Massa set to remain in intensive care after he undergoes surgery

Felipe Massa is to undergo surgery after suffering skull damage and a concussion during a high-speed accident on Saturday.

The 28-year-old was hit by a piece of debris during Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying and drove head on into a tyre wall.

Ferrari said the driver was "stable" and that he was conscious, but will remain in intensive care following the operation.

The incident was caused by a part that had fallen off the rear suspension of Rubens Barrichello's Brawn GP car.

The debris then flew up off the track and hit Massa's helmet at speed and with great impact.

Massa had been able to apply the brakes before going off the Hungaroring circuit before hitting the tyre wall at over 120mph.

Massa was attended to by medics at the scene before being airlifted to a local hospital for further examination.

All the best to Felipe Massa.

I heard he'd crashed after hitting debris but had no idea it was as bad as this.

Hope he's OK.

Bad day for F1 today, despite my initial happiness due to Alonso's (light) pole, the news from Massa are quite worrying, last I've heard, doctors say he might have some brain damage. I hope it's not the case and wish him a speedy recovery.

i was watching this & could not believe it! he's lucky he came to enough to brake. really bazzar... best wishs & hopes that he'll come thru ok.

How much you want to bet that this is overturned. Im not sure F1 wants to suspend the local legend for his home race and have 90000 empty seats staring them in the face. Im guessing large fine and Alonzo races.

Well well well.... All of a sudden the F1 championship is alive with action and question marks. What has happened to the Brawn team? They need to start scoring bigger points again, but Redbull are in a seriously tricky situation with two drivers taking points off each other but appearing equally good. Vettel still makes a few mistakes but Webber has found some speed now and i'm very impressed. Trouble is for them that Ferrari and Mclaren have found their feet and might just be quick enough to win Button the title. It was great to see Lewis win again, it would have been a shame for him not to take any victories with the number one plate, but i still think he's out of the title running. Kimi has put in a great drive in the face of so much talk about his future, so that was refreshing, such a shame to see Alonso out so easily though and i think the penalty handed out was incredibly harsh. But its clear that with recent events there is a lot of sensitivity about parts of cars being loose on the track.

Get well soon Felipe Massa, i hope he can make a full and speedy recovery

News about Massa are quite confusing, this morning I read he was gonna be blind in one eye (bye bye F1) now I read he's gonna fully recover. :S

I sincerely hope he recovers fine.

Latest I`ve seen is `no definate conclusion for 8 to 10 days`.Personally I can`t see Felipe coming back which is a damn shame.
