Japan Grand Prix at Twin Rings of Motegi

Thing is, Dovi needed to be with one factory long enough to gel with the bike and also, needed to be rider #1. Self-confidence is of course prime, but knowing the team totally have your back, has to be damned inspirational. He's got the team and the tools that allow him to really shine. This I suspect is going to be a nail biter.

When Dovi pulled the pin to take the lead with 6 laps to go I was out of my chair yelling noooooooo! Why in his right mind would he want 6 laps of trying to fend off Marquez of all people? Then Dovi pulled that 1 second lead awesome lap I breathed a sigh of relief, ok he's got this. It didn't last long, the next few laps for me were pure hell as Marquez ominously ruthlessly moved in for the kill closing down the gap then retaking the lead.

Only after the race when Dovi explained his race did I understand the masterclass he and for that matter Marquez put on. Dovi had no rear tire left, he knew it was all over if he stayed behind Marquez waiting for the last lap it was race over. So he bluffed, he went early and used what was left of his tire to put pressure on Marquez. In turn Marquez then has to use more of his tire trying to catch back up always thinking in the back of his mind Dovi has it in hand and can up the pace again at will. Anyone who plays poker should get this, Dovi had a pair, Marquez not much better but they are trying to bluff each other into thinking they hold aces. Fantastic race and tactics loved it.

Great race , Dovi is in with a real chance of taking this championship . Imo Sepang is likely to suit the Ducati more than the Honda .
Definitely not the cakewalk for MM that some have mentioned.
Despite the fantastic duel at the end people still end up talking about Rossi even though he crashed out.....
Sad.

:fishing1:

It was actually Moto Vudu who first raised Rossi in the post race comments.

Sensational race, easily race of the year to date, but we still have three more so it's uncertain as to what will come out of those. Phillip Island is probably going to be epic. Hats off to Dovi for finally taking the risks that I felt he was not willing to take years ago, that will make the difference in the end when you tally up the points. I think regardless of the outcome, Marc is learning something here about what it takes to manage under enormous pressure.

I'm actually going to tip Dovi to win the title because I feel at this point the pressure is all on Marc rather than Dovi. Another wet race at Sepang in two weeks will surely favor the Ducati. Question is more generally speaking, if we get another titanic battle between these two, can Dovi hold off Marc at the final corner for a third time?

Either way this is the best title battle we've had since Nicky/Rossi in 2006. 2015 doesn't even come close to this, and it's nice that it is between two genuinely likeable guys.

Hats off to both of them for the performance they put on at Motegi. I couldn't help but think during the race that on some level the whole thing was insane from the point of view that they are out there risking their very lives for our enjoyment, and I do admit I was starting to feel rather uncomfortable with the entire thing because of the stakes involved. Yes, I know this is what they do for a living and I am sure they wouldn't have it any other way. But I just hope for our sake both walk away from this season unscathed regardless of who wins the title. I love wet weather racing, but there were far too many crashes in the race, and Marc had that massive moment on the last lap. Kind of reminds me that this is all entertainment at the end of the day and I don't want to see any of them getting hurt over this stuff.

Edit: One thing I do think that is coming is the Ducati fairing is probably going to get banned. I don't see HRC letting that fairing make it to Losail 2018. It does provide a major advantage in the wet and is covering up chassis deficiencies with the Ducati. I am on the fence about these aero fairings. I like the ingenuity involved with them, but I despise the Formula Aero aspect of them. Double-edged sword.

I am similarly torn over the aero fairing. As something of a long term Ducatista I am always happy for them to succeed and like both factory riders, and they have been repeatedly screwed for being innovative in the past. However it was aero that killed F1 imo.

Agreed. I think the issue remains that aero appendages was the surest and fastest road to ruination in F1, and should be avoided at all costs in GP. Regardless of the fairings being available to the satellite teams, I do not think it is a look overall for the product period, and I suspect Dorna is going to put an end to it. While it would no doubt hurt Ducati, I think the long-term health of the sport is more important, and I don't see how these aero fairings is of benefit to it. Yes there is a short-term boost for a factory like Ducati who has struggled to build a chassis comparable to either the M1 or the RCV. But I would rather see them figure out how to build a chassis personally.

Not a mention, even after he crashed there was silence. Until the alpha bopper had to mention his name. Sad. And irrelevent it seems.

This particular scene played in my mind when Rossi crashed out during the race, and it's how I felt when he came back at Aragon.

There was no reason to rush that comeback, and he is doing himself a huge disservice. Would have been better off resting and making a comeback at Valencia at 100%.

I don't know what is fundamentally holding back their chassis development (be interested in your views on that) but wouldn't you say though, that Ducati's aero package has delivered a better comp this year, hence good for the sport?

And do you reckon that the advantage to be had is as great as F1?

Chopper view of the last lap or thereabouts - https://streamable.com/ye9aj

I had thought Marc's last lap to beat Petrucci was amazing, but Dovi obliterated that performance. Watch how much distance Dovi makes up on the brakes in the rain! This is 'thee' greatest last lap rain performance I've ever seen. Marc had edged out a gap, Dovi catches him on the brakes and sets himself up perfectly to drive out and pass him on the straight, but how he got it stopped after slingshotting passed just doesn't compute in my mind. I've watched it a few times now, I get the same feeling watching it over and over. What a thrill, what a sport, what a performance by man and machine. It's simply wonderful.

Have to be honest and say that as I watched it I honestly thought that he had to lowside and take both out into the 90 degree as I just could not see how he could stop it on that surface, but not just stop it he placed it straight online which stuffed up Marquez's drive (all fair) and even though Marquez made the obligatory last corner lunge, Dovi won it by stopping that bike and placing it where he had to. Brilliant and kudos to Ducati as well as it showed how far they have come.

Above all though, credit where due to both riders involved who showed ability, respect and above all else, trust in each other to race in those conditions as hard as they did when both have a championship on the line. No settling for point but balls out riding in some of the trickiest conditions seen for many years ........... full credit both.

That one moment may well prove to be the defining moment of the championship
