The Universe has conspired against Nicky Hayden.

Lorenzo, big mistake!

Rossi, another title.

Stoner, another win.

Bring on WSBK.

A weird coincidence just mentioned on local TV

The total race time for Stoner this year, was the same as 2008 40m56.6seconds (2009 - 40m56.651s, 2008 40m56.643s - .008 difference)

Man, how often does that occur?

Ask V. He knows stuff like that.

Did you go to the race? And more importantly, do you have any pics you can't post?

Nah mate, sat in my loungeroom 800 or so kays north of the joint - will post pics/links that I have found elsewhere however
<

EDIT: Pics - not mine however but found posted in other forums - these start with Friday practice - http://www.flickr.com/photos/rreeve/sets/72157622599976618/

EDIT2: Another interesting point during coverage. Commentators were discussing the circuit and that power is not everything at PI, they then mentioned that the qualifying time achieved by the pole sitter for the Australian Superbikes support race would have placedt hem 14th on the MGP grid.

Waiting for Hayden fanatics to come in here with a nickname for Lorenzo (a la Takacrashi, whatever DeAngelis was given).....

He must have "Crash into me!" written on his leathers somewhere, poor dude.

Today Nicky did a good job! Stoner has not had such a helpful backup rider move for many a year

To be honest I don't think Lorenzo should even have been on the start gird today, he was reported to have food poisoning. As much as some dumb ..... on here love to play macho man and say he should ride it through, the repercussions can be deadly. Luckily nobody was hurt. Lorenzo should not have been on the grid.

Fora Sure I ama veri happy!!!

Here you go Gaz and Jumks, Stoner's race times:

2009 Ducati Marlboro Team = 40'56.651
2008 Ducati Marlboro Team = 40'56.643
2007 Ducati Marlboro Team = 41'12.244
2006 Honda LCR = 44'26.944

Ah well, here goes but it has been a while so be gentle.

For me, the race was an amazing performance by Rossi and Stoner who really, put on nothing short of a total exhibition of bike control that totally decimated the field while cutting laptimes at around 1 second per lap than third placed Pedrosa - awesome. The slides put on through turn 3 and into Honda hairpin by Stoner all race long were sensational, then Rossi started to play as well and the spectacle of slides was there for all to see, TC or no TC (take your personal preference there).

While some may feel that VR played safe, it didn't quite look it for me as the competitive instincts took over and he tried everything possible to get on equal terms as CS as he knew that Lorenzo was out and therefore could play with a bit less 'pressure', and play he did.

While it may have seemed boring to som, for me the battle was sensational as it ebbed and flowed around faster laptimes and what seemed like CS trying a little new ploy and slowing to low 1.31 laps for a while before setting off again - was fun.

Certainly seemed like VR enjoyed himself and was obvious that CS had, but for Pedrosa really, what a smashing despite being the best of the rest as to finish 20seconds back must surely hurt and demoralise even following the Saturday crash. Still, a good safe ride but no doubt a disappointing one from his perspective as he no doubt wanted more.

From there on down the order there were some good rides (DeAngelis/Edwards) and some damn good battles as well but also some disappointment with Toseland's ride through (latter commentary said he was 'going to talk' with race control) and the usual late season lack of form from Suzuki.

As for the talking points.

Well the JL and NH incident for one will cause much discussion and for me, it looks like an error caused by wind turbulence, ambition, pressure and corner one compression - but an incident both were lucky to get away from at that turn.

For Hayden, someone needs to investigate to see how many mirrors he has broken or black cats he has run over or even ladders he has walked under, as this year he has had no real luck of which to speak so is well overdue.

There is some other stuff but will wait a bit.

Ah well, discuss away

Soz, V.

What I meant was how often do we have consecutive years where the race times are near identical (not just for PI) as 2008 vs 2009 at PI is interesting given the switch to single tyre supplier and controlled compounds - to me it is actually impressively interesting

Man, watching Stoner drift that Duke through turn 3 and also over Lukey heights lap after lap was just awesome.

Great to see Stoner and Rossi going crazy fast and then backing off. Stoner was tempting Rossi to come past but he didn't. I think Stoner was trying to play some games but Rossi just loved it. I honestly believe Rossi loves racing Stoner in these types of races more than he does Lorenzo. Certainly haven't seen him so happy after coming second in a long while.

Well I'm a Hayden fanatic, and though it was a mistake by Lorenzo, I really can't blame the guy too much for trying because he 'had' a championship to fight for. It looks like he just lost it for a moment and ran into Hayden in a moment of haste. Everybody knows races/championships cannot be won on turn one, but that doesn't seem to stop people from trying. It sucks, and you have no idea how pissed I got. The thing that passes through my mind is all the moments we don't see of them stressing and struggles on a click here and there in practice set-ups, the hours of wrenching, the time spent examining the telemetry, the recovering from practice crashes, all the determination and hard work the travel, etc., then moments after the start all that hard work is over because of somebody else. I feel like Nicky's career after 06 has been a disaster of bad luck.

Perhaps V can tell us how many times Nicky's been crashed into and compare it to other riders taken out in the last 4 years. I would be willing to bet Nicky tops the list. Really, I blame universal balance.

I just hope Lorenzo acknowledges fault, apologizes, and we can move on. Its the folks that, like Kallio who blamed Melandri when he hit him from behind that get on my nerves. I will wait to see what Lorenzo says.

EDIT:

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>"I'm a little bit sad for this crash, not for the championship but for my mistake; I didn't expect this kind of mistake from myself,” said Lorenzo. “It was totally my fault, I miscalculated the distance off the line and Nicky braked earlier than I was expecting and I hit him.

“I thought I could save it but my front brake was broken and so when I tried to brake for the corner I couldn't and the rear made a big slide. I have a bit of damage to my nose and my finger but it could have been a lot worse.

“This is what happens in racing and, although I am disappointed about the race, the most important thing is that I am not badly injured.

“I want to say sorry to Nicky because I ruined his race today."

This is how a man behaves. Take note other riders. This is why Lorenzo deserves the fans that have jumped ship lately.
<
I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but even though he took out Nicky (and believe me, had you heard me when it happened, you would have thought somebody had stolen my bike, I was ....... furious) but Lorenzo's comments go a long way in making me a fan.

(take note peders, takacrashi, krashio, defagules.)

Interesting comment by Bayliss today on Aust. TV, during a tour of Stoners garage, he said WSbikes are an easy ride compared to the 800's. He referred to the 800's as beasts, and that they were a different league to WSbikes.

Your eyes fooled you. That didn't happen. Casey uses the most TC. You obviously didn't get the memo.

Not much to discuss really. Lorenzo blew the start, got passed by both Ducatis, then tried to make it up in great haste and torpedoed Hayden. end of. (That is until you get your inevitable Puig type member in here saying it was Hayden's fault: Supershit, Pinky, etc.)

It would have been nice to see Rossi get back on the top step at Phillip Island, but what great rides from Stoner and Rossi.

You have taken it exactly as I meant, many will see something in it that was not there and as you post of JL's comments indicate - man, what a class act he has shown himself to be.

Now, an aside.

Do you reckon Hayden needs to approach Target for sponsorship as he seems to already be carrying their logo on his leathers.

Shattered Vermeulen couldn't crack the top 10, top ride from him anyway in his last MotoGP race at home.
