Doctored: MotoGP’s Obsession with Valentino Rossi

I get #22 and Jorge's point, but the Radhaculous notion above means that MM was petulant and immature at Aragon; Jorge was immature and petulant earlier this season; well virtually every rider has displayed the immaturity and petulance to push too hard early. Marco's unfortunate demise was a racing incident. Trying to attach any of Marco's negative traits to this particular incident is nothing but projection.

Agree. At the time I easily made the knee-jerk judgement that it was all down his lack of maturity. He did have a bull-in-a-chinashop mentality, but what killed him was the bad luck of being struck by another bike.

Dubs, you're talking to someone who has bitched endlessly about how safe motor racing has become at large.

I usually take the attitude you have with Simoncelli on MOST fatal racing accidents.

However, Simoncelli I don't share the opinion simply because it struck me as stupidity.

To me, what more matches your idea of Simoncelli pushing right up to the last moment, is what happened to Francois Cevert at Watkins Glen during practice of the United States Grand Prix in '73. Not sure how familiar you are with Watkins Glen, but after the first corner, you head towards the uphill Esses section of the circuit, and then after that you hang a fast right onto the long back straight. Cevert was pushing hard through the Esses, which is frankly a terrifying section in a soft sprung suspension race car, and is daunting to take flat-out even today in cars that do not have a lot of downforce. He unfortunately made a mistake trying to go faster, clipped the curb --and they were curbs back then-- then bounced off the barriers at 150MPH iirc, and went straight into the barrier on the back straight. He wound up getting cut in half by the barrier. But it was about trying to be the fastest as opposed to trying to save a low-side crash.

Perhaps the most ill designed track I've ever seen. They actually ran some club races there til sometimes in the late '70s. Walked the track and the idea of motorcycles there gave me the shivers.

UM...only the greatest human being ever....

"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, 'Wow! What a Ride!"

You have my word, Scout's Honor, not trying to be a ...., but kind of an ironic photo to go with that quote considering he went out with a "bang" of the wrong kind because he couldn't deal with life - even with all the pharmaceuticals. Mind you, been a giant fan of his since "Fear and Loathing" came out and rabidly read everything he wrote. When I wrote for American Book Review, NY Press, The World and other publications I wrote under the Nom De Plume Christian X. Hunter because I was such an immense fan. A more fitting epitaph for Mr. Thompson might have been:

"After all is said and done
Gotta move while it's still fun.
Let me walk before they make me run."

So...Casey Stoner who crashed a fair bit in his career because he rode over the limit is a ..... but Marco Simoncelli who also crashed a fair bit in his career because he rode over the limit is a warrior?

I'm a bit lost here *shrugs*

If I must go there again. His on track antics are not what made him a ......

I guess you didn't read this then...

What's that saying about the point of life is to arrive at the end kicking, screaming covered in marks and crap while explaiming "Wow, what a ride!"?

I was, confirming the quote he was thinking of...I didn't just decide to start talking about HST...

I wasn't implying that you didn't know who he was. I was confused by your statement something like "greatest human being ever" or words to that effect.
He was a great writer but he hardly went out in a blaze of glory. More importantly I was saying that it's a ..... that even a great soul like him could be brought down by depression.

Surely you're not saying there's something really cool and transgressive about sticking a shotgun in your mouth and blowing your brains out?

FIRST OFF, DO YOU EVEN READ THROUGH THE WHOLE THREAD! This all started because I said ....... "YOLO" & most people are ....... ........ So personally, I ....... like the quote because god damnit, I relate to it. I'd rather go out in a blaze of ....... glory than laying in a god damn cushion coffin.

And so ....... what? Why can't I say he's the greatest human being ever? I can't ....... like dysfunctional people? Am I not allowed to think that Nirvana is a really ....... good band because Kurt Cobain blew his brains out? Am I also not allowed to like all the raw emotion in Elliott Smiths albums & think he's a very beautiful person even though he ....... stabbed himself?

So yeah Kesh, depression ....... sucks. But writing & music are the greatest gateways to let out emotion. Emotion that other people might relate to or find inspiration in or seek tranquility in.

Either way, I'm not going to completely blow this forum off topic, because you seem to pick & choose what you ....... want to rant on.

Wow.... I wasn't trying to pick a fight. It was an simple observation. No reason to think that my questions were some kind of passive-aggressive insult. I already agreed with you that he was a great artist. I was merely pointing out that in the end Thompson didn't walk the walk and took the easy way out. That in no way negates the great writing he did. I still re-read his stuff from time to time. Since we both agree that he's great - I don't understand what there is to fight about.

Fair enough.

I felt the same at the time of his accident that it was a mistake on his part trying to ride it out. Yeah it's hindsight in that regard, but would he have tried to ride it out or even been in that situation to begin with if he had a disposition more in line with Jorge Lorenzo?
I dont understand what u mean by disposition. Honest question, because the Lorenzo of 250s is a different Lorenzo of GP, with a few exceptions, namely 2007 and one particular torpedo I remember he made on Nicky (sorry, chalk it up to obsession). Sic is a very interesting topic, and like Stoner, Rossi, Marc, a polarizing one. I happen to fall in the category that he was still too wild BUT I wholeheartedly believe he was poised to turn the corner. It's why im against riders skipping Moto2 (though obviously it's not a fail safe, see Marc). Regarding the specifics of his crash in relation to what might Lorenzo done, ive been racking my mind to remember the race that Lorenzo had a lowside and hung on to his bars. I see it in my mind's eye. I just cant remember right now. But suffice to say it's a racers reaction. Unfortunately it cost Sic his life.

I know what you are saying. Some people are willing to die for what they love. He was one of those people.

There's a difference between being willing to take great risks in sport and being willing to throw their life away for a trophy. No racer is "willing" to die for the sport.

Wow.... I wasn't trying to pick a fight. It was an simple observation.

Perhaps you should take a hiatus and examine yourself. You supposedly never trying to pick fights but are always the center of a .... storm. "Wow".... I do believe you are genuinely surprised, its classic psychopathy. You really are unaware arent you. Your "simple" observations are usually self righteous, condescending, and smug. Maybe thats the problem.

Edit to add: kesh, you dont need to go back and change and delete posts that expose your ...... deMEANor. Deleting the post doesn't actually change your character. You need to do that in real life.
