Pyefuck quits again and I have somehow burned some bridges that I was flying above anyway?

This is a good day.

Needed a scapegoat.

To be fair, Burgess had pretty much lost faith in him and was saying in the Australian press at least that his best days were behind him and he probably should retire. He might have been signiificantly correct in terms of the post-Burgess years not exactly adding to Rossi's overall standing in the sport, but he did imo underestimate how competitive Rossi could be as the 2015 season in particular demonstrated, and if Rossi did want to keep going, as he obviously did, he hardly could do so with a crew chief who no longer had confidence in him.

For anyone else to demand that this should be toned down to reflect their sensibilities, would be the height of arrogance. Anyone who who can't bear hearing criticism of Rossi has the option to hang out with like-minded types at Crashnet. This, is not that.
Sure. But I didn't say anything to the contrary.

Agreed. To be fair to JB, I would've made the same conclusion that he did in 2013 - that Rossi could no longer challenge Pedrosa, Lorenzo and Marc for the top positions. Then, in 2014, to my great surprise, he finished ahead of Jorge (who seemed a little less motivated than in other years. Maybe a hangover from the trauma of Assen and Sachsenring 2013).

That was the year MM won 10 on the bounce. Rossi actually said during the season that Lorenzo and Pedrosa had despaired, because MM was so dominant they saw their short and longterm title prospects, which was what had mainly motivated them hitherto, as fairly bleak while he was just happy to be competitive again. Even Povol and I warmed to him that year when he had that attitude which I believe was genuine, not that it persisted after that season imo if not yours.

Thanks to the various posters for the nice words. I've been flat out at work, and there wasn't a race since I last posted, so I hadn't really read the new posts.

There was a period where Keshav and a few other posters had gone too far with their constant anti-Rossi diatribe to the point where nothing else could be usefully discussed, and to the point where anyone who offered a reasonable counterpoint would be attacked childishly.

It looks like Keshav and a few others reflected on this and have toned this down. Keshav even posted a little less, and came back with recently with better posts. Credit where it's due: the clogging has reduced a lot.

A few posters, like pyeman, don't really contribute to the discussion about racing, and need to reconsider their approach.

The story with Synn was that he made intelligent contributions when he joined, but a few mad members jumped on him, annoyed that their Rossi-inspired "two minutes hate" was interrupted. Unlike other posters, Synn just gave a double serving back. However, I think many members will find that if you engage him in intelligent discussion, he's one of the most knowledgeable posters on the board. Give it a shot and see what happens...

That was the sense that I got and I think I said the same during that period - that Pedrosa and Lorenzo seemed a little demoralized, whereas Rossi seemed happy to have put the Ducati years behind him, and battling (though usually losing) up the front with Marc. Obviously, as he made the next step in competitiveness in 2015, his goals shifted and the devil of old popped up.

I note that you didn't highlight the latter half of the sentence (i.e. "to the point where nothing else could be usefully discussed"), and you seem not to appreciate the use of the term "diatribe".

Hmm... a matter of perspective. I wouldn't say folks have toned down anything at all. There's been huge shift towards congeniality here since JPL and Knockdown departed. And that's been much enhanced by way of forum members no longer having to maintain a constant siege mentality since most here have put Synn on ignore. Much easier to be convivial when we don't all have to contend with an unhinged rage-freak making unforgivable remarks about people's dead family members and goading members into flame wars with the use of jingoistic dog-whistle insults about religious affiliations - all of which were especially virulent when used as responses to anything not flattering to Rossi. He was making it impossible for anyone to have a cogent discussion about anything.

I haven't departed.

I disagree, but it doesn't serve the forum to go back and forth about this.

Here's a read. Much stated in the column has been ascertained here over and over.

MotoGP Opinion: ?Making The Case For Marc Marquez Being The GOAT (Greatest Of All Time)

The answer is not many.

It is pointless to say how amazing someone is until they dip their feet in unfamiliar waters. Rossi’s, Vinales’s, Lorenzo’s and even Iannone’s stock were pretty high until they tried equipment that didn’t work for them, even with spec this and spec that.

Marquez may do amazingly well on a Ducati or Yamaha. Or he may bomb. No one will know until/ if he tries it.

Dude must read Powerslide, some of us have been saying that very thing for ten years now . One thing he missed n that article was Doohan had the SNS as well and they were also cooked from data gathered by Burgess . I said not long ago that if you gave Marquez a fresh cooked tire to his preference he would win 15-16 races a year. It makes you kind of wonder how good Doohan, Rossi and Burgess really are knowing just what tires mean in this series. For two decades were heard about the magical adjustments Burgess and his riders made from Saturday to Sunday and it turns out those magical adjustments were made of rubber. Still all time greats, but it does kind of make you think what the numbers would have been if everyone was on the same tires. The title numbers would probably be very similar but you can bet there would have been win totals that looked diffetent

All the top riders got them, and SNS were only available for European rounds. If you want to get a sense of how they would've performed, look at the races outside Europe at the time. The same riders dominated.

I don't think Vinales and Iannone come into any discussion involving Rossi, Marquez and Lorenzo.

MM's status is already assured as is Rossi's obviously, and Lorenzo's for that matter at a lesser but still high level in the vicinity of top 10 all time.

This winning titles on multiple bikes thing is a latter day construct, some of the greats rode for multiple marques, some such as KRSR, Rainey and Doohan didn't.

I would be surprised if MM failed on any bike given how he has performed on every bike he has encountered so far; as you imply though the same applied to Rossi before he went to Ducati, but that was a truly diabolical bike, and I don't think it is likely a factory Ducati or Yamaha that bad will ever be on the grid again. Winning on another bike would add even more lustre to MM no doubt, and I suspect he will do it at some time, but if he wants to be a totally Honda man like Doohan I see no problem with that either. If it gives you something to hold on to after he eclipses Rossi's records (he may not beat him for total premier class wins IMO btw) good for you, certainly going to Yamaha and winning, particularly the first year, was extremely creditable, and in evaluating the careers of both riders when they are completed it will certainly be among Rossi’s most significant achievements, which doesn’t invalidate the arguments for giving MM credit for still dominating despite all the efforts to level the equipment in his time.
