Spies to wildcard at Valencia MotoGP?

Newly-signed American will ride for Yamaha at Valencia, says Ducati team boss

NEWLY SIGNED MotoGP rookie Ben Spies will make a wildcard appearance for Yamaha at the final round of this year's MotoGP Championship at Valencia, according to DUCATI team boss Livio Suppo.

Speaking on an Italian television show, Ducati’s team manager Livio Suppo let slip that Spies would be racing in the final round at Valenica, from November 6th to 8th.

How cool is that? Spies racing Rossi in the final showdown of the season. Wouldn't it be great if he could replicate Troy Bayliss' 2006 podium-topping performance?

Hope he dont bottle it or there will be plenty of gossip over winter.can he cut it .lol

My question is why are we getting this info from the Ducati guy?

Who knows if it's true but I'm very excited to see what happens. He knows the track. When he raced Laguna last year aboard a GSVR he took a sixth with little seat time on the GSV. If it happens, we're in for a treat.

I'm pretty sure Tec 3 won't have anything to test in Valencia, so this will serve as Ben's first test.

This is exactly what I wass thinking. So iss this just ........ then?

Valencia is a very technical circuit, while he did ride in in SBK, neither his results nor his judgment were stellar.

The most interesting thing will be whether or not he is able to finish in front of his fellow Texan. If he finishes behind Toseland, let the trash talking begin.

It's already been accepted, even expected that he crosses the finish line behind Toseland... given this would be his what, only 2nd attempt at MotoGP and first on the Yamaha's. What do I think? I believe he can even best the 2 regular riders, but then again that wouldn't prove to be much anyhow.

I'm pretty sure that this will be his 4th appearance. First time on the Yamaha though.

Edwards is going to be fighting as hard as he can to get that 5th away from Dovi in these last few races and it may come down to Valencia where Spies will be riding under team orders lol

Who expects him to finish behind Toseland? If this is generally accepted, as you claim, then why did Spies get the ride over JT? And finishing above Edwards wouldn't prove much? He's top privateer and has a shot at a top five finish in the standings. I know I ask you this every time I reply to you, but seriously, do you watch motorcycle racing?

The guys name is after a rider who sucks so what do you think? He predicted that spies would suck in sbk and off all riders guess who was going to run away with the series? Yep you guessed it ...... nocando!

SS56 - although Rock is a signature away from a sanitarium, on this occasion I thoroughly agree with him....... off you clueless ...., it's getting very boring now

Although supershinya is usually strangely passionate about 'certain riders' and his opinions are harshly anti other 'certain riders', his opinion in this thread is actually quite rational. Jsut give it a second read. All he is saying is that even if Spies finishes behind Toseland, its not a big deal since a direct comparison would be laughable, one being a two year motogp regular and the other making only his 4th start, and 1st on the yamaha m1.

Now for my opinion on the matter in general: In a perfect world there wold be close to 30 bikes. Riders like Toseland, de Angelis, Canepa would have 4-5 years to develop, like it used to be decades ago. Because seats are so limited and the competition at the front is so cutt-throat, the teams/manufacturers are forced into swapping riders in and out of the premier class every two or three years. That is not enough time to acclimate when setup and tracks are so complex. It is true that certain riders instantly rise above the others and their success is a forgone conclusion (Lorenzo). There have been, however, a handful of world champions and GP winners in the past that took time to hit their stride, but when they did they contributed a great deal to the sports integrity and entertainment value.

As it was mentioned in another thread a good long while ago, imagine if every rider was kicked out of GP's if they didn't win a title in 2 or 3 years, you could erase a large amount of deserving champions. I do agree the likes of Barros and Checa--perhaps even current riders Capirossi and Edwards--'have' stuck around far longer than necessary, but if teams want them so be it. I just wish the younger riders would get more of a chance to develop.

Good point. This tiny grid is really benefitting WSBK. The Flaminis are inheriting talent that would have been given several seasons to develop their skills and learn how to operate in GP. Those days have long since passed, and now a majority of the world class talent in GP are being prematurely retired to WSBK where they produce barn burner after barn burner.

How much longer until we get to see a diverse sport that is capable of sustaining itself and supporting 25+ riders?

I'm not crazy, I just think that no matter what Ben does ss56 is going to rag on him for some reason. The whole idea of spies riding this race is great since the testing is so limited right now. I am stoked to see the dude come in the series. I was hoping JT would take Canepa's spot at Ducati though since I think he is really good but for some reason he just didn't work out well with the M1 even though it is the best bike out there at present.

You may be right pinkone although I have him a little on the quicker side of JT.
