Agreed. He was really strong on the Desmosedici. He was faster, if less consistent, than Dovi.

Well there wasn't much he could do in 2016 after they went with the wrong engine for the GSX-RR. BUT, he has performed much better this season given Suzuki's laughable commitment to GP. Booting him for Mir is a mistake IMO and Suzuki is going to regret it. I get he comes with baggage but he can ride and I'd take that over some unproven rookie that everyone thinks is the next hot thing for no apparent reason. Not to say Mir isn't talented but he hasn't even won a Moto 2 race and he's being anointed in the manner he is? That's crazy. They'll just be going backwards again. Should have signed Folger if they wanted a talented rider with no baggage.

Mir is the hottest thing in the paddock since Mav. The buzz track side about him is really high. Although I agree about AI, signing Mir is a statement. Everyone wanted him, we got him. I'd say Mir is low risk reward unknown but the potential is slightly higher than AI. It would be hard not to sign him(Mir) if you were Suzuki.

Iannone always strikes me as being in his best form after contracts are up.
He made a few mistakes when Ducati were choosing between him and Dovi that cost him his seat and once it was decided he was surplus to requirements at Suzuki, he seems to have found another gear.
He has talent no doubt but no point showing it when you're already getting the bullet.

This won't be popular but .......
I stated a month or two back that Ianonne is a contract rider ............ he ticks all the right boxes when his contract is under threat and then suddenly, once signed or secure for a while, he quickly reverts to old form.
Yes he is talented as people have said, but when you have talent you need to use it appropriately in this game and he is just way to inconsistent (contract times excepting) and has shown no real signs of changing that structure (granted, this season he has 3 good results but lo and behold, contract talk time).
I do not subscribe that he will be out of MotoGP in 2 years as this could be the kick in the ... he needs, but then at the same time few people go backward to go forward and, well we are talking Ianonne who seems to want the life of a rock star while racing bikes.
For Ianonne's sake I hope he grabs the chance and goes with it, for Aprilia they have signed a rider with a little X factor, but for the paddock for the remainder of 2018 we have to see if we get angry Ianonne who seemed to do well on the Dukes or I have a contract Ianonne who reverts to old inconsistent form

As I said above your comment, I see it the other way. His worse Ducati form was when his contract was under threat and he looked like he was trying too hard to show how good he was.
Once it was sorted he improved and had some folk were questioning whether Ducati had kept the right Andrea.
We will differ but to me, his best Ducati form was when there was significant talk about who to keep between Dovi and him.
Sure, the majority were saying keep Dovi (and again, this is due to consistency) but during that time he rode as a racer, even winning a race but once announced he again became reckless in some way and inconsistent in others.
It may well have been caused by that extra effort but to me it manifested itself as inconsistency (again) and backed Ducati's decision, with nothing he has done at Suzuki being different (but as I said, judgement can be altered if he now maintains the rage/form)
If he accepts it as the kick in the ..., it is possible for a podium or two if other things align but certainly a few top 6 should not be out of the question as for mine, he is a better rider than others on that bike.
I said some time back that to me, Ianonne needs to have a good, long sit down chat with Rossi about how to meld the attitude of party boy with the mentality of a racer and he needs to listed to Rossi. If Ianonne approached the sport in the same way as Rossi, Ianonne would have had better results and be on a top factory bike (all IMO of course) but he is not and has not, thus he has to only look at a mirror

It ain't Ducati's fault, or at least not directly. It doesn't have to do with the famous Argentinian takeout, either. Back in 2016 Ducati couldn't care less about Iannone nor about Dovizioso. They didn't choose any of the two: a really low (for the standards, of course) offer was put on the table and both were asked if they would have took it. Iannone said no and Dovi said yes.
They had already signed Lorenzo and it was all they wanted at the time.
