The qualifying tire has not worked well with the Yamaha all year, it was extremeely hot at Laguna Seca yesterday and Rossi doesn't particularly care for the track. Put those conditions together and it's a poor qualifying effort from The Doctor. Today's forecast calls for more of the same, oppressive heat.

i felt abit sorry for vermulen after havin such a good start to the race, i personally think it has been the hardest race of the season so far with tyre seletion and race pace and basically just problems !

supposedly it was not Yamaha's fault. I read that it was a tire failure that lead Rossi to slow down which lead to the bike overheating...
I just wonder if this is true...

I'm not so sure, something doesn't sound quite right. A tire failure or blistering? Because I have heard both reports and if it is in fact blistering, then less/none of the blame falls at the feet of Michelin. I doubt we'll ever know what truely happened but that's a rough one for Yamaha.

VALENTINO ROSSI (DNF)
“We’ve been in a really difficult situation all weekend, with a lot of problems and unfortunately things got even worse today! We made a big improvement this morning in warm-up and I was much faster, so I thought that maybe we could do a good job in the race and to start with we made good progress from our grid position. But then we had a problem with the rear tyre and I lost all grip and was forced to slow right down in order not to crash. Then we had a problem with the water-cooling system for the engine, it overheated and when I saw the smoke, I knew it was over. Anyway, now we’re 51 points down on Hayden with only six races left, so for the first time I will race for the rest of the season without thinking about the pressure of the championship. My plan is to have a lot of fun over the remaining races and try to win as many as possible, and then who knows what might happen?”

This season is starting to become more predictable. Rossi rises to the top, bad luck pull him down, he rises to the top again, bad luck pulls him down again. Unfortunately for the doc, consistency wins championships. I seriously doubt he can be champion this year, if he is I think he`ll need at least 2 DNFs from Hayden, probably the same from Pedrosa, and he needs to win and win and win.
Pedrosa on the other hand, well he`s still behind Nicky, but 2nd on his first outing to Laguna.... maybe this is rubbing salt in the wound but that`s another thing Rossi couldn`t do, even with 4 years of experience on a 990. Man, this kid is gonna shine.
He might even take the title this year. He`s moving back to familiar territory now, a chance for some more wins. But then again, Hayden just got his Laguna Seca fix, so he might get hotter as well.

I think that after Laguna Seca Rossi's championship charge is now in doubt, especially after Hayden got the win and Rossi had his third race without scoring any points.
It doesn't matter how good you are when your bike breaks down, and that M1 has been a bit rubbish this year.

I was mighty impressed with Loris, coming from 13th on the grid to finish 8th ain't to be sniffed at.
I feel sorry for Rossi, Vermeulen & Stoner but I'm afraid that's the harsh reality of racing.

Crashy was Crashy really, Rossi unlucky, Edwards I expected more from him, but you can only do your best with what you have. The Dukes finished fairly well despite where they were at qualifying.

Superb ride from Hayden, Pedrosa and Melandri. I'm happy that Dani had proved to anyone who thought that he might 'break his neck' at Laguna wrong. For a rookie to come second at Laguna for the first time.....man, what can i say about him.....just simply outstanding.

Valentino Rossi isn't the best at qualifying, but HE COULD get a pole if he really wanted to, he's a character in himself and he knows he can still win the race from back in P11 or so on most tracks.

i think we should also take into account the concern of every racer about the conditions of the track!
...obviously even more so affected by the sweltering heat
i dont understand why those flipping contractors couldnt come up with something a bit more safer than that, taking into account the sort of speeds the dudes are doing.
this is why i think that all qualifying was effected for nearly all...i mean, you had vermulen on pole and colin edwards 2nd....both who have not been at all siginifigant so far in the championship...
and as for rossi....i dont think we should be worried about him at the moment....i think the worry should be with JB and all his crew....
trying to explain to a man as passionate as rossi why the hell his tyre was ripped with three laps to go, and then why his back end was clouded in smoke would be alot more dificult i could imagine
i still have hope for him...he CAN DO IT!

The track was safe, it coming apart was something unforseeable, extreme temperatures didn't help the situation either. Vermeulen and Edwards qualified well because they go well at Laguna. Question Burgess? He is the most brilliant man in the paddock.

never said otherwise bout burgess....but he is the man that will have to explain to rossi what went wrong with his bike....i wouldnt like to be the one doing that job...but yes i do agree with you....he is a master
i happen to love laguna seca...the corckscrew is genius and very heart racing...however, i dont think im the only one who thinks that resurfacing a whole track a day AFTER the race has been, is very useful...

Congrats to Nick, DAM good run from Dani, and Marco, sad for Chris V..
i'm still in shock and disbelief for Rossi... if the championship is lost (and it looks that way), it's not cause of Vale, the Yamaha and Mich's gave it back to Honda...
