Rossi: "Stoner did an incredible job on the Ducati"

You are obviously entirely entitled to dislike Stoner, and I can even see why he doesn't appeal to you personality-wise, and him carrying on the fight in a post retirement book probably reinforces your view, and doesn't really help him in any way even in my opinion.

As I said earlier in the thread though, he was actually correct and his critics wrong in regard to many things he was taken to task for. What examples would you give of him being petulant in 2007? He even actually acknowledged Rossi when he clinched the championship at Motegi that year. I recall him being peeved in one of the early season European races in which he finished off the podium that riders less in contention for the championship than him "blocked him"; that was silly, given that such behaviour by opponents is known as motor racing by most definitions including mine. Otherwise in Australian interviews he said all year that his success was beyond his wildlest dreams, and that he had hoped for 5th at the most. His "bad attitude" at least initially seemed to mainly involve him being of the belief that he had fairly won a world championship during which his bike hadn't "ridden itself".

Good post mike and i would be hard pushed to find examples of petulance in 07. That season he just got on with it it took full advantage of all the others being caught with their pants down. 2008 on the other hand when things were not like 07 we saw another side of him imo. After his 07 championship he was like a different kid from 2006, although there were warning signs of his attitude back then. I'm talking about the people sneaking into his garage and sabotaging his bike ect.

To be fair, Stoner also hinted that Rossi was "sabotaged" in Valencia in 2006. I know that makes him sound like he wears a tinfoil helmet but but at least he's not claiming that all the supposed funny business in the paddock was aimed solely at him.

Yeah ,i remember something about stoner saying that. I don't ever recall Rossi implying any such sabotage being to blame. in fact i seem to re-call he blamed himself for choking under pressure.  Thing is, there is a big difference between sabotage and being unlucky in getting the duff out the batch. I went to the shop to by a dvd player. There was a big stack of them and i ended up with probably the only duff one on the shelf. Did the shop keeper sabotage it, or was i just unlucky lol.

What a coincidence, A couple of companies spend years and  tens of millions of dollars developing a bike and tire,   a rider spends countless laps adjusting his riding style to fit that combination, only to have it given to his main rival after beating him. I dont know about you, but that would have pissed me off  to no ends as well. From that day forward, he despised Rossi and Dorna, and everything they stood for. Cant say that i blame him

Lol, I also don't buy the sabotage theory, although it's possible Rossi just got duff tires on race day. Rossi claimed in a recent article that "something strange" happened between Saturday and Sunday that weekend, that the bike felt completely different on race day, but he also says he made a mistake and it was his fault he went down, so no tinfoil there.

God, I hate the offseason. I think I'm going to pick up a copy of MotoGP 13, simulate the season and post the results, just so we can argue about whether ditgal JLo or MM is better. Maybe I'll get the one that seems to come from an alternate universe-the cover has Rossi leading a race from de Puniet and Pedrosa.

We have argued this ad infinitum Roger, and since as far as I can tell over the internet you are a good bloke I don't want to further insult you, but him not displaying petulance in 2007 is rather my point; the subsequent attitude you find objectionable in Stoner occurred after he was spat on by English fans at a charity event for the sin of winning the 2007 world championship and was pilloried for being pissed off about narrowly avoiding (after a mistake by Valentino) what would have been a high speed collision, entirely due to his own efforts rather than any agency of Valentino's, among quite a few other things.

I thought he was booed rather than spat on but not being there i can't really comment on that.  One thing i will mention tho as a point of interest. I was at a GP at Donny in 2002 i think it was. Max Biaggi took loads of boo's and abusive chants from so called fans . Thing is ,i was stood right by these morons shouting the abuse at him and they were not British. They were Argie Porto fans. I wonder whether max assumed it was British fans just because it happened at the British GP.

I don't like Stoner but personally would never boo him. In fact as you know i past pleasantry's with him when we bumped into each other in a traffic jam. I enjoyed watching him ride and think he made many valid points about the ill's of gp.

As my mum used to say to me, "it's not what you say but how and when you say it".

You should see the abuse Niki Pedersen (speedway) gets in Poland. Anyone would think Stoner was the only rider to ever cop .... at a race meeting lol.

pardon my ignorance, but is speedway big in Poland?

Huh. And here I thought that turning left over and over again was a purely American obsession.

It may look that way but there is a hell of a lot more to it than that.

No argument with that-there's a lot more to to NASCAR than meets the eye as well-I just didn't know Speedway was that big in parts of Europe.

it was donnington 2008.

I was there and it was only a handful booing.

no spitting.

Booed during the charity event at Donington park in 2009, sworn at and spat at coming back to the pits on the back of a scooter after a practice crash a few days later according to his book. Says he has no problem with the  true British fans.

There is some precedent for even very well paid British entertainers objecting to being spat upon, paying customers though the perpetrators may be; Pink Floyd stopped touring after such an incident, and Roger Waters wrote a whole (rather turgid imo) album inspired by the incident.

Well it's inexcusable to spit on anyone at any time. I also have no time for the boo boys and some sports like PDC darts for example are plagued by this behaviour. From my experience at race meets its quite rare and normally just a small group of idiots doing it for attention. My point was stoner is by far the first racer to be subjected to this and in the grand scale compared to other sports what he received was minor in comparison. I gave an example of niki Pedesen in Poland. He had tens of thousands giving him ..... I've seen darts players have full cans of beer thrown at them. Then how about the black football players having thousands monkey chanting and throwing bananas at them. I'm not at all defending the morons who booed or spat at stoner, i'm just pointing out what he was subjected to doesn't even register on the radar for some sportsman. I've seen Biaggi take are far bit from the argie porto fans in 02 yet he doesn't whine about it forever more. It's a fact of life that when you are on the world stage you will have those who love you and those who hate you. You talk about Roger walters taking ...... I bet David Gilmour didn't. Why would that be ?  Because Gilmour aint a whining .... like Walkers. These people cop the .... from the morons because they know it will effect them.
