Grand Prix Special Announced

MONTEREY, Calif., (April 29, 2009) – Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca today announced the details of the “Grand Prix Special.” A “Grand Prix Special” ticket will give race fans at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix the opportunity to not only experience some of the best two-wheel racing in the country, but also take a lap of the legendary Monterey Peninsula track led by some of the stars of the MotoGP World Championship.

After weeks of planning, some of motorcycling’s largest Manufacturers -Yamaha, Honda, Ducati, and Suzuki are slated to lead fans on a memorable ride around the 11-turn, 2.238-mile track. Track officials also revealed they are talking to manufacturers Kawasaki, BMW and Buell about participating in the Friday-morning Fan Lap opportunity. It is anticipated that the MotoGP riders will be leading the parade ride.

The “Grand Prix Special” includes a three-day general admission ticket, reserved grandstand seating in turn four for Saturday and Sunday, preferred motorcycle-only parking, goodie-bag from each participating brand and a lap of the track on Friday morning, which is slated to take place between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.. The cost is $175, a $215 value.

“We’re delighted that the manufacturers are giving the fans this opportunity,” said Gill Campbell CEO/general manager, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. “I think I’m going to have to go and get a Yamaha for the weekend so I can ride around the track with Colin Edwards or Jorge Lorenzo. It just doesn’t get any better than that.”

The first 500 race fans that purchase the “Grand Prix Special” ticket package also will receive a limited-edition print of Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner battling in Turn 11 in their epic race for last year’s title, signed by the photographer.

The “Grand Prix Special” goes on sale 8:00 a.m. PST Thursday, April 30 and is expected to sell out fast. For tickets and more information call the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca ticket office at (800) 327-7322.

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was established in 1957. The world-renowned raceway has been operated since its inception by the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), a not-for-profit 501C(4) corporation. Each race season, SCRAMP donates its net proceeds to the volunteer groups that help put on the races.

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca’s world-class 2009 racing schedule includes the Verizon Festival of Speed presented by SPEEDCOM featuring Rolex Grand-Am Sports Car Series May 15-17, Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix featuring MotoGP World Championship July 3-5, the 36th Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races August 14-16 and the Monterey Sports Car Championships featuring the American Le Mans Series October 9-11.

Just make sure you wear your I Hate Dani shirt.

Notice the carefully phrased language.
NOWHERE does it say your heroes will be on or anywhere near a motorcycle!

Rossi will borrow the Popemobile, and Nicky will drive that old Dodge Charger that Uncle Cletus ran 'shine with back in the day.

i got a question for the guys who have been to the redbull gp....is it better to just get general admission tickets and post up somewhere trackside or should i get tickets for grandstand seating?

I suppose this'll be the only time we'll ever see a Buell on track at the same time as Motogp riders.

If it's your first time you will want to walk the track. I think one of the best spots to sit is the hillside where the score tower is. You can walk over catch a bit of the corkscrew then walk over to the other side and see about 2/3 of the track. That being said, I think I might get grandstand tickets this year just to see what it's like.

Agree, being on top of the hill gives some great viewing options - also last time I was there it was
103ºF, so it was nice to get some shelter under the trees. I've sat in the grandstand on the main straight, where you can also watch the screen opposite, and also at turn 4, where there is another viewing screen. The other great place is further down the hill where they come hammering under the bridge before the Wayne Rainey curve I think it's called. I watched a supersport race from here, and this was where Stoner was getting seriously out of shape, and saved it on his knee a few times in last years epic race.

I love the place, and especially the surrounding country, which is why I say maintain it's such a great race to visit. But then I'm very biased because I love that part of the world. Drive out of Laguna, and you're thinking to yourself - do I head for the mountains, the coast, the desert? Drive out of Donington and you feel like slitting your wrists or heading straight for the Samaritans.

Is it that bad?

But yes, Laguna is a beautiful area. Carmel is a mini paradise.

To IsSoHot (BTW, WTF with that name, sounds ...), you will not need a granstand seat. Its rather useless since you can stand right next to it or behind them and get the same view minus the sweaty fat slim balls seating 2cm next to you. Get general admission. Sit on the hill.

Geonerd, I thought the same thing but I can't see them hyping this up and then having them on the back seat of some car. I'm hoping that they will ride bikes of their respective manufactures, kinda like a commercial. Undoubtedly they will have cops all around them, but hey, I think I have an extra cop outfit laying around somewhere (my chick likes the roll play)
