Spec Tyres for 08

I guarantee there aren't three people on this forum who ever ride out into the chicken strips and definitely, ain't no-one here is riding past the limits of the current top-of-the-line sticky street tires - not on the street they ain't. That's just a lot of jock-strap wishful thinking.

90% of staying shiny side up on your bike (especially in the wet) is about confidence...

and if you dont have confidence in your tyres, then it will be a lot more likely to end in tears....
and having a super sticky tyre is not the only thing that is being developed, its a super sticky tyre that lasts a long time and works well in a broad range of conditions...

and you dont need to be on the chicken strips to need good grip....braking also uses the central part of the tyre...

Confidence comes from good riding skills. When I first road-raced I was scared shitless of racing in the rain. In '87 I hooked up with a group of Irish club racers who grew up doing TT racing and they talked me through a lot of stuff, and eventually I trusted what they taught me and found enough confidence to race in the rain, but it was only the actual act of racing that really made me feel confident. Until I actually did it - it didn't matter how good my tires were. Until I actually took the risk, I'd always been incredibly overcautious in the rain. Even back then, I rarely out-rode the tires. The current sticky tires are so much more competent than the average (or above-average) street rider, it's not funny.

No longer on the fence. BRING ON THE CONTOL TIRE!

At least this way everybody gets equal rubber (assuming everybody gets the same stuff and not Peders or Rossi getting something 'special' from the backdoor of the warehouse).

Your kidding yourself id you think a 'control tyre' will result in even allocation.. If anything, the favored riders will revel and excel and the privateer/unfavored riders will be left to suffer more than ever..

At least with multiple brands competing there are a range of riders being allocated the certain brands best rubber..

You are probably right. But I would hope there would be a system in place that would “guarantee equal” distribution. But like you said, I may be dreaming. There is a reason for cynicism and frankly, that is the reality of the world.

As an Ant West fan, i know a hell alot about politics, being screwed over and cynicism.. All i know is that if you make it to the premier class then you make your own luck.. You can only do what u can with what your given and hope its enough for your team to keep you around...

Yes I agree, and I thought you might see it that way since you feel your boy had not been given the chance that his talent deserved. Yet, you only seem to have this view for Ant West but fail to see the similarity with Hayden. Perhaps only West was the one being "screwed". I see it for both, and have said so before, but you insist, as you say, "cry me a river" that this idea doesn't seem to extend to Hayden. Interesting.

I find it hard to compare instantly getting a ride in the dominant and prestigious factory HRC team in MotoGP to years of struggling aboard shoddy standard kitted 250cc bikes with shifty teams that dont even pay your wages..

Instantly? Perhaps you should read up on Hayden's career. He has won several championships (and some with Honda) before he was promoted to the MotoGP level. Where he improved every year until he won the title. Yeah, against guys who practically were reared on the tracks he was competing on. Ask yourself, was Pedrosa also “instantly” promoted to a Honda factory ride after winning a title for Honda?

West vs Hayden

Keep it going this interesting.................. but this the
"Spec Tyres for 08, WTF?" thread.

Yeah.

Ok, I'm for the Spec Tyres, this way Hayden and West will probably be on the same tires.

Well the flip side of both of these riders being "screwed over" is that Hayden got an shot at the world title with HRC (it gets no better than that) on the back of a nation superbike win, and West has a factory GP ride on the back of mediocre 250 performances. Both riders have a lot to be thankful for and i'm sure they both are grateful for their golden opertunities.

All this bitching about how street tires will suffer from lack of competition at the GP level has to stop. I guarantee there aren't three people on this forum who ever ride out into the chicken strips and definitely, ain't no-one here is riding past the limits of the current top-of-the-line sticky street tires - not on the street they ain't. It's naive to think that the technology developed on the race track only finds its way into performance tyres for when they are being ridden to their limits. The research into profiles, constructions and compounds can be applied to their entire range to move their product foreward.

I like you sometimes.

In fairness Nicky was a AMA champion and got the Honda ride. Ant West is only racing this season because Jaque had lost his motivation.

Next weekend is really going to tell us a lot about the state of affairs in motoGP. If a control tyre is introduced then I think certain riders have far too much influence on DORNA and it's not healthy for the sport. If the rules are slightly modified and they let teams bring in more tyres for each weekends racing, but no overnight specials then I think it's a sensible compromise.
Hopefully common sense will prevail. Remember, no one is bigger than the sport.
