This week they are using the hardest tires Bridgestone offers so I wonder if this set up will continue to bring Nick results in the future.

I also hope this result doesn't strain the good relationship with Stoner. Stoner is rumored to be nearing an extension with Ducati. If Hayden is able to string together a few results, it may alter negotiations with Ducati.

It seems an absurd suggestion, but Stoner has gotten mad over less and he is known to harbor a grudge.

Regardless of what the future holds, great work by the Marlboro squad so far this weekend.

I highly doubt it , even though Nicky has shown improvement in this practice session he poses no threat to stoner in any way. He's not going to win the championship or become Ducatis #1 son, after that win in Italy Stoner is solid for ducati. If anything i think he is happy for him, unless Adriana has been giving Nicky come F#$K me eyes I think theyll remain cool!!!!!

On another Note if Nicky continues this improvement and by some miracle pulls off the Win at Laguna i will probably have a heart attack or burst into tears like those freaks at the michael jackson concerts

no ill probably just be really happy and really drunk

Good luck to him maybe it will work maybe it won't
Are you getting soft?

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>....but eitherway he is contracted to try...

True, but so was Melandri. I don't remember you having such negative things to say about him. (oh, wait, he's not American)

Anyway, this is a major improvement, but its just FP1. I'm afraid to get my hopes up.

great job from hayden and his crew

i wonder what pinky would have had to say about this, in fact who gives a .... woohooo go nicky.

I think anything is worth trying at this stage and i admire him and his team for taking such a bold move. good luck.

No way is this going to make a difference in Stoner's contract situation. How is that even possible with Nicky getting a top 6 in practice? It would take a series of wins and constant podiums to make anyone blink at Ducati to make a change here. I am very STOKED to see Hayden do well and I really hope this is what we will start to see more of cause the guy is fast and good at what he does. HE just needs to feel confident and comfrotable. SO now we can get a glimpse of what the kid can do with a bit of feel good from the bike. If he does continue like this I think we will see him at the factory next year as well.

I wonder how much this has to do with tires? Bstone said they were going to use the "dual compound" (right?). Something that Nicky has alluded a few times this season (that is the lack of suitable tires). Where is Babelfish our resident tire expert when you need him?

It's certainly been beneficial, dual compounds can only help the issue Hayden was having with getting heat into the rears. But from today's Jules Ryder column over at 'Soup, it sounds like they're very hard on one side (not uncommon but it's not as if Hayden is making the breakthrough on a super soft compound), which could potentially mean this set up could work at other circuits where a harder compound is not entirely necessary.

Is it sad that I'm in a very upbeat mood solely because of Hayden sitting sixth in FP1?

+1

(borderline pathetic, eh) Woe is us.

I thought it was the strong coffee

Still I am holding back (trying to control) getting too excited. The leaders are still ~2 seconds off Stoners fastest lap last year in Q. I think the times are going to drop significantly by a couple seconds tomorrow. If Hayden doesn't drop his then he will be right where he always is.

Sorry to be such a Kermudgeon. GO HAYDEN

Negative one point for being a Kermudgeon regarding Hayden's FP1 success. One point for using the word Kermudgeon. Neutral post. Hats off, Sack.

Sorry, I meant to comment on the rest of your post.

The fact that they are so far behind last year's pace is worrying, however Kallio and Canepa have resumed normal service at the back and Gibs is in his usual 11th-13th yet Hayden improved. Another reason for my (perhaps using rose colored glasses) optimism.

I was reading in MCN this week about JT trying a similarly radical change in set up/riding position, again with the emphasis being on front end feel, obviously emulating Colin's riding style. Not content with merely stealing his crew chief....
<
Anyway, it doesn't seem to have had quite the auspicious effect that it has for the Kentucky kid. From what I am reading the changes made to the Desmosedici have been far more extensive

I can only think of two people on this forum, (in addition to several banned aliases) that would not be delighted for Nicky right now. As someone said earlier, it was wonderful to see the old smile back at the close of session. If you understand the sport, then you know that like Marco Nicky is very fast, and has been impeded by those intangible factors which afflict the second Ducati. I always believed his perseverance and feverish work ethic would reward him, it has been dreadful to see him so dispondent, and I desperately hope that this is no anomaly. I just pray that he can raise the bar again tomorrow when it counts.

I think you nailed it with the earlier post. The front end setting for the Bridgestones is radically different. If he somehow has a setting that now loads up the front that is great. His slides at the end of the session were very nice. Everyone is in agreement that Nicky should be within a second of Stoner. Then, the tens get very hard to come by.

Im trying to look at this as a positive but the truth of the matter is, he is still over second off the lead.
No one would be happier than me to see Nicky get a top 5, maybe even more than Nicky himself.

Im still trying to figure out what Julian Ryder saw last year when after the first test for Nicky on the Ducati,he says ' You can breath Hayden fans, he can ride it! He was a second and a half down then and up until this weekend, was still a second and a half down.

good on nicky..how will casey cope with some pressure coming from his teamate for once..
