Laguna Seca Cancelled For 2014

Making it plush enough for the MotoCircus (the same people who fret over Laguna's T1) would probably cost a small fortune.  :/

Not to mention the cost of adding 5-star gold standard toilets and a 6 lane highway into the track to avoid traffic, otherwise we can count out Migs and BM from ever attending.

Ah yea, for those with delicate sensabilities.

I read that Laguna Seca pay paid Dorna $9000,000 to host the motogp event. Dorna then requested an extra $800,000 to continue hosting. I believe the track keep the gate money so attendance wouldn't be of any real financial interest to dorna. I would like to know dorna justification in a rise why above the rate on inflation. Sounds like good old fashioned extortion to me. Maybe Jerez needs another bail out so the lovely Dorna though they would play Robin Hood by robbing the rich to pay the poor.

As for facility's, i wonder how many of the nay sayers here have actually been themselves. I have twice and love the place. I've never had to que long for anything and everything you would possibly need is there. If you want to talk about bad facility's or think guna's were bad you should have experienced Donny. There is one small toilet block at starkies to service everyone from the crainer curves to mclarens which is tens of thousands. Most people just pissed on the fence then went back to watching the great racing on one of the worlds greatest tracks. I thought that's how us bikers and race fans roll?

Ha! Great memories my friend. That'll be the fence you tore a hole in to take a photo in front of those two twats who funnily enough made themselves very scarce immediately after that.

The final GP there after Simon Gillett had carved up the place was like the Western Front.

Makes a nice-sounding conspiracy, but this was what the chairman of the LS commitee had to say about it - doesn't sound like extortion to me:

<p style="font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(68,68,68);Campbell says Laguna Seca owes Dorna $2.5 million and is in the process of paying it off.
<p style="font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(68,68,68);“Dorna is the best organization we have ever worked with and we consider them family,” says Campbell. “But they have investors and people are holding them accountable.”
<p style="font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(68,68,68);According to Tammy Blount, president and CEO of the Monterey County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, MotoGP brings in about $100 million in revenue for local businesses.
<p style="font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(68,68,68);“Being that the event isn’t until July, we have some time to replace it and I don’t think we are going to see a $100 million loss,” she says. “But recouping it from a loss on that kind of scale from the demographics that MotoGP brings to the Peninsula and the corporate sponsorships will definitely be a notable difference.”
<p style="font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(68,68,68);Despite Dorna also owning World Superbike, which returned to Monterey after a nine-year absence, its contract is good for three years. Campbell says the fallout with MotoGP will not affect the future of the World Superbike schedule.
<p style="font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(68,68,68);...
<p style="font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(68,68,68);Campbell acknowledges the drop of Grand Prix will have a major effect on the local economy as hotels, restaurants and other businesses all profit from one of the largest events every summer.

So, your tinfoil flat cap can be left at home. It isn't a conspiracy or extortion, it is the price Dorna charge for sanctioning fees. Or should they cut LS a break because they are nice guys? Perhaps some of those local businesses who benefit to the tune of $100M could have chipped in and made the event happen?

Sounds like an economic ...... to me, not Dorna doing anything out of line.

Just as an FYI, Aragon pays 6.5M euros a year to host a full MotoGP round.

<span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:13px;background-color:rgb(252,252,252);The sanctioning fee Laguna Seca paid to hold the MotoGP race is believed to be lowest on the calendar, and was the main reason why Moto2 and Moto3 (and previously, the 250cc and 125cc classes) never joined MotoGP at Laguna Seca.

The problem with facilities is the race team facilities, not the shitters and burger vans.

<p style="font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(68,68,68);Another issue facing Laguna Seca is the facility can’t properly support the MotoGP other race classes of Moto2 and Moto3, while IMS and COTA have enough space to hold all three classes.
<p style="font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(68,68,68);“For us to bring Moto2 and Moto3 here is an additional $1.6 million,” says Campbell. “We are reevaluating future plans to have GP return to Laguna Seca. We’re just taking a breather.”
<p style="font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(68,68,68);
<p style="font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(68,68,68);

Which would still make the full fees payable by the non-profit $3.3M, against the 6.5M Euro (or US$8.9M) paid by Aragon. Yep, Dorna are certainly holding LS toes to the fire on those fees, aren't they. How could they - cut them a 5.5M break??? .......s!

How much does Jerez pay to host motogp ? LS owe dorna 2.5 mil ? I'm not surprised having to pay 9 mil to host. So dorna aware LS struggle to pay this fee so put the price up another 800,000. So if the area earns 100 mil, the gp hosting fee is about 10% of the whole area's revenue. Is this 100 mil turn over or profit ? and where did you come by this information ?

You didn't read it properly - in fact, you got nearly every single fact wrong. Been drinking?

They pay $900k, the increase was another $800k to $1.7M. Which isn't anywhere near 10% of US$100M.

If LS were to take Moto2 and Moto3, they would have to pay $3.3M - Aragon pays 6.5M euro, which is US$8.9M. LS,  being non-profit, gets a huge discount from Dorna. Every circuit with a new contract has had the $800K price increase, which is around 10% of a full-priced contract. Obviously it is nearly double for LS, but they are only paying $900k, vs nearly $9M for other circuits.

I got it off the internet - you should try it, you might like it.

Attendance dipped this year and

the licensing fee with Dorna is going up by $800,000 next year. It takes

about $9 million to put on the event, Campbell said.

Granted it doesn't give a breakdown of costs and fee's with the 9 mil but for a raise of 800k would suggest a large portion of that is dorna's fee.

From Laguna CEO Gill Campbells own lips: "<span style="font-family:Arial, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif;“Not only do I need to clear up for 2013, but I have to guarantee [Dorna] $3 million for a sanctioning fee for 2014. And quite frankly in this economy and without the kinds of subsidies that other tracks get and other governments give throughout Europe, we don’t have that luxury."

<span style="font-family:Arial, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif;Your $9M figure is .........

$900,000 Rog. Pittance compared to every other venue. (maybe you just transposed a number but...)

The word is... from someone I know that has the inside track on things at Laguna, that the SCCA lied and hid their earnings from Dorna to keep getting the massively discounted sanctioning fee. Apparently MotoGP at Laguna is profitable, but when you cook the books to show it isn't, and get caught, Dorna doesn't take it well.

There won't be any WSBK either.

Interesting, but for me to treat that with any credibility i would need a little more than hearsay from an unidentified person .

Same here - I am taking it at face value, for the moment. The person passing the information has no vested interest in doing the SCCA down - completely the opposite, in fact. They stand to lose out due to the loss of GP and SBK.

SCCA has some real issues they are struggling with, not least is a continuous string of lawsuits from the millionaires that surround the circuit that have been trying to get it shut down for ever - then there are the environmentalists and the developers, all of whom want, for their own reasons, to shut down LS as a race venue.

It's fine to be skeptical of the reasons Dorna pulled out of LS, but the reasons given make a lot of sense, given the popularity and location of the circuit and the history of GPs at LS. It isn't like Dorna were milking the circuit, they already bent over backwards to make sure a GP happened in Cali - to pull the plug so unceremoniously does speak to there being a more pressing reason - and trying to screw them would certainly come under that heading.

If I find out more, I will post it - so treat it as a scurrilous rumour, but one that does seem to make sense of the situation.

One thing that will point to the validity is when the 2014 SBK schedule comes out... if LS is on the calendar, then it was all ......... If not...
