Rossi could have retired unchallenged then, and got on with his life, and if his medium term goal has always been to manage a premier class team imo the last 9 seasons have made that goal more rather than less difficult.

Much like Synn, if he has not been amusing himself the last 9 seasons, and with the exception of the first year back at Yamaha in 2013 he certainly doesn’t seem to have been overly enjoying himself given the glorious 10th which he never needed seems to have been his singular obsession and has remained elusive, then it truly has been an exercise in futility.

He would have been better off retiring awhile ago now, I agree. Go out with a title win and leave it at that.

I haven't felt he has enjoyed himself outside of that 2013 season which you mention. Since 2009, it's been nothing but difficulties from the broken leg, Ducati, 2015 when he didn't have enough speed to keep up with Lorenzo. I think he enjoys riding the motorcycles, but the competition side doesn't appear to be fun. Especially as he watches a satellite M1 rider outperform him without too much effort. Rossi is losing his speed. He still has speed, but not what he did. The new two year deal I thought was a mistake for both him and Yamaha.

How much of a sign do they need though.
Yamaha has been a "clusterfuck" since Burgess went. They even lost Lorenzo .... Marquez's only real competitor until Dovi.

You know I even wonder what say Yamaha have in things. Could be that they are just a "factory" bike in name and Yam just supply.
The situation is so oddly biased to rossi that I would not be surprised if to get a Yamaha seat again ..... rossi had to buy his way in and has some controlling interest.

I don’t think Yamaha are awash with money, and struggle to finance the team without the sponsorship money Rossi brings; didn’t they lack a major sponsor at one stage in 2011 and/or 2012?. I guess it is even vaguely possible Dorna kick something in.

The elusive sponsorship dollars are probably what keeps the whole thing going.

Do agree that who knows what they do when he retires. I don't think there will be sponsors lining up to take that title sponsorship, or at least one that would be equal. They lacked sponsors when you mentioned. But the bikes looked a hell of a lot better without that hideous Movistar livery.

Will be fascinating to see how this unfolds when Rossi is gone.

I don't care if he finishes 24th and last, but I just want him to keep re-signing until 2040 just to see the mouthbreathers in agony.

I think it was worse than that when Fiat left.

Why would Yamaha have hired rossi back after the animosity around the time he left and then his very poor showing on the Duc. ... money came in Id say .... now Im wondering was it actually a large enough amount to actually have a controlling interest . Honda wouldnt put up with the .... that is rossi ..... why are supposedly Yamaha?

Why do you think seeing him continue to lose until them after watching him do so for the last 9 seasons would be upsetting for those you dispute?. MM could have 28 titles by then.

Goes to show how little of a fan of the sport you are if you would rather see him keep re-signing in an attempt to piss off a niche motorcycle racing forum than to see a qualified rider take over. Instead that qualified rider is going to go somewhere else and beat Rossi like a rented mule.

The thing is he was happy with winning the 2 titles and left to live the Australian dream which is very different than the American dream at least. Most have to defer obtaining the dream coastal and/or rural property rather longer than Stoner did, although I suspect the likes of Barry managed same a while ago as well.

Even 9 titles were fairly obviously not enough for Valentino though.

I hope his dream includes eating a lot of fiber to keep that poop chute in check.
