So you reckon that there's a lot of Donington racegoers who pay about £60 for GA on race day or £80 for the weekend and don't know who the riders are?
Haven't been to Donny for a couple of years but when I was last there, as far as I could tell without walking round with a clipboard asking people if they had a clue what was going on, most people were there to watch the racing and support their favourite riders.
My main gripe last time was the bloody airhorns. Couldn't hear the bikes at all which, for me, rather spoilt the spectacle. That, coupled with the rain (often a feature, even when I went every year
) and the ..... facilities (always bad, but there didn't used to be so many people trying to use them) has made me less inclined to make the trip.
I agree that there are a lot more fanboys than there were in the 80s when I used to watch the Transatlantics or in the 90s for the 500s, but then the average crowd was probably nearer 20,000 than the current 60,000+. It's all part of the price of becoming more big business a la F1. Mind you, at least it means that there are still races to watch, even if the live experience is less about a group of like-minded people watching some bikes on a wet Easter Sunday. The world turns.
I'd still expect that even the fanboys know who the main protagonists are though.
