Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya 2022

Two really good sessions with perfect weather. Aprilia is looking good. Important info for the weekend:

1. Michelin has brought a new front tire for Catalunya. It's not a new spec to address the temperature issues, its a new symmetrical tire to replace the old asymmetrical tire. Left turns early in the race could catch people out (Bastianini?)

2. Jorge Martin is having surgery after Catalunya to address the nerve issue in his right wrist. He's targeting return as Sachsenring in two weeks. Not sure about that timetable.

3. Crafar was walking the pits and spying on Honda's chassis. He claims only Bradl is running the new chassis. Nakagami is not. Maybe Nakagami is not playing nice with HRC? or maybe they don't have enough chasses?

4. Vinales has changed strategy. His side of the garage is only going to focus on achieving the best times in free practice and qualifying. They will deprioritize race simulation and playing around with race settings. Makes sense since bad qualifying kills his weekends, but it could backfire spectacularly, if he loses 10 places on full fuel. The team are probably betting he will get stuck-in with the leaders and forget about whatever feel issues he's having.

5. Suzuki is experimenting with wheel colors and paint to control front tire temp. No idea if they are seeing results. The white and gray wheels are not visually stark on camera. I barely noticed.

6. Fabio spent all of FP1 running a race sim. He was using soft front and medium rear, IIRC.

I after FP1, Honda said Nakagami was going to run the new frame in FP2 though this hasn't been confirmed. Bradl binned it early in FP2.

Aleix has been strong at the end of races this year but starting from P1 along side Pecco and Fabio, Aleix better be able to stick with them. In any event, Aleix is killing it. Vinales also has good pace in the latter stages of races so maybe starting from P8 will keep in in the hunt.

Rins will be even less a fan of Taka.

A Fabulous ride [emoji41]

Aleix did a couple of nice passes.

Lap count not so much [emoji44]

Wow. First phase of the blinking contest has ended. Aleix blinked! Apparently the timing and scoring tower at the track shows 0 laps remaining for the final lap. Aleix got confused.

Well, that was bizarre. Shades of KRJr’s same mistake all those years ago.

Fantastic performance from Fabio. Shades of Lorenzo. Maybe even better.

Rins won’t be sending Nakagami a Christmas card. Nakagami lucky he didn’t get hurt. Rins not so lucky. I feel bad for Pecco, he barely got tagged but it was enough.

Nice flowing track played to the advantage of the Yamaha in the hands of Fabio. Interesting that the Pramac guys were the only Ducs in the hunt.

What happened to Miller? Pretty good fight back from Mir for a spell there. KTM nowhere.

I think the season will get even more interesting from here on out. Half way there !

What happened to Miller?
I guess he lost interest in being competitive with the Duc now that he secured his future. Still, if I'm KTM I would be nervous if he turns this attitude into a permanent fixture through the remainder of his Ducati contract.

The championship got a lot less interesting now.

Nakagami lost a lot of casual supporters today. Rins still hasn’t scored a point since being tied for the lead, and now he’s broken his left hand. Mir finished 4th from the back. Would have been nice to see what Rins had for Barcelona.

Pecco is another 25 points back. He’s basically out of it with his no-scores at Lemans and Catalunya.

Enea can’t stay upright.

Fabs is looking good. Sachsenring should be another chance to score well.

To be fair, Nakagami just lost it. A racing incident. It just happened to take a couple of people out, one of whom was a championship contender and another who had a clash with Taka a week before.

Listening to comments, it seems that riders who chose the hard rubber expecting it to come in late in the race were disappointed that it didn’t . Zarco and Miller said as much and I think others were affected by grip issues like that. In fact, it looks like the hard rubber never came in at all.

Interestingly, Fabio chose to stick with the softs. It was the way to bet as it turns out.

Fabio was smart, and ran a couple of race sims to check grip. Gives less time to play with settings so I guess he has a good baseline. I guess that was the rea gamble, that his base settings were good enough to run race distance simulations in practice.

Regarding Taka, it was an honest mistake, but an unfortunate one. He effectively eliminated Ducati from the championship picture and he crashed his biggest detractor in the paddock, who will be sticking around next season. Nakagami’s MotoGP career was hanging by a thread. A non-score might have been enough to end it, but he also managed to anger Dorna and Ducati.

Perhaps I’m placing too much weight on a single crash, but I think he not only ended his MotoGP career today, but he also ended any opportunity that may have existed to remain with Honda in any capacity.

Indeed :(

'Rins will begin a program of recovery which will include his wrist being immobilised, regular icing and electromagnetic therapy, anti-inflammatory medication, and rest', read a Suzuki statement.

'Naturally, he will now miss the Catalan Test taking place at Montmelò tomorrow, Monday 6th June. He will undergo further assessments and checks ahead of the next Grand Prix in Germany in two weeks’ time.'

Or he just had a .... ride. He's had them before, as have all riders.

There's no point sugar-coating it, that was a very frustrating way to finish off the weekend. Go again in Germany in a few weeks time
