Laguna Seca Cancelled For 2014

Same here - I am taking it at face value, for the moment. The person passing the information has no vested interest in doing the SCCA down - completely the opposite, in fact. They stand to lose out due to the loss of GP and SBK.

SCCA has some real issues they are struggling with, not least is a continuous string of lawsuits from the millionaires that surround the circuit that have been trying to get it shut down for ever - then there are the environmentalists and the developers, all of whom want, for their own reasons, to shut down LS as a race venue.

It's fine to be skeptical of the reasons Dorna pulled out of LS, but the reasons given make a lot of sense, given the popularity and location of the circuit and the history of GPs at LS. It isn't like Dorna were milking the circuit, they already bent over backwards to make sure a GP happened in Cali - to pull the plug so unceremoniously does speak to there being a more pressing reason - and trying to screw them would certainly come under that heading.

If I find out more, I will post it - so treat it as a scurrilous rumour, but one that does seem to make sense of the situation.

One thing that will point to the validity is when the 2014 SBK schedule comes out... if LS is on the calendar, then it was all ......... If not...

I find this hard to fathom. It's not like the track is surrounded by residential property's, well not that i noticed. Its a little bit in the middle of nowhere. Right next door are gun shooting ranges and the surrounding area including the track parking and RV parks are all owned by local authority which is rented to the track during race weekends. From what i saw the track doesn't really interfere with the local area at all. In fact quite a lot of the local area is farm land. The local town Monterey gets quite a bit of passing trade including many visitors to its world renound aquarium. I cant see this track causes any problems for the locals what so ever.

No idea - it was on my bucket list - I've never been there.

but, read pretty much anything about the SCCA and the subject of lawsuits by environmentalists and property-owners is high on the list. And being that the US doesn't have 'loser pays' costs, any .... with an axe to grind can take them to court.

I've only been to Laguna three times and my only info on this matter comes from the same stuff you lot read. But I do know one of the guys who runs the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, and he tells me there are a number of wealthy, powerful neighbors who do not find the same pleasure in racing's aural aspect. MotoGP may bring in a lot of money to local businesses, but the people who turn up for Monterey Historics are some of the wealthiest, most powerful, and best-connected one-percenters in the country. Wealth has a whole other connotation when you're willing to no only drive but race your multimillion-dollar, one-of-one, historically significant race car. And even these people have to tip toe around the local politics.
