Deadly floods strike Valencia, threatening the MotoGP finale

Thoughts are with the people affected by this, apparently over 50 people have died.

The track itself appears to be undamaged but there is considerable damage to the surrounding areas like car parks and access roads.
Obviously the worst thing is that people have died, will or have lost their homes etc.
I would riot if I lived there and the city was cleaned up enough to hold a sporting even as any kind of priority over helping the citizens. Most people have lost their vehicles, the city included, 2 1/2 weeks isn’t just not much time for a clean up bit it isn’t much time to have the city functioning at anything close to normal.

Sad to read this. I’ve always enjoyed my time in Valencia.

What does the MotoGP rules say about canceling or changing the final race for unplanned events? Has this ever happened in the past for a final race of the season?

I'd bet Martin does not want to win the championship with the last race canceled. People will always put an asterisk next to it.
Yeah but they shouldn’t. The calendar, even without Valencia is longer or the same length as it has been previously and there is always a chance that Martin extends his lead to 25+ points.

No one will truly care about it in three years.
I don't put an asterisk next to Mir's championship only because the season was shorter and exclusively in Europe.

The people affected by the storm are of course the most important issue in all of this.
Idk if they could reschedule the championship race on such short notice, I'd honestly prefer a cancelation over delaying the race into December.

Indeed. I was only looking into the psyche of Martin. He strikes me as the type who wants to win it on the track. He's not afraid to put it all on the line.

People do many things they should not. It's our nature. The 2024 calendar is what it is and to shorten it....and I'm not arguing whether or not it should be shortened...but to shorten it will bring out the social media warriors who know best. There are 37 points on offer in a race weekend so Jorge +25 wouldn't seal the deal mathematically.

Obviously the people affected by this should and are first priority. That goes without saying.

If it likely gets cancelled could they run 2 full length races on the Sat and Sun for all classes this weekend in Malaysia? Just a thought so don’t shoot!

Terrible news for the people of Valencia. The race there has a great impact on the area. Hopefully dorna can find a way to give some proceeds to those effect by this. Local business could use the help the race brings to the area, so how can this sport help those people in a time of need?

Just seen it on the news. Looks devastating. This race ain't happening if you ask me.

I would think rider safety would come into play. That's a lot of racing for one weekend.
They can't be so concerned about rider safety considering that Aldeguer's assault on Tony Arbolino was ruled a racing incident.
