Yeah .....

He also says ,,, rather derogatorily ...... " some of these guys have been here 12 years!!"

makes you wonder how Gp would be if more of the "longer stayers had gone" especially say anyone who has never won a GP ..... are there other guys out there more suitable?

eg. Many US guys seem impressed with that Spies guy ..... should he be in there?

Edit: there are also guys in Autralia that may be better choices than those we currently have.

Crafar was ousted and was far better than many of the riders in there

McCoy same thing .....

must be many other riders that we never get to see in other countires too ...

No. I'd like to see him go mix it up with world class competition but I don't think he is at the level Hayden was when he left. No disrespect to the guy.

Great vid. Well one thing we have in common Barry is our love for MotoGP. (Even though your analysis is wrong half the time).

Yeah, what a great quote: "...they should just THROW them out!"

Well I must say, Curve mentioned it on another thread, it took a real MAN to ride back during that era. As I watched the video I couldn’t help but remember Tom's assessment saying: "Kevin Schwantz is overrated." (Yeah, I know). If you won anything during this era, it was with five other very capable guys with balls of steel breathing down your neck while the rest of your focus was trying to tame a wild beast whose sole purpose was to tear your limbs apart, if that didn’t get you, the track would. Poor Randy Mamola who was so great but will be remembered by the casual fan that he never won a championship but runner up to the legends of the sport. Have we ever had such a tight field since? The grid read like a who’s who of greatness in MotoGP during that era.

Agree and disagree. Certainly not as good as Hayden (when he left) but Spies is world class material. They both only have Mladin in common. As much as I dis the guy, Mladin proved to be the only competiton to Spies & Hayden.

I'd compare Spies to Toesland. Both good enough to win a PAIR of superbike championships, both young enough to make a run at MotoGP. Both with the same potential to make an impact. Neither of them dominated their series, but were consistent enough to earn a chance.

As of right now,the youngster showing the most promise is Josh Herrin. He has won in Supersport at the age of 17 and came within inches of winning the Daytona 200 in Formula Extreme. He has been in the AMA for 1 1/2 years because he was not allowed to race until he was 16.

Correction-he came within inches of winning Daytona in Supersport

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (BarryMachine @ Apr 3 2008, 08:55 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Are there others in the US?

Josh Herrin
He is the only 16 year old rider I have seen podium in a supersport race since Nicky did it.
Very fast and very aggressive.
Other than that I'd say no

great quote from little john. grumpy wee ....... that he was. he had an ocd thing about cleanliness too.

Spies will always be a risk just like Hayden was. When Nicky started there was a lot of people who questioned the decision to put him on a factory bike. The risk obviously paid off because whatever is abilities and credentials when he entered the series, he has developed into a grand prix rider and won the world title. Hopkins was brought into the series in a similar fasion, and hasn't cut it though, showing us that it can easily go both ways. My problem with Spies is that he has been riding in the same series at the same level for a wile, I would expect him to do more to move up once he has reached the top in AMA.

Excuse me...

Did you compare a national level champion to an international one? A rider who only has Mat Mladin, a rider who during WSB Laguna wildcards was in dire form and once DNS'd from 'exhaustion' (what type of .... is that?). A rider who is on the best bike by a country mile? Proven by the fact there was only 1 non-Suzuki win in 2007.

Yes, Toseland won his second title by a narrow margin, but he had riders such as Bayliss (a recent GP winner) and Biaggi (a legend in Grand Prix) to win his title against. I would put those two riders FAR above Mladin in talent.

Oh, I may be biased also.

The difference being that JT has proved himself by winning two WORLD Cahmpionships, Spies is far more comparible to Kiyonari. They are both double superbike champions of similar age and experience, both won their titles on the best equipment (Spies more significantly so). I'd look beyond the fact that Kiyo won his titles more convincingly, simply because i don't think the differece is that significant.

I agree with some of the other. Herrin looks promising.

I don't get why everyone gives Mladin no respect. He was on a .... bike in MotoGP and is a damn fast rider.

I've already gave my prediction that Mladin will smoke spies this year. He says he just wants to win races, but I don't think he will crash this year or give up pole points to Speis. He's just flat out better than Spies.

With that said, Spies is a decent rider, but he is no Hayden. He'll earn some respect in MotoGP and may even win himself a ride for 09 at Laguna because the man is FAST around that track.

AMA superbike is pathetic. The Suzuki's are so far ahead of anything else but the biggest difference is the tires. Spies and Mladin get tires nobody else does. Its a joke really.

How can you not look back fondly on the stories of Lil John keeping the paddock awake with his late night hoovering? Great quote, great guy!

Josh is going to be one hell of a rider. He is not even 18, and already a title contender. He is what John Hopkins wish he was.

John Hopkins doesn't wish he took the path Herrin was on, are you kidding? Hopkins got exactly what he wanted, a GP ride. Sure he bummed around for a couple seasons but in that time he developed a cult following (I'll admit, I was a part of it for a time). Once that happened he had the sponsors to support him and the protection of the ever-underachieving Suzuki as an excuse. Now he makes $5 million a season to ride the Kawasaki. As was said, he has the money to keep his teeth pearly, to keep those ears in check, buy the ice to draw attention to said ears, tan regularly and be an all around ...... bag.
