Schumacher WILL make F1 return in Spain
Seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher is set to return to the sport for the European Grand Prix in Valencia after Ferrari confirmed that the German driver is its choice to replace the injured Felipe Massa.

Schumacher, the most successful driver in the history of the sport, quit F1 at the end of the 2006 season but will now come out of retirement to make a comeback as Massa continues to recover from the injuries he sustained in his accident at the Hungaoring.

In a short statement, Ferrari revealed that Schumacher will shortly begin a specific training programme, which will be followed by confirmation that he will partner Kimi Raikkonen in the Spanish race.

The news comes just a day after Schumacher's manager Willi Weber said he was '200 per cent sure' that the most successful F1 driver of all time wouldn't be on the grid in Spain.

However, Schumacher said he 'couldn't ignore the unfortunate situation' that Ferrari now finds itself in following Massa's accident and has agreed to make a return after meeting with Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo and team boss Stefano Domenicali.

"The most important thing first: thank God, all news concerning Felipe are positive,” Schumacher said. “I wish him all the best again.

“I was meeting this afternoon with Stefano Domenicali and Luca di Montezemolo and together we decided that I will prepare myself to take the place of Felipe. Though it is true that the chapter Formula 1 has been closed for me since long and completely, it is also true that for loyalty reasons to the team I cannot ignore that unfortunate situation.

“As the competitor I am, I very much look forward to facing this challenge."

Not sure about which to vote, so I haven't yet.

I think he'll be rusty, he won't be allowed to do any practising before the next race.
How ever I think the sponsors will be happy and may even shell out some more cash, so perhaps they can improve that car somewhat!
<

I might even watch the race just to see how he does do.

I don't think he'll have lost too much of his ability, so i think he'll be right there. He and Kimi will be the most interesting thing because the overall results are so influenced by the car that him winning or losing doesn't necessarily reflect how good he is alone. I don't know how long Massa will be out, but i'm buying tickets to Monza

^^^The estimates are that Massa will be out until next season, if he can return at all. Schumi is the greatest of all time, but has technology passed him by. I will be rooting for him but I do not like his chances.

To quote what I found from another forum:

"Funny, it takes a retired old man to make F1 exciting. "

I don't think I'd be watching the next race if I wasn't so curious to see how Schumacher will do.

well see if the "old man" will be able to surprise yall!

i think he can do quite good! hes got 6 kg extraweight now, but what about nikki lauda???
champ in 75, 77 AND THEN 84...what a comeback even after his firecrash!

schumacher still knows how to develop a car....there are no real champions in F1 these days (my opinion)...the only drivers are hamilton and perhaps alonso....

I think Prost won his final title after coming back from retirement too.

I'm sure he's not forgotten how to drive an F1 car, and I'll definitely be cheering him on. I'm not so sure he'll win first time out, but I can definitely see him getting near the podium.

The biggest question is whether the Ferrari car is cabable of winning. It's been on podium 3 times, but with no more updates coming (apparently) is it possible to bring that car to the finish in first position, even if Schumacher was still in his prime?

I reckon he will do alright. might be a bit slow to start. He's only filling in until massa's better , isnt he ?

^^^ Massa suffered a severe concussion. At best he may return next season, thw worse case is that he may never race again. I think Michael coming back will spark some serious interest, but I cannot help but think that he may be damaging his legacy with an uncompetitive car.

I don't like Michael Schumacher much, but I'm rooting for him to kick Kimi's .... Don't like Kimi at all, I remember the ....... pushing down a toddler and walking away and shoving a photographer to the ground because he accidently stepped on his gear. I have no doubt Schumacher will hand him his ....

AFAIK, he's long since killed off any 'legacy' with his unethical behavior. Yea, I'm kinda curious to see if this will 'wake up' Kimi, but overall I'd much rather the ....... stayed retired. It's really too bad that EffWun is so ...... up that Schumi's return is seen as some sort of Gift from God.

I'm sure anyone can appreciate the significance of the sports greatest ever competitor making a comeback. You don't even need to watch F1 to understand how exciting that is for the sport.

Michael can be on the podium if Ferrari can provide him with a competitive Car. I would like to see him beating Kimmi once again. There isn't any Montoya to push Michael.

^^^What are you referring to specifically when you mention unethical behavior? I am not being a smart ..., I really do not know.
