Sepang Test 1 Thread

Hailwood was nowhere near the tallent of Stoner. How can you even try to compare him? Its not just based on paper .... seeing Stoner ride shows he has something nobody else has.

Because he won 9 world championships in the 500cc, 350cc and 250cc classes, he won races on singles, twins, 4 cylinders, 6 cylinders, 2 strokes and 4 strokes. He won on Ducatis, Nortons, Hondas, MV Agustas, MZ's, Suzukis and god knows what else in his formative years, probably Triumphs, Benellis, BSA's and all that. He raced at a time when the mortality rate for riders was the equivalent of Battle of Britain fighter pilots while riding on some of the most dangerous tracks in existence.

:p

Against what quality field? Comparatively ..... bikewise. Hailwood could always garner backing.

Mortalty rate !!? Are you seriously suggesting that is an admirable measure of the quality of a rider!!?

Agostini, Redman, Read, Ivy, Tavieri to name a few.

As for the mortality rate, that's what they had to deal with back then, bike failures were way more common. These younguns don't know they're born.

It's kind of pointless to compare the two. Different sets of riding skills. One could also argue that Hailwood's ability to compete on public road courses puts him in a different category due to the inherent danger. The ability to instantly access risk and act accordingly is one of the most important tools in the box. Also Hailwood was competitive in the premier classes for a much longer time.

Since we're discussing ancient, Australian history....
On this day in 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip and British colonists hoist the Union Flag at Sydney Cove, New South Wales, now celebrated as Australia Day

Happy bunch of ..... day to all you Aussie peeps.

Speaking of old history I was thinking back to why I personally thought Hailwood was mediocre, and it came back to his performance in the late 70s here when he came out and ran mid pack. I think many from oversees came here to learn and many came thinking they would clean up ( even Ago got beaten at times ). I found this gem.

For a small nation we used to have a disproportionate amount of folk out there on weekends racing bikes.

That's not uncommon, I often think the same when somebody who's been racing on the world level drops "down" into BSB and ends up getting their bollocks handed to them by the regulars, Nori Haga for example, I think he got a single podium while his teammate challenged for the championship and apart from his first season John Hopkins has had a rough time here too. Hodgson when he went to AMA as well, I don't recall him winning a single race.

Let's kick it off.

Who will top the test?

Who will surprise? Who will underwhelm?

Casey Stoner has done only four laps...and has already done an incredible 2:01.1! His talent is otherworldly.

P1 to P5 all used a soft tyre for fast lap.
Glad to finally see moto gp back even though it's only testing.

Anyone else think they puig'ed in an upgrade for the Danbot? Half second clear of the field. If I were Marc I'd be looking for a new ride soon.

Early impressions.

The Ducatis look very strong. Miller is a surprise. JL seems to be riding well.

Rossi was the fastest on the hard tyre.

Pol on the KTM was fast.

The quote from Dall'Igna speaking about the GP18:

“In MotoGP è difficile sentire un beneficio così chiaramente, per questo sono stupito.”

"In MotoGP it's difficult to see such a clear improvement, and I'm shocked for this reason."

May be an opening as a Ducati test rider soon. Their guy is running 20th in the field
What Ducati test rider "running in 20th" are you talking about?

Sylvain Guintoli is 20th on a GSX-RR Suzuki.

If you live in a glass house don't throw rocks.

Dovi, Rossi and Marquez all inside 1:59.
2 pages of Stoner fellation over a 2:01 and not much discussion about the above.

I would love to see Stoner make a comeback just so that his overrated ... be put in its rightful place by the actual cream of the crop.
