Doctored: MotoGP’s Obsession with Valentino Rossi

Bopperism at its finest.

If I could, I'd go to an alternative reality where Marquez and Rossi's roles were reversed, and I'd just grab a bag of popcorn and watch all the people who have defended Rossi say EXACTLY the opposite thing :)

You don't need to go to an alternative reality, it has actually happened in this reality previously; in that instance Jorge Lorenzo elected to settle for 4th, albeit with a much larger points lead.

Whenever I waver on all this and think it is perhaps a matter of perspective, there are always crazy boppers to bring me back to my original point of view. They are still arguing in regard to illness vs psychological breakdown in relation to Stoner in 2009 on Crashnet.

Sorry to bring this up again, but I thought it was very interesting Yamaha's statement about Vinales this morning:

MotoGP News - MotoGP: Maverick Vinales confirmed at Yamaha

This is the Yamaha official statement from that link:

"It is with great pleasure that Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd announces the signing of Maverick Viñales to ride for the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team for 2017 and 2018," said a brief statement from Yamaha.

"Viñales, who is presently 5th in the MotoGP Championship standings, will partner 9-time World Champion Valentino Rossi, whose contract renewal was already announced in March this year.

"Maverick Viñales, born in Figueres (Spain) on 12th January 1995, made his World Championship debut in 2011 in the 125cc Class. His racing career highlights include the victory of the Moto3™ World Championship in 2013 as well as 3 'Rookie of the Year' awards in 2011 (125cc), 2014 (Moto2) and 2015 (MotoGP)."

Now, compare this to Yamaha's statement of Lorenzo's departure:

MotoGP News - MotoGP: Jorge Lorenzo to leave Yamaha

"Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. announces that its partnership with Jorge Lorenzo will be discontinued at the close of the 2016 MotoGP season, when Lorenzo will move on to new racing challenges," read a Yamaha statement.

"Since Lorenzo joined the Yamaha Factory Racing Team in 2008, Lorenzo and Yamaha won three MotoGP World Championships (2010, 2012 and 2015), clinched 41 race wins and have been on the podium 99 times out of 141 races contested.

"Yamaha is extremely grateful for Jorge's contributions to its racing successes and looks forward to sharing more memorable moments during the remaining 15 MotoGP rounds of 2016, their ninth season together.

"Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. wishes Lorenzo the very best in his future racing endeavours and reconfirms the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team's full support on his campaign to achieve his fourth MotoGP title.

"Having already reconfirmed Valentino Rossi for 2017-18, Yamaha will announce the future Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team riders' line-up in due course after securing the services of the second rider."

Note the bolded bits. Even Yamaha buy into the ........ "Rossi is a 9 times champion while Lorenzo is only a 3 time champion". That does irritate me I must admit.

It also supports Jumkie's assertion that Lin Jarvis put's Rossi's interests over that of the team.

Good comparison, just shows .... show of yam. Talk about back stabbing there most successful rider of the last 6 years. No wonder Lorenzo is pissed

It says' Since Lorenzo joined the team' just saying! Perhaps Yamaha should have said' Maverick will partner 4 time world champion Valentino Rossi '

See, that's exactly the point Daniboy, you try and nitpick to justify it. Here are the facts:

Regardless of teams, Rossi is a 7 times MotoGP Champ and Lorenzo 3. If Yamaha want to use one marker to set Rossi at, they must do the same for Lorenzo. That's not Rossi bashing, that's me calling them out for lack of fairness.

No justification attempted, I pointed out that in one press release they included the period that the rider was with them and in the other the period that the rider has competed in GP altogether was used, I don't think it's at all dismissive of 99's achievements though. No doubt I'll get called out for saying that and told I'm *insert insults of choice* for giving an honest opinion.

I wouldn't resort to insults Dani, but again it shows how you are trying to covertly justify Yamaha's statement when you know full well the only team Lorenzo has ridden for is Yamaha. He has also been loyal to them, more than can be said of others.

Yes, so WHY?! Why use one yardstick for one rider and another for the other? It's all done to boost the Rossi gravy train.

Is it though? Or did two different people write the press releases, again I don't even think it's worthy of justification in my opinion.

Rossi and the media are obsessed with winning the "10th" title. Realizing his "10th" title slipping away late last season drove Rossi into an ugly meltdown and yet there are people defending it. Hopefully he will never get it lol because I can't imagine what it would be like if he actually gets it.

Bravo, you have probably found the one article since 2009 that doesn't use the words "9 Times World Champion", fair enough. I'll admit that in that example Yamaha used similar wording with both riders.

However, here is a little excercise for you. Type in Rossi 9 World Champion into Google and see the dozens of links to articles that have that in the headline, let alone the article. Then do the same for "Lorenzo 5 World Champion" and see how little reference to him there is of being a 5 times world champion. Hell the only headline that even uses those words together is one that is a quote of Lorenzo saying that himself!

The problem with using that continually, is proven by your exact attempt at defence of it. They "Could" have used the same terminology for Rossi in their article, but they didn't. It is a subtle yet immensely powerful narrative that puts things into peoples minds that Rossi is a god because he has won 3 times the titles Lorenzo has. 9 Vs 3 sounds a lot better than 7 Vs 3 or 9 vs 5 which is what the reality is.

Haha this is hilarious.

Hey Dani, how does Nick Harris refer to the number of titles that every other rider has, and then how does he refer to the number of titles that Valentino Rossi has?

Don't know, he doesn't commentate on the races. Enlighten me.

Quoted for posterity.

He doesn't commentate on the races?

Everyone who follows MotoGP knows who Nick Harris is even if he isn't commentating on the feed they might be watching.

Dani was so quick to tell us how he has been following since the days of Barry Sheene, yet doesn't know who Nick Harris is.

lol

Nick Harris is a dweeb.
