Simoncelli's #58 to be retired

Not sure if this is posted anywhere else and while some may have already known I had no clue about it until this popped up. I think it's a nice thing to do and surprised it didn't happen sooner

This has always confused me because it is often not observed. Sheene's No.7 was supposedly officially retired with the exception of Chris Vermeulen who had his blessing. Yet ignoring Checa who already ran it, you still see it in use.
 
I think Sheenes number was only retired in Britain. Never heard of it being retired on a world scene. Googlearch tells me Britain.
 
It's only since race numbers became a "trademark" rather than a representation of your previous season's finishing position that this has become an issue.
Bring back yellow/green/black plates. :)

would anyone really want to use it? I'm not superstitious but I wouldn't be super keen on riding with 58.

Indeed. I agree with Stoner's assertion too that the champion rider should have to run the #1 plate.

would anyone really want to use it? I'm not superstitious but I wouldn't be super keen on riding with 58.

Laverty ran it in WSBK with success so I don't see the issue really. It's just a number at the end of the day.
