I think he is falling. Look at the front tire, it's not in line with the rest of the bike.

I definitely think he went down (point of no return) when the brake lever touched (Handle bar)… No way to save that one! No even Edwards style!

You are right. Front tucking in like that is typical for a front slide.
My expericence is that saving depend on a lot of things first of all it must be fairly "slow", but the point of no return is when the wheels are of loaded by hard parts scrubbing.

Well there you go even Rog. says it!! I told you WSBK guys have to learn to "tuck" it more to match the GP guys!! ......... maybe just not the front end
<
<
<
<

That bikes on his leg (Hence why no peg bolt sparks ), he has just gone down, the back wheel is even off the ground . Its Corser isn't it though? ..... he probably just picked it back up next breath, spat and exclaimed as his boot was burning "F#@% me swingin! that was close!!" , then kept going
<

Edit: I forgot ... he went down because he was on the mobile arranging a Barra fishing trip cos his leg was going to be hurting in a few seconds time and he'd heard that if you get a doctors certificate you can do it mid season

Yes inertia keeps them upright, but gravity takes them down. Inertia allows them to get so low, but not what I was trying to say.

I think I got your point Mdub... Excuse me to say, but more clearly from Rog:

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (chopperman @ Oct 22 2009, 10:44 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>yeah i understand, you would be beyond the point of return. besides i think you would run out of tyre well before that
<

Anyway, I was just trying to get another factor in, trying to put'em all together; lean angle, speed, tyres (pavement because if there is a tiny itsy bitsy of gravel just before that point = down!), inertia, etc… 'Gravety!' of course.

But riding style? I think it may differ, and some riders get to those points in a way and other in other ways!

That rider was 'Down' and no way on earth was in control!

okay, I got you now. And yes Rog summed it up like I couldn't, just saying "the point of no return" was what I was after. Thanks Rog. So we have grip, gravity, inertia which is cause by speed, no? And we have lean angle. Gravel, oil, rain, wind, all that .... is just an X factor. So if you tried to put this into an equation and amount of lean angle was the sum. do we have all the factors? I guess we would also need weight maybe.

FYI its rainy and cold so I am really bored.

If I remember correctly he rode for Ducati when he won his first title back in '96. I could be mistaken, though.

Not to do a "Tom" on you - but remember this is shot with a very long lens
which compresses the hell out of the image making things look closer together
than they really are. This is not theory. I used to make my living as a photographer.
Perhaps VHMPO1 will be good enough to direct us to the source page
which might indicate the circumstances of the photo.

I have to concur with you all that it sure looks like it's a great photo of a rider
just before the really bad part of the crash. But if it isn't. Wow!

Its pretty obvious bro. Ruben Xaus is crashing. The pic is the moment the front tucked.

i wouldn't argue to strongly about the break lever due to this photography fact but looking at the angle /direction of the front wheel i would say he tucked the front. Thats not to say he didnt save it with his knee, i guess we will never know unless as you have asked the poster points us to the source where the race/date may be available and shed more light on the subject.

Actually - truth to tell... I hadn't realized
it was Xaus. You've un-done my denial. That being said... he's crashing.
