Laguna Seca GP Cut For 2014?

Its being reported on several sites that the Moto GP in Laguna Seca may be cut from the 2014 calendar now that Indy has been confirmed for next year and possibly beyond. With the rumored addition of a round in Brazil and the addition of a race in Argentina, there may not be room for a third US, especially since Moto 2 and Moto 3 don't run Laguna due to the contract that Scramp is obligated to with the AMA to run their races on the GP weekend. Say it ain't so. I love Laguna Seca and the ride up there and have many fond memories of the track going back to 1981. I sure hope a Spanish round is cancelled before they take Laguna away.

~~~ UPDATE ~~~
Laguna Seca General Manager Gill Campbell denied to venerable US publication Cycle News that there was any question of Laguna Seca being dropped for 2014. "We have a contract through 2014 and we’ll be negotiating our future contract within the next year. It doesn’t affect us at all – we’re not going anywhere," she told Cycle News.
As popular as Laguna Seca is with both the riders and the fan base I cannot see them being cancelled.
is still on the contracted events list according to wiki, so they would need to breach or buy out the contract with the circuit.....did notice that Brno and Sepang are missing from next years line up tho.... anyone know anything about them? Not so bothered about Malaysia but would be a big shame to lose Brno
not sure thats what Dorna will be thinking.... also Dani won last year in the rain but before that the last Honda win was 03 IIRC
Take away Honda tracks so we get a better championship?
Ok, so arguably that'll be...Austin, Sachsenring, Laguna, Indy, Siverstone, Aragon, Sepang, Motegi, Valencia...and there's a fairly good case to made for the fact that like 'the Ring' Le Mans and Brno are no longer the domain of Yamaha. That leaves a Seven Race Championship.
Seven circuits I'd like to see reinstated...Istanbul Park, Spa, Paul Ricard - (but Jeez imagine the Honda's down the Mistral), Suzuka, Kyalami, Nurburgring, contentiously Monza and curiously I  quite liked Sentul (the brief tenure that it had).
Circuits I'd like to see dropped...Le Mans, Indy and Misano (never the same since it stopped going left).
Always wanted the championship to come to Brands.
If the facilities at laguna are as dire as it is reported then perhaps it is time for MotoGP to move on or Laguna to modernize....
I'd say good on them....just a shame they are keeping Indy....
I have not been up to laguna in several seasons, but even back then it seemed in dire need of some work.  Its not a top tier track, but it is very popular with spectators.
Three rounds in the USA is too many, but it would be .... to drop Laguna and keep Indy.
And on races to revive, a wet race at Suzuka with some Jap wildcards. That is what we need.
bring back suzuka and drop any other track at will for it.
Isn't Suzuka considered unsafe? Daijairo Kato died there, but I don't think the track being unsafe was the reason he died, unless he hit a massive bump that caused his crash. Suzuka would be a great track to be put back on the calender. As well as Nurburgring. Both Nurburgrings. But mostly the GP circuit.
Indy had some spectacular racing this season. I heard that they might resurface the entire infield before next year. I hope they keep it because of the history behind it, and because it's within driving distance (Barely)
Does anybody know why they run the track in the reverse of the F1 layout? Couldn't they just use the new MotoGP section of the track and run it the same direction as F1 did? I don't see how it would be any more unsafe going the opposite way. I was under the impression the only unsafe thing about running GP bikes on the F1 track was going on the banking, where they could have a spectacular crash and slide straight into the barrier or high side over the fence.
well that last corner that uses the banking would be a bit much, wouldn't it be? ;) it's a shame the layout is so crappy, from everything i've heard that event deserves a kick ... track.
GP course nürburgring would of course be cool , but germany already got the sachsenring which in my book is  one of the top3 tracks in motogp. but if there was to be a second german round i'd much rather have it on the ring than one of the boring tracks like oschersleben,lausitz or new hockenheim (which is just awful for motorcycles IMO). i'd like to see a moto2 race at the norisring though :lol:
suzuka...must be possible to bring back. it's definately the best road course in the world and every serious rider/driver would give his left nut to drive there, if laguna could be made possible why not suzuka?
guardrail too near to the last chicane and the fast right leading up to spoon are essentially whats wrong with the track. but i reckon it must be possible to air fence the .... out of that corner.
spa is off the cards as long as they don't want to ruin eau rouge.
If Suzuka is not there because of safety (which I believe is the case), Laguna should be doubly banned. F1 still runs there so perhaps money could be found to move some of the guardrails back.
Yes it is..Sloth is right, there were a few eyebrows raised when it was dropped and Laguna reinstated in spite of the alterations made. Suzuka was made a scapegoat following the post Kato witchhunt. Daijoiro's accident was a freak caused by a loss of control - nothing to do with the track surface - and there are many circuits where it could have occured.
Exactly right. There had been a sucession of accidents prior to the Kato accident. I remember both both Barros and Melandri sustaining very nasty injuries there. Spoon was notorious - Kiyo crashed there in this years 8 hour - and there are sections in of the track where the armco is still terrifyingly close - although I can cite many similar hazards on a great many tracks that we currently visit. 'Motorsport is dangerous' remember?
Nonetheless - it's a true racers circuit. Some of my most memorable GP moments and races come from Suzuka including what Rainey treasures as his greatest race ever. There was always an abundance of over enthusiatic Japanese Wild Cards linied up in every class and ready to go Banzai for out entertainment.
But most significantly...two words -
