i was watching replays and couldnt see ..... the commentator noted they didnt see a jump.

it was so small if there was a jump was probably due to him rolling the bike and not by him letting go of the clutch.

No, he did not jump the start, that is he did not start or move before the lights went out.
But....... he was not in his grid spot, he was in the grid spot for "6th position when they use 4 bikes per row" (125 & 250cc races)
This position is acutally closer to the start finish line than his 5th position for 3 bikes per row. So technically, with the rules in mind, yes it is classified as a jump start.

Yer, fecking crap
<
I still maintain a marshall should have told him to move across a fraction, especially considering he was one of the first riders back on the grid..

Would you walk onto the grid to tell him seconds before they drop the hammer and explode off the grid ?

Me neither.

Just a simple/silly mistake cost him a podium in my opinion.

What a ....... .......he should be DEMOTED to the 125s....one for being a dumb-.........two for being Australian......three for being a dumb-.... Australian.

The australians have got you so worried you want them demoted to the 125's now?

Hard to argue that antwest is not a dumbshit though, unfortunately. Once might be an accident, twice in a row starts to look like a habit.

To be honest i don't blame west, i was looking at that grid and its very confusing with the F1 markings and MotoGP.

A green flag is not allowed until everyone is in position. When west is not in position the race should never been started without first correcting the position. In that way the organizers themselves also made a fault.

this is a very good point. mabe there is to many lines there to choose from making it to confusing for the less experanced riders.
westy is young and learning, i doubt he will make this mistake again.

Believe me, it's difficult enough to find your right spot after the warmup lap even without two sets of motorcycle markings as in GP.

How hard is it to find a big white dot?

Nobody should have told him, it's his responsibility, and he paid for it.

He's been in 500's and GP for donkeys mate, he should know.

Rules are rules. But, the penalty is too harsh..

The spot he was on seemed logical as he was right behind the #2 guy. But, apparently, the riders on the middle row are staggered to the left and right of each other. Ridiculous. !

All the racing Ant has done has been with four-rider rows..

Sepang has grid markings, as mentioned earlier, for GP, 125s/250s and F1.. There's .... everywhere on the grid and is poorly colour coded.

For a rider who hasn't tested in preseason or ridden at the track in the race last year, im assuming its pretty easy to make the mistake that he did.. Could have just jumped into a 250 spot as a habit from racing in the class from 1999 - 2007?
<

Im guessing he was supposed to be in the grid slot a fraction to his right (see how Stoner is in the right-most slot out of the two to choose from).. thats a pain in the arse..
<
Oh and im also assuming this means he isnt supposed to be lined up directly behind Stoner, but a fraction to the right..

It was harder for all the riders down the middle to pick their spots. In that case West should not have been penalised
<

mind you does look like he got a distance advantage from that .... so I can sort of see why they called it a jump start ..... still I think a stern talking too may have been more apt for this one.

Considering the guys performance is under far more scrutiny than say any rider who has already won a GP .... he has yet to prove himself .... so a good result for him there would have accumulated career gred. for him ..... damn shame really.

It does look ridiculously complicated. I have now seen a picture of them lined up on the grid where it looks like he realised his mistake and has moved back to be level with his correct starting position; I guess it was too late to do anything else. The problem presumably arose because he got ahead of the front row guys in the warm-up lap and lined up before them.

^^^no u dont have to keep formation on warmup lap. like f1.

stoner regularly is the last to line up on the grid despite being on pole or first few rows.

thanks for posting the picture mate, if he should have been in the slot to his right it means he was about half a wheel forward to where he should have been. my bet is no marshals or race direction noticed until after the race started and they looked at footage to see if there were any jump starts.
oh well he learned his lession, i hope he get a good result at valencia to redeam himself.
