Phillip Island GP 2011: RACE

Congratulations to Casey Stoner! No doubt that in 2011 he is the best rider on the planet.

MichaelM, that is the worst post I have ever read from you. Some bloody fan you are. Conversation here is so bad these days I am glad I decided to ban myself.

It is great that stoner has proved everyone wrong this year, although he did that far before today. It does not make the formula any better just because he is winning. I am sure he could still do it in a formula with bikes that cost 20% as much, and that ordinary mortals could consistently finish races on, and the sport might then be viable long-term. The number of starters let alone finishers in this race was ridiculous, however exceptional stoner may be .

I think all of these bikes are unrideable, the ducati just being the most extreme example. I am still a stoner fanboy, I think he dwells in a place when conditions suit his set-up and tyre preferences that the others cannot reach on these bikes, as ben spies has basically said. I take no pleasure in the likes of lorenzo and spies crashing trying to compete with him though, I think they should be able to explore the limits of their bikes with some warning as to when those limits are about to be reached.

I don't endorse the apparent previous business plan of relying on valentino rossi winning and being charming forever either.

You don't think maybe the weather had something to do with attrition today/this weekend? Kinda like Silverstone weekend/

No offence, but dude.

We just had a championship decided and the first comment you make is a complaint about the state of the sport. Whatever your opinion is about that, you sounded like a bit of a grumpy old man there. I sometimes wonder if some of you get any enjoyment at all from this sport any more.

Against my better judgement I will respond but I am done with these back and forth conversations.

Firstly, I would say "stop watching the sport" the same goes for the rest of the bloody whingers. Go to a local club race and give them some support god knows they could use it and leave MotoGP for people who understand it.

Secondly, what an absolute load of ....... crap that the bikes are unrideable. Go jump in an F1 car and lets see how you go. Go line up on the start line of a WC triathlon race or any World class sporting event and have a go. You and the rest of us will fail 100% of the time. These sports/vehicles are made for the elite not you and I. They are the pinnacle, the hardest there is and the toughest competitors only are allowed to line up.

Do I give a .... if riders that don't deserve to be there because they are not the best get beat? No way.

Phillip Island is as tough as it gets. Its fast and it requires balls. Exactly as it should be and if they can't take it then piss off and give the seat to someone who is prepared to take it on.

Do yourself a favour Michael and stop watching it or even better stop spending 2-3 hours a day posting on forums about it and you might just enjoy it and life a bit more.

Sure, but lorenzo and spies not even starting which was unrelated to the rain took a lot of my pleasure away. I just think these bikes are too treacherous as well as too expensive.

I was on my way out and posted quickly, and I guess assumed my attitude to stoner was well known and went without saying; as mental anarchist says I have spent far too much time on here , but much of it was spent correctly arguing in stoner's favour when things weren't going as well and few others were doing so. As a fan of the sport as well as of stoner I was disappointed that jorge, a worthy champion last year, didn't get to defend his title to the end on the track, and found the race difficult to watch particularly with the rain given my excessive emotional investment in stoner winning the championship, knowing that only misfortune could stop him winning the race, and that only serious injury could stop him winning the championship, since 5 points from each of the last 2 races was now sufficient even if he dnfed. I would have led a campaign against Phillip Island had he crashed in the last few laps.

I may take MA's advice and stop posting; excessive triumphalism by some among stoner fans (definitely not including you) is now irritating me as much as the over the top rossi fans did previously.

All credit to stoner of course if anyone thinks I need to say it. I am almost as big a rugby fan as I am a motogp fan, but decided at the start of this year that I would take casey winning the championship over Australia winning the world cup in rugby any day, perhaps fortunately given how events transpired today.

Still don't think the formula is good and didn't in 2007 either.

We all knew Stoner would win the title when we saw him on the Honda at Valencia last year.

He enjoys the same advantage over his rivals that Valentino had in his very best years.Difficult to name anybody who could seriously challenge him at the moment.

Bad luck for Lorenzo, but he's a tough chap and will bounce back.

Rossi at least tried.

Congrats to Casey. Twas good to see him get all emotional. Even the head of HRC looked like he was going to burst out into song.

I'm with Michael... and will be happy to see the back of the 800 era. Not holding much hope for Ducati in 2012. But praying like crazy (to no-one in particular) that Yamaha comes back next year with something more on par with Honday.

Felt really weird not seeing either Ben or Jorge on the grid. Like a "hole in the force".

Already looking forward to seeing Dovi on the Yamaha, hoping they get decent support next year.

Just think - it weren't for Rossi earlier in the year, Stoner would have bagged the championship at Motegi.

Will Rossi and Lorenzo become known as the "The Finger Twins" next year?

Mental, bro, overreaction man. Its actually too bad you’ve taken a hiatus, we need more sane posters and we miss your takes. But it seems lots of people have left the site or don't post as much. I think peeps who leave place way too much emotion into what is exchanged here. I don’t quite understand it, it seems easy enough to sift through the BS. On the other hand, I wish I had more strength to just stay away from the forum.

Ok, so now today we must all say positive things about Casey & the sport.

Anyway, a few thoughts (oh, and to others, feel free to skip over my posts, the scroll function is easy to use, the ignore button is more effective, and taking a page out of the peeps who say we should stop watching the sport, u can stop watching my posts, it is after all: an Internet forum): moving on.

Sorry to the Crutchlow fans, but he looked out of his depth. Needs to jump start bike at grid, causes bad start, battles with Duc back markers (consider they are Ducs) and ends up crashing. I'll chalk it up to rookie season, but next year he's got Dovi, so something will drastically need to improve. I dont think its lack of talent but rather lack of GP bikes not suiting his style. He'd probably be a contender in Wsbk machines.

Congratulations to stoner a worthy champ but lets call a spade a spade as someone said no one would have bet against him before a wheel was turned in anger.

I have to agree with some the sport is ...... at the moment and by saying that its bull that anyone would think your not a fan of th(esport, most would agree there is something wrong when the main event is the support class ffs

Anyway we'll have to see what happens next year!

Hopefully the insights Crutchey gains during his brief turn in MGP will make him more competitive when he returns to WSBK in 2013, unless he follows in the footsteps of other Brits that have gone down that path.

Yamaha comes back next year with something more on par with Honday.

Disagree with this part buddy. Honda and Yamaha ARE on par. Stoner is just that much better than everybody. No Stoner, Lorenzo wins race (barring a crash) and lifts the title. There are only two competitive factories, and it has been for several decades. If you're not on a factory Honda or Yamaha, you're not going to win, period.

It's just a gut feeling but I just don't believe the two bikes are dead equal. The Hondas have been pretty well dominant this year.

In 2007 when the Ducati was the best Ducati it has ever been, there was parity between Stoner and Rossi. This year I have not felt that to be true as regards Stoner and Lorenzo (who bested Rossi). Lorenzo has said numerous times this year that to be as close to the front as often as he's done, has been more about his willingness to ride to the ragged edge than pure ability. You know as well as anyone that I've been a Stoner fan since day one, and not so much an admirer of Lorenzo, but even I don't believe the gap in talent between these two is as wide as the results we've witnessed this season - would imply. I'm sure our favorite hillbilly would have been consistently up there on or near the podium if he'd been riding a Honda identical to Casey's.

Casey has been awesome. The Honda has been awesome. Fan of Mr Stoner or hater of Mr Stoner, the dude is easily the most deserving winner this year. He is just amazing to watch. Well done on winning the title.

Bring on the 1000cc ! More noise, more torque and hopefully more racing lines !

Just got a "congratulatory phone call" from Cali Kid - so yes he's still out there fighting the good fight.
