Honda Repsol Team

Who was then ?. Even if you want to ascribe Rossi being taken out by Elias as being due to no fault of his that is counterbalanced by Nicky being taken out by Pedrosa. Otherwise being more consistent over a whole season is the same as being better, imo only of course. Valentino had also pretty much dismissed Nicky as a threat when he decamped to Yamaha, saying they wouldn’t win against him as I recall. Maybe Capirossi getting injured could be considered lucky for Nicky, but I am not sure he had what it takes to seal the deal over a whole season, and he was dominated by Stoner the next season.
Hardly what I would call the best rider, he was in the right place at the right time though I grant you that, same as Mir and Schwantz in my opinion !

I rate Schwantz well above Mir. The Zuk for much of his time was behind the Yam and Honda. He pushed it hard and was consistently pushing for wins against some very good riders on imo better bikes. Seems like a great bloke too 😎

Schwartz also won 20 odd races in total at a time there were several other very good riders, some of them all- time greats, in the field and was on a Suzuki as well as you say. I tend to also rate KRJr’s title win on a Suzuki highly.

I rate Nicky above Mir as well.

I thought Simoncelli took the line through the corner he was always going to take, which was a legitimate racing line on which he was going to easily make the corner, so the issue was who was in front,. There was also some suggestion at the time that Dani hit a bump which led to him going into the corner hotter than he intended .

Yes, as I watched it, I thought it appeared as if Dani went in hot and that's why he stood the bike up. If he wasn't hot I thought he could have held his line and made the turn but these are merely the ramblings of someone who hasn't a clue of what riding those bikes at that level is like.

As for Rossi, he was playing pinball and Sete was the bumper.

Rumor mill

Rumors coming from Italy; apperently LCR team boss and owner, Lucio Checinello has been approached by the Honda big bosses and offered the chance to take Alberto Puig place Ie. Take the helm of the official HondaHRC team
It could also be a way of keeping LCR with Honda

They have 4 bikes and at least 1 test rider... given the concessions, they should have plenty of data to develop a bike. Honda needs to develop an aero package, it seems most of the teams have hired people from F1 who have experience developing these set ups. There was an excellent segment prior to the broadcast before the COTA race that went in to detail how Aprilia's package works, and so far this season it seems they have the best corner speed.

Honda are still probably doing it internally. You only need to look at their 2006-2008 F1 effort to see how well that will go.

Beginning to think that what happened to them in WSBK is not precisely because of lack of interest

It is and it isn't, imo. HRC do seem lost in WSBK, but the series has used Pirellis forever. HRC know how to make a bike corner on Pirellis. They proved that a long time ago.

The lingering issue in WSBK, imo, is that Honda are like Porsche when it comes to superbike. Since MotoGP was created, HRC have wanted Superbike to be a customer series with a reasonable price point. This is why they have not built another V4 superbike. The original 1000cc rules were similar to the rules currently used in WSBK. Unfortunately for Honda, the tire performance, engine performance and electronic sophistication are still quite high, and it's nearly impossible to run a global superbike program without considerable factory involvement and budget.

How do you fix this problem if you're Honda? Throw money at a formula that doesn't work for you? Spend a small fortune on a V4 Superbike and hope it's good enough and simple enough to entice privateer purchases around the globe?

Neither MotoGP nor WSBK do what Honda want. How do you participate in something your company needs, but doesn't want? In MotoGP they are surely looking to 2027. In WSBK? There isn't enough money to reinvent the wheel.
