Curse of the No 1 plate

It will be the same story at Honda.

Yes the above for CS IF he wins the championship will test his side of the ledger - having invested in the marketing of number "27" as per VR with "46" it will be an interesting scenario for HRC and Team Stoner if and when the time comes.

Honda like their champions to display the # 1 on their bike. How much say the rider has in this would depend on relationship and contract with the team i would expect.

Poor Jorge........I'm not too sure many here actually feel sorry for him, however he did display masterful talent on the weekend after being boned by Sic.

Which leads to the 'Curse of the No 1 Plate'

The curse doubles when a macho prick makes a f...ing monogram out of the number

Personally i thought the JL #1 was pretty clever.

I'm curious to know why you don' think many will feel sorry for him? However, judging from the hangover of Rossi fans that still don't like him because he beat Rossi, I might understand your false assumption. I feel sorry for him, as you say above, he was on a good weekend until Stupid Sic took him out.

Reverse the curse: Do you think Valentino Rossi wouldn't have won 5 titles while carrying the number 1 plate?

The fact that there's been a few 1-year champions merely demonstrates the level of competition. At the start of this year (in theory) there were at least 3, and possibly 4 riders who had a legitimate shot at the title. Last year, there were 4 riders with a legitimate shot at the title. That number has been smaller in previous years.

That is until Super Stupid decided to take out three title contenders. Perhaps another nick name is in order: Simonchelli--the Title Contender Eliminator.

And yeah, agree, this idea of #1 plate curse is .........

+1, too bad it looks like it won't last for too long.

Btw i do like Jorge Lorenzo, he isn't a cool or good guy in anyway, he's pretty arrogant most of the time and he blames all the non-wins on the bike...but he's still a hell of a rider, 2nd best out there imo.

He was incredible in Assen, passing the field like they were on BMX bikes instead of MotoGp's. MAN was he driving pissed. (but everything was under control, not like in Silverstone)

Perhaps he should have gone to the other extreme and had his number fashioned on the back of his leathers out of rabbit fur...or maybe ridden around with a giant foam number 48 strapped to his back.

From a graphic design perspective it is an excellent and inspired concept and a very clever yet minimalist use of characters to illustrate an idea....if I had a designer present that to me I would be very happy!

Then people would just accuse him of copying the clown

Also applies to the argument about stoner not winning another world championship because there has been a gap of 3 years. Afaik no-one has left the team for whom they won a championship after not winning the championship for 3 years to go to a better team, particularly at such a young age, such moves usually occurring when a career is waning and to a lesser team. Like valentino and ago the great eddie lawson won for a second manufacturer when he transferred to honda the year following a championship for yamaha, but even he couldn't win a championship when he later went to cagiva; it was remarkable he won a race imo.

This doesn't mean that stoner will definitely win the championship either of course, jorge isn't going away anytime soon, and if they do make rapid progress with the ducati GP11.1 rossi signature edition valentino is only one stoner dnf away from being in contention.

Really - I haven't seen so much about "27"

Probably a moot point - since 2012 CS will have a big #1 on his Honda

Yup too me too. Fact is that a lot of racers are very superstitious tho.

Too true and it isn't just racers....many sportspeople have rituals or certain preparations that they always go through perceived as fundamental to their consistent high performance. Only difference is if they don't sink a putt from 20 meters they still get to walk back to the clubhouse afterwards with all their limbs intact.....I think it is a kind of placebo effect in that it reinforces a positive mindset rather than allowing a negative mentality to develop. 99% of sport is won through sheer force of will and mental strength. Rossi squatting next to his bike and then adjusting his g string on the outlap hasnt done him much good lately though

I dunno about that. He is still un-injured and in the land of the living !

Some marketing involved in the number 46, and an emotional attachment (?his father's number or something) but rossi is reputedly quite superstitious anyway.

I wonder what stoner will do if he wins again, which won't be by a large margin unless something happens to jorge; number 1 was arguably better for him in 2008 than number 27 in 2009 and 2010.

Just remember how superstitious Valentino really is when he had "ROSSI" on the back of his leathers in place of "The Doctor". After that mess at Jerez he changed his leathers right back to what they were. If anything I believe that it just came down to having that in the back of his mind just like it might be there with a number one plate on the bike. The psychology behind it is more than just some random bad luck.

I think his bloody stupid hair style hasn't done him much good lately including last year as well in Mugello, he needs to get rid of it that hair style asap.
