the Ducati and him do not see eye to eye.

If its a make or break season for anyone its for Pedro not Spies.. Honda strong armed dorna to midgetize the bikes and he's been on the Honda ... since 2006.

I'd agree Pedro AND Spies curve. Spies just has not performed. But hey!! its 1000's this year so lets wait and see!!

Marquez is to be the new Pedro/Criville ( Repsol require a Spanish rider ).

If his eye is ever repaired properly, I think he is still having trouble with it

yeah but Pedro's been on the factory bike 6 seasons to Spies 1

And Pedro has way more than 6 times the wins

Its a difficult one Curve ..... Pedro is a race winner ..... but not a WC winner. SO far Spies is a 1 off race winner, and not great for the rest of his finishes either. Pedro often comes second in the WC ....... Spies?

There really is no comparison yet with Pedro, for Spies. They are in a different league so far. The only reason there seems to be any debate regarding this even, is that Spies has a huge amount of "Texasness" attached to him, ie. those in the US think way more of him than reality has shown him to be.

But then again I always thought Spies had been brought in with the knowledge that he can ride a 1000 ....... so lets give him another year.

how many years have riders in this class been in motogp with less results than Spies?..thats all im saying, but yeah he's not a midget so.. lets see
