Please bring a camera to record the historic event.  :)

I had a camera ready to record our historic meeting. You even promised me some of the booze with the worm in the bottle . Guess you didn't get out of jail in time ? lol

You are a member of Gaydar???

It's an in-built defence system. Seriously during the Olympics i said "he's gay"  everyone laughed at me (not unusual) and said "crap, look at all the girl fans". I just have the ability to spot it. Not in .....'s tho. chatted up many a bird only for her to tell me she's a rug muncher . and before you start, they were not just saying that to spurn my advances. That suggestion would just be crazy talk lol

He had what most race fans couldn't even dream of for a job and life style,

Most race fans couldn't stuff their fat arses into a set of race leathers (if they owned any). Even fewer could be arsed to go out club racing to see if they possess any talent. Even fewer could bother spending the cash to do a competitive season (yet they'll ..... about TV fees) never mind the time and commitment to do it. So you're completely correct, I guess, they really couldn't even dream of his job.
But they obviously have the right to demand to be permanently entertained by the riders, who must live up to their expectations, on and off the track.

You do make a good point, but please tell me motogp is pay per view where you are ?

Touche.
Fortunately, no.
Free to Air.
Sometimes live, usually delayed, but always gets bumped whenever the effin' F1 clashes with it.

Used to go halves on a Foxtel subscription with a mate (at his place), but got sick of freezing (drunken) walks home in the wee hours of Monday morning.

I think the main gripe with the new TV deal is how we have been sold out to a monopoly. Rip off Britain yet again. We get ...... over on everything here but its normally our government doping it. Then out the blue the sport we have followed for more years than we want to admit just passes us off in this way. The rest of your post i agree with . I still think stoner is a spoiled brat tho so bite me lol

The requirement seems to have been for Stoner to be like Rossi, which would be fake even if it was possible for him to be so which I am sure it wasn't , or if not to refrain from beating Rossi.

I can think of only one rider who was like Rossi as an all round entertainer, Barry Sheene, but can think of many  who were rather taciturn, including unquestionably great riders like Eddie Lawson and Mick Doohan. Doohan and Lawson had more gravitas and a greater record to fall back on than Stoner, but I don't think saw their role as being all round entertainers at all. Wayne Gardner who imo does not have achievements which match Stoner's is more arrogant than him (again imo), or has been anyway.

What I really don't get is the argument from some who hated Stoner that he had a duty to continue in the sport beause of all it had given him, whilst saying they didn't find him entertaining anyway; actual Stoner fans were almost invariably happy for him to retire if that was his choice.

That maybe true of some but far from universial. I was a fan of Kato, Melandri,Barros and Abe.Going back further i was a big Rainey fan and just ask jumkie what a teenage school girl i turned into when i met him. All far from the Rossi showman persona.

On your point about Gardner. Agree 100%

I was soooooo glad when Lorenzo decided to give up those faked   stage acts after he won a race. It wasnt him, and you could tell he was uncomfortable playing the clown. He now comes       across much more beleivable just being himself. Same with Stoner, no fluff, this is who i am, if you dont like it, .... off. He proved you dont have to be a fake douchbag to reach the top and make huge money. Honda was willing to pay him more than Yamaha, Ducati, or Honda ever payed Rossi. They were ok just winning races.

Sorry.

Not quite Jail.  (That would have been better!)

Was stuck working for a Peter Principle boss in an utterly psychotic company.  Our annual ISO quality audit was invariably scheduled for late July, the week after the race.  Neurotic Boss got even more neurotic than usual and refused to grant leave in the prior weeks.  I only wish I'd had the stones and perspective Curve displayed, and told the company to .... off.

But Rog, don't the vast majority of these guys behave with petulance and/or like spoilt brats when things do not go their way?

Rossi quitting Yamaha after the me or him ultimatum.

Pedrosa/Puig many carry on's about Hayden, Simoncelli etc

Lorenzo's carry on regarding other riders, equal euipment etc

These guys get where they are because of that spoilt brat petulance as they are so tightly wound up (as are the vast majority of extremely high performing athletes) but it is how they present that petulance that determines the manner in which they are perceived by the media and it is here where Rossi is the absolute king to Stoner's pauper.

IMO, all current and future riders need to look at how Rossi presents himself, irrespective of the situation and mould their 'personalities' whilst using Rossi as a template (and yes, there is a lot about Rossi that I do not like/enjoy, but he has manufactured a persona that affords him opportunity and luxury that many simple will never see)

"But it's OK because Rossi waves to me and blows me kisses."

You are obviously entirely entitled to dislike Stoner, and I can even see why he doesn't appeal to you personality-wise, and him carrying on the fight in a post retirement book probably reinforces your view, and doesn't really help him in any way even in my opinion.

As I said earlier in the thread though, he was actually correct and his critics wrong in regard to many things he was taken to task for. What examples would you give of him being petulant in 2007? He even actually acknowledged Rossi when he clinched the championship at Motegi that year. I recall him being peeved in one of the early season European races in which he finished off the podium that riders less in contention for the championship than him "blocked him"; that was silly, given that such behaviour by opponents is known as motor racing by most definitions including mine. Otherwise in Australian interviews he said all year that his success was beyond his wildlest dreams, and that he had hoped for 5th at the most. His "bad attitude" at least initially seemed to mainly involve him being of the belief that he had fairly won a world championship during which his bike hadn't "ridden itself".

This. Lorenzo looked like he was trying to be Rossi when he hit MotoGP (he even used the number 48, which would be like one of Michael Jordan's teammates wearing #24). I'm glad he's dumped the act. And he's definitely won himself a few fans this past season for the way he rode the rims off the M1.

I think in 2010/11 Lorenzo realized he was trying to emulate a guy who was 4th place in the hierachy, and thats not who he should be trying to beat.

Jorge's Derbi 125 carried the #48. As did his Aprilias.
Though he did emulate VR's leathers with the one red/one blue boot thingy...which was still not as bad as that horrid golden lid.

What a load of bollocks !

There are plenty of non Rossi fans that dislike Stoner. If it's how you say then why doesn't Lorenzo have this universal dislike projected towards him ?

People don't like Stoner because he is petulant and behaves like a spoiled brat. He had what most race fans couldn't even dream of for a job and life style, yet all he would do is moan and complain like the ungrateful prick he is. Then there were is Barrymachine brigade fan base that were as irritating on message boards as stoner was in interviews.

To quote a wise Scotsman, He's a greetin faced ....... !

Yes - that's true. There are plenty of (non Rossi fan) mean-spirited frat boy, belligerent-drunk, rude-boy wannabees, and anti-intellect types who were outraged that a polite, skinny beanpole of a farm boy consistently beat the pants off the playboy ....... they all wanted so badly to emulate. Seeing that freckle-faced county boy whip the fatuous clown's ... really made them feel emasculated and so even if they weren't Rossifans specifically - it outraged them. Nothing pisses off a neanderthal more that seeing their macho hero bested by some pencil neck kid using skills and smarts that the celebrity through whom they live vicariously, doesn't possess. They hated it when that nobody Aussie on the ...... Ducati exposed the truth that qualities like macho brawn and chest thumping schoolboy braggadocio don't trump sheer talent. Europeans didn't exactly fall in love right away with rough-edged, clod-hopper Kenny Roberts when he showed up and kicked the ... of all the European royalty. But at least they gave him slack because he fit mold of what macho wannabees consider to be "manly".

Very true, but I always thought that #48 was a little too close to #46 for comfort. When that's your number, you're trying to make a statement, much like LeBron James did when he wore the number 23 when he first got into the NBA. But JLo has gotten away from all that and carved his own identity. A pair of world titles doesn't hurt, either.

On a side note, I own a Lorenzo helmet. I was looking for a new lid and the store had these HJC helmets that fit my head perfectly. One helmet had Lorenzo's color scheme, the other Ben Spies. Wasn't a hard choice.

Lorenzo used 48 because it was his first manager's (Dani Amatriain) number when he was in GPs.

Lorenzo switched to 99 when he fired Amatriain. Not everything is all about Rossi.
