I can agree with the fact that I too hold motorcycle racers in higher regard than any other athlete due to the risks involved. That being said and this is coming from a knowledgable fan) there are so many reasons why fans react a certain way. Some of those reasons we will never fully understand unless you live in the region and understand their culture.

You don't understand their specific love for the sport, the level of passion for a rider, the cultural escape, ect. ect.

As long as a fan never has physical contact with a rider or never endangers the riders on the track I am fine with whatever else happens.

Passion, love, hate, its what makes our sport great. I race in two series in California and I have a massive passion in participating and watching this sport.
I love seeing Rossi, Iannone, A. Espagro, and Redding do well. I definitely boo at the tv and dislike seeing anyone else doing well. That does not mean I have less respect for them. Just the way I like to interact with the sport I love.

One last point. As much as a lot of the people on here love to hate Rossi. The current competition between Rossi, Lorenzo, and Marquez is unlike anything we have ever seen really. It has propelled this sport to the popularity it commands today. Sit back and enjoy the show. Let fans behave the way they want. If they pay to get in and want to boo a certain rider.... so be it.

Yes I like Rossi and yes I am Italian.
As I said, in the days of the gladiators the Roman emperors doubtless would have argued that they were putting on a popular spectacle and giving the people what they wanted as well.

You I am afraid are just running the standard line, which pretty much is that it is different because it is Rossi and a majority of people love Rossi. There is strong disagreement with that narrative from several posters on here, and you have in no way made a case for it.

You needed to read further. They were a subsidiary of a larger group called Bridgepoint Capital, who are venture capitalists, who also acquired much more valuable football media rights at the same time as Dorna took over GP bike racing, the sale of which was I think forced by EU regulators who would not allow the previous rights holders to hold the rights to both F1 and GP bike racing. I have not kept up, but I believe they are still at least partly owned by Bridgepoint, although a Canadian pension fund is now also involved, whether by directly owning part of Dorna or through owning part of Bridgepoint Capital I don't recall.

Then they bought Dorna as part of a deal, Dorna was formed and bought the rights to GP before being taken over by bridgepoint.

High Side, did Marquez and Lorenzo get booed when on the podium last year at: Qatar, Argentina, USA, Jerez, Le Mans?

I'll assume your answer is NO. So...what changed?

Did the culture in these countries change in 15 months? Were the "fans" not passionate? Was the competition not as intense? Why aren't other riders getting booed, surely there has got to be fans who don't like other rider?

Did Marquez and Lorenzo get booed at Phillip Island last year?

So...what changed? When did MotoGP change to a footballing atmosphere? And even that is a false analogy, because in football every team gets supporters for and against. Has Rossi been getting overwhelmingly booed?

Your entire rationalization comes apart when you realize MotoGP changed only after Sepang because of ROSSI! And the sole reason was because chickenshit Rossi made false accusations and physically attacked Marquez. Then followed it up by saying Lorenzo was part of the conspiracy to cheat him out of a title. THIS IS THE REASON THEY ARE BOOED! MotoGP has not become a footballing culture, because the disrespect is acutely ONE SIDED!

This literally happens in every sport... Not that big of a deal. This kind of stuff is child's play compared to soccer, football in some states. This happens a lot in racing... just look at Nascar. Those guys beat the crap out of each other every season. Their crews get into it as well. Keeping it safe on the track is all I care about.

Its better to have passionate fans that love their riders and pay to go to the races.

If you want boring fans go watch an Indy Car race.... that sport died years ago because of the lack of passion.

You see it that way, I see it as total ......... The behaviour seen in the last 6 months is nothing like has been seen before in Motorcycle racing, and that is the exact point. These people booing are not fans of the sport, they simply have so much invested emotionally in Valentino Rossi that they only want to see him win so they can vicariously say "I won!".

Your example of Nascar is weak too. For it is drivers and crews getting into fisticuffs, most likely for the entertainment. You don't see fans jumping the fence and joining in to punch the drivers. Look at the videos I posted earlier in this thread, they show both Rossi fans and one of his crew trying to physically get to Marc Marquez with intent to do who knows what? That is totally unacceptable.

You like Rossi and you are Italian. What's your view on the cheering of fallen riders and celebrating crashes? I assume that because you profess to 'love this sport' then you wouldn't condone it or regard it as appropriate interaction?

Funny, to those saying it happens in every sport ................... I cannot recall any booing at a golf major?

Then they bought Dorna as part of a deal, Dorna was formed and bought the rights to GP before being taken over by bridgepoint.

So they were owned by a different merchant bank before Bridgepoint. How does that change anything?

Agree, same applies to rugby or cricket.

One of the most appealing things about watching bike racing in the flesh is the friendliness and banter that can be had at the side of the track. Genuine Bikers are (or were) all the same there to watch people go for it on the track in a sporting, and fair way.

This is different, what one man who thinks he owns the bike world has done to MotoGP. He has poisened the culture

Booing happens in Cricket (ask any pom or kiwi when they play the Aussies), and in a lot of sports but I am not so sure that it occurs for the same reasons as it would seem to be within MotoGP.

There are lots of sports where booing does not occur and where it would be frowned on (swimming, netball, skiing etc) and I suggest that it will be in the extreme minority at any olympic event (as an example)

Sadly, MotoGP has gone the way of the hooligan mindset and no matter how much we wish that it were not so, it is now well entrenched and so will not stop.

While yes it would be awesome if VR came out and made public statements, to much time has past and VR is an extremely proud individual so were he to do anything to stop the stupidity now, will only harm him further due to the delays. He has now somewhat been painted to a corner - damned if he does, more damned if he does not

I had the same thought, he probably couldn't do anything about it now if he wanted to, which hardly reduces his responsibility, and the whole thing merely reinforces the view held by you, me and several others that he, an individual rider, has warped the whole sport.

Every sport has its unique culture. Booing is not normally part of motorcycle racing. What you're doing and millions like you are suddenly rationalizing this as acceptable behavior of MotoGP, it's not. You can rationalize all you want to fool yourself into accepting the negative affects of Rossi’s chickenshit accusations and subsequent meltdown, but it still won't change the fact this wasn't part of this sport. It has become part of it, yes, but that is thanks to fans like you who take their lead from cowards like Rossi. What is fascinating is that most of you Yellow fans choose to identify with Rossi because of the inflated records, as I'm told there is psychological research to back up this phenomenon of identifying with the "success". When you dawn the 46 cap you feel like you're successful too. Guess what, the yellow hat also reflects his character on you too. That's the fascinating part.

Rossi again?????? wtf???? what's wrong with you??

I don't agree with booing of any motorsports competitors. MotoGP bikes don't have safety cells though, and drivers are seldom thrown off or out of cars.

If you like Roman circuses that is your taste, but bike racing is a sport where traditionally the riders have been more respected, and booing on the podium and cheering of riders crashing out is not at all to my taste, and generally indicative imo of a lack of knowledge of the sport and certainly of its traditions.

motorsport is dangerous, nothing to do with booing. pls understand my sentence. motorsport alway dangerous and risky sport. whether you got safety cells or not still can harm your life. look at Bianchi. Look at Alonso at Aussie this year. he still badly injured. how about Nascar, Indy Car or any open wheel. All dangerous. and why you want to relate booing thing with this?? arrghhh!!

yes my english is sucks!

Agree it's too late now for VR.

Ok, at the morning of test match no booing, by tea when most people have had 9 pints of tetleys yes

Depends.

Stuart Broad gets boo'd walking into the ground (mind you, I reckon he feeds off it) and Richard Hadlee was boo'd at his damn hotel (again, he then ripped us apart)

In both cases though the booing is or was designed more as a sledge of how good those guys were in that NZ without Hadlee were nowhere near as strong as their bowling stocks were ordinary, Broad though loved the atmosphere

Big difference to the race track

all this over booing!?
FFS Chris Froome was spat on and had bottles of piss thrown over him in the tour de france last year.
Booing hahaha.
Regards crashes, Yeah I might do a fist pump or even dance a little jig if Marquez goes down cos I hate him with a passion. However this is only allowed after I see the little fcuker is okay and on his feet again. If he was hurt I dare say my thoughts would change to concern. Even though I really don't like him.

You hit the nail on the head. Is cricket it's banter, in MotoGP it's idiots and hate

You're being the English version of Daniboy. Did you bother to read this ....?

First of all he MOCKED the idea of having a bodyguard, the disgraceful news that it's come to this .....

"I need a bodyguard - jokes the Doctor..."

Second, his answer to asking if he had a message, totally avoiding the specifically ...... up situation of having to provide protection for two fellow competitors (which he started) illustrated what a chickenshit bitch both the "journalists" and Rossi are.

What would you like to say to them?

“That you need to respect all the riders, and athletes in general”. VR

Never thought that anything Rossi says can ever even remotely satisfy YOU... Jumkie, the redoutable Rossi Prosecutor, so passionate in his eloquence asking the Jury to send the criminal to the gallows.
YAWN... :lazy2:

No problem with your English, it is your argument ie that it is OK to boo because it is in support of Rossi with which I disagree. This has never been part of the sport of GP bike racing, and trivialises what the riders are doing, all because of one rider with an ignorant and fanatical following who couldn't handle being beaten despite all his previous success.

My fourteen year old daughter had filthy comments thrown at her, from two twenty something year old cowardly Rossi fans in Tenerife last summer. This was before the Sepang incident.
This was simply because she wore a 99 cap, that's how badly things are getting with the behaviour of some fans.
