So as I sit here in my armchair, eating doritos, typing away on my Ipad, about a sport I have never raced, I am chastised for being a bitter armchair warrior that doesnt know .....

Down in Australia some buck toothed, big eared 27 year old sits in his armchair, eating doritos, typing away on his Ipad, updating his twitter, commenting about a sport he has never raced and is heralded as keeping it real, calling a spade a spade.

How many athletes do you know that trash other athletes from other respective sports. I cant think of any. I even thought long and hard (like willski) about athletes that have changed sports and tried to come up with an example of them talking .... about their peers. I cant come up with anything. Stoner is a singular classless ....... and a stupid one at that. If he decides to race in this series after running his mouth hes going to find himself in the wall early and often

Thats right. As punishment for his crimes against humanity I declare the buck toothed one must wash down his doritos with Fosters for the next 30 days while we all sit around drinking Boags or Coopers or something like that and eating beer nuts instead of doritos. That'll teach the little bugger!

That about sums it up. What pray tell does Stoners teeth or  ears or age have to do with anything? But while you're on that tack - why not post some photos of yourself so we can see what an Adonis you are. Then explain why anyone should be constrained from giving their honest opinion of someone competing in a different sport? Is there some unwritten code that forbids this? Talk about much ado about nothing.... You got enough sour grapes to start your own vinegar company.

Your state of fitness and leisure pursuits are admittedly irrelevant.

If you wish to get into a semantic debate, calling V8 supercar racing a sport is a rather loose application of the term though, and I think you will find from gaz who does follow the "sport" and is an experienced marshall etc that stoner's opinion of Winterbottom is widely shared. Again, like so many of his utterances which so irritate you, classless or not the comment rather than stupid was it would seem likely entirely correct, and is certainly a reflection of the type of overtaking manouevre prevalent in V8 supercar racing. And sure a guy who won 23 races on a ducati gp bike, and passed jorge at 200 mph at the corkscrew last year, is going to be completely intimidated driving a V8 supercar; if he does drive one I miaght have to agree with you about him being stupid though.

The crux of your problem with him would seem to be him showing lack of respect; why exactly should he show respect to valentino rossi who has shown him scant respect, or fans of your ilk who hate him whatever he does?

With all do respect michael, if he does have a problem with fender rubbing and block passes, then more fool him for getting involved in v8's. That is how the series works whether he likes it or not.

I still like to think his comment was meant to be tongue in cheek though. He certainly is a realist and im sure he knows how this series works, hence my earlier comments on how close v8's are and how far he has to go to become even clise to competitive.

As I said, I think it is a mickey mouse sport in which he would be stupid to compete, precisely because of the type of overtaking manouevres he criticises, having watched moffat, bond, brock etc at some length in my (obviously long vanished) youth race with no need for such tactics.

I don't think he objects to close racing anyway, he gave as good as he got as a 250 rider, but rather to bonehead moves, although he didn't help his argument much with the pass on bautista this year.

Schwantz and Rainey have made a career out of slagging off every rider other than Rossi since they retired...

Casey's numbers are legendary. Considering he did most of it on a Ducati, given the lessons on 2011-12, there is no doubt its legend worthy. Peeps not considering him a legend are thinking about his personality not his accomplishment. Longevity is not a prerequisite for legendary status. And neither is likability. I don't like VR's personality, but his record will catapult him into legend status, regardless that most of it was gained through league favortism. People won't remember this, as people won't remember Ago basically had the only package capable of wining for many years, or Doohan only needing to beat his weak Spanish teammate. People often don't take the time to analysis results properly and simply most often take them at face value. Stoner detractors can thank God Casey wasn't moved to a factory Jap bike after 07, or that string of WCs would have easily been several, its an easy assessment to make. People talking about naming corners, haha, Jesus, Valencia has Torel, and the ....... circuit is named for some no-name 10cc champ named Ricardo. Make no mistake, Casey Stoner is a legend of the sport whether some of us like it or not. He was easily the fastest rider for the last 6 seasons, something not easily highlighted by wins and WCs, this is confirmed by not only his results in poles, fast laps, and track records given the conditions, but by other notables who have commented on Stoner's speed on the track. That he chose to quit early has zero barring on his results thus far. There is no way we can make a case, as has been attempted here, to discredit his legendary status if we are going to bare in mind other legends of the sport against Stoner's record. Sure, some people feel its way too soon to be calling the guy a "legend" given the circumstance of his early departure, but even this lets look at it clearly, its NOT like he got caught cheating on the bike or worse given special dispensations that directly enhanced his performance leading to results. Make no mistake, given a bit of time, and some real impartial analysis of his record, the man is a MotoGP legend (just one that a lot of people don't like or want to accept).

Great post!

I think there might be one or two things purposefully overlooked but it's overall premise is sound.

Weird, it says he rode a 125 in 2002.

True... a journo's slip. Anyway the interesting part is not the 125 and 250 days, but the comments about the Honda and the Ducati.

I find interesting the way he credits his team, which doesn't sound like the usual pr talk. And he also seems to defend Preziosi when he says the CF chassis worked fine.

Ducati not only lost the best rider in 2011, they also lost one of the very best teams in MotoGP. Now set to become Marquez's team...

J, being totally fair Stoner has always tended to credit his teams (including LCR) and this is something that seems so often overlooked when he is mentioned. Yes, he has at the same time often been vocally critical of such things as Tyre suppliers or the Marlboro back office shenanigans, but his team has been sacrosanct in most instances, and specifically in his MGP time.

I do strongly feel that his team is the over looked or under rated aspect to his success (not by Stoner I may say) and feel that the teaming of Gabbarini etc with MM will be interesting in how that develops as I do rate the team that supported Stoner as equal to any.

Thanks for the link J4rn0

Good read. The Josh Hayes interview was interesting as well.
