Cal Crutchlow???? WTF

Jumkie

Intriguing. Im sure he got upgrades here and there as the season wore on. Please elaborate.

Ha! I'm certainly not in the know and it was my first year watching, but I seem to recall after getting the nod for the vacant M1 he all of a sudden looked like more of a threat. Pole and a second at Indy and another podium later on I think. I started watching that season in order (Qatar on) starting in September and I also joined here around the same time, maybe I was looking for things. I remember wondering if he was all of a sudden being given electronics updates to get him more up to speed for the factory ride next season. It was just a hunch.

Thanks for explaining Jum, couldn't have explained better myself, ^^ that was preciously my point. I don't think lack of power was a problem for Crutchlow in this race, he had plenty of pace on other parts of the track to encounter that but his main problem was that he fail to overtake both Honda's on twisty parts of the track.

I think overtaking is not Crutchlow strongest points at the moment as we have seen few times last year when he had better pace than Dovi but he failed to overtake him but as he said himself after the race he needs to take leaf out of Rossi's book and needs to bit more aggressive in upcoming races.

One thing about bike "advantages" which I have always accepted is true, which babelfish I think was wont to argue back in 2007, is that straightline advantages are easier to employ than cornering advantages, and as has been said a honda which is slower on a clear track lap can use such an advantage to stymie a yamaha.

No one can deny rossi's skill at passing, and cal is going to have to learn to pass on corners/under braking etc himself if he wants to prosper on a yamaha as jumkie says, since this is where any yamaha advantage lies. Either that or get a factory honda ride, which might prove difficult.

BlueGreen, ur probably not far from the truth. It would make sense.

Mike, well put.

There are a few distinct parity groupings among the entries, Cal was the best of his grouping. If he can nip at the factories while keeping the rest behind, he should eventually be rewarded.

I like Crutchlow because he always looks like he is pushing, and also he is funny as heck!  The pre race on BBC where he was "feeding" Parrish was ridiculous! hahaha

From my perspective Cal can follow someone and we rarely saw him get past the riders in front of him like last year in the race when he should have been able to pass Dovi but just follow behind Dovi almost from the start of the race until the final lap as in qatar, I definitely think he should be able to Pedro passed easily, and what did he do? follow him and follow (use google translate)

Nailed it! Dovi has been on GP bikes since 2001, often times on a factory bike. Crutchlow has been on a GP bike since 2011... always on a satellite bike.

He has changed his riding style since last year - much smoother. Given a bit more power, he would have been hanging on to the podium chancers till the end. He over-rode his ride, he had no choice.

How about that Bradl? A full factory Honda and he managed... to bin it.

I could be wrong but Dovi has been racing the Gp calendar since 2001, always on Honda's through 125's and 250's all the way to his first Moto Gp season in 2008.  So he was always very loyal to Honda for his entire career.  Always on underpowered machines in his 125 and 250 years..

Last year, his only year with Tech 3 he finished 4th in the championship while Cal finished 7th...even on his first and only year on the M1 he beat Cal.

So Moto Gp only since 2008.  The only factory ride he had was with Honda prior to his Tech 3 stint.  He has only won one race (2009), but has many  podiums.  Cal on the other hand has been on since 2011 and has not done much...yea fast one lapper but can't pass so much.  Rossi smoked him under braking and cracked him. Rossi didn't pass him during the straightaway.

I like Cal and think he is an awesome rider, but people talking about how he needs a factory bike in order to do better...well I find thats a bit of a long shot.  What happened with Spies when he went factory? Cal needs to learn to be "consistent".

Cal has one of the best bikes and he will have his turn do be on the podium...I just hope he keeps his cool about factory vs non factory parts.  If he shows he deserves them, they will come.  And besides the factory vs satellite bikes are more similar this year than in the past...

This is highly contentious - but certainly as a 250 jockey  Dovi was every bit the rider that Jorge was - and in my opinion better on the brakes. It's accepted knowledge that the Team Scot RS250 languished in a developmental vacuum and that the bike was the beneficiary of a  miraculous makeover giving Aoyama substantially more ammunition for HRC's final shot at the title in '09. The reed valve Honda was never a match for the admittedly more finiky disc valve aprilia down the straights and Dovi quickly learnt to address this disparity by his prowess on the brakes.

Or to put it another way - a MotoGP ex-works veteran and former GP World Champion with 13 years experience in GPs beat an ex-World SuperSport champion racing his second season on a satellite GP bike.

What does this mean, Mr Motrix450?

By cracking i meant that Rossi cracked Cal under pressure. He knew Rossi had caught him and was on a mission. Sorry but English is my second language so I was maybe not very clear.

Dovi is a better rider than Cal. Period. Last year was a demonstration of that. Cal has crazy talent I think, but he needs consistency in order to take himself to the next step. He has the bike..

I say go Dovi and go Cal although I see Dovi's season pretty rough unfortunately. Here's hoping Ducati figures it all out sooner rather than later!

Maybe, or maybe it was just simply a mistake, after all, Rossi made one in the race too, and I wouldn't say he "cracked" under pressure.  Here is how Cal explained the incident (from a motogp.com post race video interview).  He said he got sucked up into the slipstream which caused him a bit of movement, this movement resulted in him slightly touching the rumble strips where he "locked up the brakes".  He conceded it was his mistake, one that cost him track time, but lucky for him no loss of positions.

Now, now, Jumkie.  :nono:

Don't deny the nice Rossibopper his opportunity to GLOAT and sadistically revel in his hero's opponent-crushing glory! :eek:rc:

Try to remember that Boppers have VERY delicate little egos; treat them accordingly.

Wow, so refreshing to read something original on here regarding Rossi fans. Keep up the stellar work!

I completely agree with OP, it is getting really old.  He is a crybaby.  I used to like him at one point until he started bitching.

I deserve the Ducati more than Dovi waaahh (even though Dovi was WAY more consistent last season)

I cant keep up with the factory guys waaaah (even though he has an identical spec engine)

I can't win races because I dont have a factory bike waaaahh (you dont have one because you're not consistent)

Im not going to win this weekend because those guys got 3 more days of practice waaah (life isnt fair bro)

STFU Cal, Rossi would be battling for a podium on your bike. Stop crying.

Man, you' got me here.  I am a massive Dovi fan and have been for years, just like my dear old mum.  In GP race meetings that I have attended, home and abroad, Dovi is the second most winningest rider, second only to the whinger that departed last season.  Lil Red, if you wondered why I picked #4 for your Simo pic, this is why.  OK they didn't really get on, but I was most impressed with his tattoo after Marco left us.

Here I get back to my old argument, Superbike riders who have turned to GPs never have had the greatest race results (Hayden,Edwards,Bayliss,Hopkins,Vermuelen,Toseland, now Spies and Cal).  Those I have mentioned that have won a race or three by enlarge got a fortunate break at the start of the race and were lucky enough to keep a gap.  The most successful riders started in the bottom tier of GPs and have worked their way up in increasingly longer races, thus IMO greater experience and race craft.

So the answer to your question, Dovi is a better racer than Cal.  I thought he deserved the Repsol seat and on the flipside was gutted for him when they gave him the flick.  Regularly on the podium even though he wasn't the first in line for new parts.  He finished within the top six in nearly every race last year on a satellite bike.  Until recently, satellite bikes were rarely on the podium, admittedly now because of dwindling numbers of manufacturers on the grid and factory bikes.

Tell that to to Roberts, Spencer, Rainey, and Lawson.

If only he were as talented and consistent as he is is rugged and funny. Colin Edwards had the likeability quotient - but it didn't translate into results.
