James Ellison to return to MotoGP

Faarrrrkkk !! thats dangerous!
<

Nice guy, great rider when he gets a bit of confidence. He was able to hold on to Hopkins and Hill on his private Honda at the season finale at Brands. I'm interested to see how he fares against the other CRT riders.

Already a great thing about the CRT's, both teams and riders like Ellison get another chance.Great to hear.

That Aprilia motor was somehow built with CRT in mind, i think these machines will provide amazing mid pack racing, good motor reduced weight and as moto2 has shown, a good chassis and suspension can make a hell of a difference. The Aprilia standard. APRC package is a pretty complete electronics unit as it.

It takes motorcycle engineering back from the computer programmers and hands it back to the arcane arts of frame and suspension knowledge.

A good CRT rider may be able to take out a wet race.

ahhhhhhh!

ahhhhhhh!

Thats great but realistically who watches mid pack racing.

Fans? Not really( maybe they would if they could)

TV Cameras? No

Rear mid pack racers? Yes

Ducati riders? yes

This CRT is a ....... joke. Ive read a 100 different articles on what CRT is and I still dont get it.

Does anyone really think the average fan is going to understand what their watching.

Its prototype racing but there not really prototypes.

That team over there can come take your bike after the race (did they get that stupid idea from watching Speed reruns of Pinks All in)

That guy who you've never really heard of and hasnt raced in 5 years will be on the same track as Valentino Rossi

Its a clusterfuck that will turn people away from the sport

God help us if these 1000's suck because prototype racing has become protoshite racing

Curve, ur gay for posting that pic.

Jknock, CRT is not that complicated dude. Take somebody's production 1000cc engine, and do whatever the .... u want to it. U get 24 liters of gasoline. Put it in something with two wheels. Race the mothafuker.

Dont get stuck in the "claiming" part. All that means is some other team who thinks u might be a proxy "factory" entry can ask to see a part on ur bike for a fee. This way if u really are a "factory" then some dude with change in his pocket can take a look at ur part that u spent millions developing. The idea is, if u are a "factory" that condition will be enuf of a deterrent to keep u away from entering as a CRT instead of ponying up the big money of a real full factory entry. Its really quite simple.

Did u know the rules for the last two formulas were complicated? Im sure u never read the rule book, neither did i. All i knew is this year they wer 990cc, that year they wer 800cc, and next year they can be up to 1000cc. Most people dont know .... beyond that. They didnt know how much fuel was allowed in the tank. They didnt know ther was a complicated formula if u wanted to make the engine 2,3,4 or 5 cyclinders, etc.

Motogp has got itself into quite a quandary hasn't it.

I think the problem is what to do when the world economy is .... and Honda was leasing a prototype 800 for over 5 million Euro. I had quoted the exact figure in a prior thread exactly suffice to say it is bloody expensive.

Left as is there will be no motogp on the basis of cost and as an ideal I like the idea of pure prototype racing, the industry just cannot sustain it. And unlike formula 1 there is a much cheaper alternative series in the form of superbikes where lap times are only marginally less.

A1GP (the opposition to F1) lasted from 2005 to 2009 before going into liquidation but the opposition series (WSBK) which competes for manufacturers budget and sponsors money has been going strong and getting more so since 1988, it isn't going to disappear anytime soon.

Part of the problem is the quick turn around of technology from prototypes to production in motorcycles (and the Aprilia APRC package or the Ducati electronics are classic examples) and thus the blending of the two even as an interim measure will be the only way to fill a grid in motogp.

F1 doesn't suffer this because we don't have open wheeled cars on the road producing prodigious amounts of horsepower and down force and so on, but one can buy a motorcycle that has comparable performance, and has all the basics, Aluminium deltabox (perimeter) frame, telescopic upside down front forks, single rear shock and alloy swing arm, + the electronics and be on the road on something that isn't that far removed from the 5 million Euro prototype.

The basic layout of the road bike and prototype are much the same. Unless some amazing technology arrives that makes prototypes even faster then the wolves of WSBK are really knocking at the door.

James Ellison aside (who shouldn't be on the same track) the CRT bikes should be the step up for the Bradl. Marquez and Ianone's NOT has been riders like Ellison.

On that basis alone the CRT bikes should have been able to lure anyone from the top ten in moto2 or WSBK but this is where the real problem reveals itself.

Checa or Biaggi are not going to leave the WSBK field where they can be champion of a respectable series to ride the second rung bikes.

The same goes for the moto2 leaders who are looking for a real step onto a factory bike (via a satellite team). Do you then make a rule (yes another complicated rule in the sport) that forces manufacturers to support a number of CRT bikes, to then have a three tiered ascendency to the factory bikes. It becomes a championship within a championship and those on the edge (Suzuki) would likely just pull the pin altogether - how do you force Ducati who haven't made a four cylinder road bike for a number of years into this hierarchy?

The only thing we can do is adopt the stance of eternal optimisim and hope for the best. When DORNA work out that it is a steaming pile of .... they have created I honestly hope the world economies are in a healthier state, otherwise motogp will be the laughing stock of all forms of racing, yes a series that offers points down to 15th place but for a number of races this year haven't been able to put 15 bikes on the grid and are less likely to do so without CRT, you could get a championship point (qualifying rules aside) on a postie bike.

What do you do to fix this?
