Thats not 100% correct, our resident doctor,{ who has to be the most diplomatic person ive ever seen], agrees, as everyone else does, that nutrition is a major part of mental health, yet he does not back your theory that Ben Spies has a neurological disorder that is causing him to under perform in the first few laps of a race
I don't think there is much doubt that several of the naturally bigger riders, spies, hayden and latterly rossi are underweight; they have certainly reduced their weight compared to earlier in their careers when being significantly heavier did not seem to impede them from winning world championships etc, and so I think it is also reasonable to blame it on the necessities, perceived or otherwise, of the current (stupid) formula. I strongly doubt they are going to disclose their real weights either since it seems to be a sensitive topic. The fact that many endurance athletes have low body weight because it aids them professionally doesn't mean they are not underweight as well; they not infrequently have physiological disturbances like amenorrhoea and being prone to osteoporosis in female distance runners, and I believe there is data which suggests immune suppression, not that I am well informed about the latter.
It is fairly basic biochemistry and physiology that supplying energy to the brain is an extreme priority in human metabolism. Whether ben spies has starved himself to the point of relying on ketone bodies for brain metabolism during racing is another question; I would tend to doubt it but I guess it is not impossible. Keshav's nutritionist wife and mdubstylie would likely be better informed than most doctors, and me in particular.
I do think it is possible that his early race problems are due to the current (stupid) bridgestone tyres, so I guess whether he improves on next year's supposedly better tyres if he stays at his current weight may be instructive.
Note: Michael does not vehemently disagree either. He is at the very least open-minded about the possibility.
Open-mindedness.... try it sometime Pov.
BTW - do you know what amenorrhoea is Pov? You should start dieting right away. If you were to experience
this syndrome, you might well be less grumpy.
