Where does it say this has anything to do with the facilities? And haven't the facilities been good enough to run this race the past 9 times?

I guess there are other tracks in the States that have far better facilities:

The laguna facilities have been reported to be crap or sub-par vs other GP tracks for a while....

Yup, and I have been desiring to get there since the 80s.

I know. But 1) that is not the reason for pulling the plug on the event now 2) in my opinion, unless the facilities lead to objectionable safety hazards, they are of minor concern compared to the attractiveness of the track to the spectators.

Here in the UK the facilities were pretty awful for a long time, all you ever heard  after a meeting was how .... the facilities are for the paying public, people voted with there feet and the crowds/profits  dropped, when the facilities improved the spectators returned, Laguna say they have been working at a loss for years and get no state help, if they improved the facilities for spectators, surely they would increase there profits and need less state help.

I've never been to Laguna, or the US for that matter. But as an armchair spectator I'm gutted. This is one of my favourite tracks.

Too Bad, as Southern Cal is a great place for MotoGP.  But you gotta face the facts.  The facility was bush league and the track was to small.

I don't think Monterey qualifies a southern California.

I love all this criticism of Laguna facilities by people who've never been there. They have clean and plentiful bathrooms for everybody. The food selection put COTA to shame. You don't have to be a millionaire to get into the paddock and the support staff doesn't make you feel like a second citizen just for attending the race like the COTA staff did when I attended Austin this year. Yes I attended both races this year, even though I said I was going to boycott Austin, and hands down, the most enjoyable of the two was clearly Laguna. For those of you that ride your bikes to a race venue, the ride in through Barloy Canyon to get into the circuit was worth the price of admission to Laguna.

In all fairness, I have not been since 1993 and the facilities were not very good in my opinion, two friends of mine who went last year and 93 said it was about the same.

Laguna were not willing to kowtow to Dorna's extortion.  .... it, I wish more circuits did this as Dorna (Carmelo) keeps all the TV revenues while making the events for the circuits impossible to turn a profit.  The tradition of GP that this circuit brought to the fans of the sport was of no value to Dorna.  We continue to get ...... by Dorna, but most simply see it as conspiracy when point it out.  I called it here, I said Dorna's public signals regarding Laguna Seca were simply hard tactics to extort money from the American circuits.  Indy and Austin were willing to .... their tax payers out of money to line Carmelo's pockets and the pockets of investors.  DMG (AMA promoters) tried the same .... with Miller Motorsports park, and the round was canceled because the circuit said enough is enough (unfortunately the owner of the track died).  Eventually the sanctioning fee that DMG demanded was mitigated by negotiations, and the series has returned there.  Dorna were obviously pitting Indy against Laguna.  One track almost nobody likes, while the other wildly popular with fans and the paddock, the one that made the executives of Dorna rich won out.  What does this say for their interest in the fans?   Ah, but MotoGP is a business, right?  Of course, that is why they would never influence the competition...and engage in king building. (sarcasm)

For those of you interested in how sports league owners operate, here is a great article.  Dorna are not that much different than what is described here, and the fact is that most local governments make sweet deals with league executives that are lucrative for the principle parties at the expense of ....... tax payers.  As you read this article one might think its would be impossible for taxpayers to get ...... this way in western democracies, but it happens as the norm not the exception.  Its not different with Dorna, nor for other European nations.  They sell their people short here as they do across the pond.

Geo, our country is certainly experiening a low point, our two party system and the democratic process has been gamed, given our govs 'shut down' and looming 'debt ceiling' issues which is crisis created by our officials, its only gonna get worse for the common man as civil rights & protections will continue to erode while surely the concentration of wealth at the top will solidify. The fragmentation of our electorate has been used against us quite effectively.

Its official now. There will be no Moto GP at Laguna Seca in 2014. Mazda released a press statement Monday in which they cited an increase in the event fee of $800,000 and a lack of state support, which both Indy and Austin receive from their states, as the principal reasons behind the decision. The event has apparently lost money for the past four years and SCRAMP simply can no longer afford the loss. I'm going to miss this event a lot, but I have great memories of the GPs there going back to the days of Spencer, Rainey, Lawson and Schwantz.

....!  that's my favourite circuit and I'll never get to go

I assure you that no one who attends the Laguna GP race does it because of the facilities.  No one comes because the facilities are good, no one leaves because they are bad.  It's Laguna Seca, the attraction has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the shitters.  I've been to all three US venues.  Laguna stands out for all the right reasons.  I don't remember even taking notice of the facilities to be perfectly honest.  The core following at Laguna have been attending for years and would continue to attend no matter what so long as the event was taking place.

I've also been to GP at Silverstone.  It's a nice place no doubt but Laguna it's not.

Austin is a .... event.  The organizers are thieves.  The place is poorly run.  The parking is awful.  The food was bad and not nearly enough.

It is an interesting read, but the article does not accurately characterize the world of professional sports. The finances are not a problem. The stadiums generally draw direct investment from support industries like restaurants, hotels, bars, etc. The stadiums create local jobs. Furthermore, the NFL is not a monopoly. Claiming the NFL is a monopoly is like claiming Chevrolet is a monopoly b/c they are the only company allowed to build Corvettes. The NFL compete in the sport-entertainment business, which is one of the most competitive marketplaces on earth. Even within the world of football, the NFL competes with the NCAA and other small leagues like the CFL and Arena Football.

The primary problem is that one business is provided with massive subsidies, while other businesses pay taxes to fund the subsidies. The arrangement is essentially a violation of Equal Protection, but it has become so commonplace, that the Federal Government does not even bother to regulate the deals or themselves.

You may remember that I am staunchly opposed to COTA, but that was a different arrangement. Texas is basically paying F1 (a foreign company) to penetrate the US sports-entertainment marketplace, and they are using fanciful revenue projections to make the track appear as though it is a windfall profit for the taxpayer. In reality, a majority of the tax revenue to recharge the special event fund is coming from Texas residents. The impact of one F1 race in Texas is relatively valueless compared to a sports franchise.

I been to Silverstone as well and thank god it's not Laguna.

I've been to both Silverstone and Guna and COTA.

My take, Silverstone has been brought bang up to date for eff wun! Shame the wing isn't big enough for the circus! The camping facilities are first class showers toilets etc all in brick built purpose blocks, and constantly been cleaned.

Guna fantastic place and track The facilities are okay round the track better near the camping areas, FFS I took a shower! It is usually babywipe baths at the track for me, ask anyone who knows me.

COTA the only one I had to use a porta ........

Make your own judgements ;)
