So does this mean Lorenzo will honor tradition and the idea of this being a team sport rather than personal marketing interest by running the #1 plate?

I think so. I've been thinking about this today, its interesting. Apparently Lorenzo is running a competition for his fans to enter designs for his number 1 next year. But i saw something today with Lorenzo talking about the sticker he has on for that end of season photo saying its in the style on Wayne Rainey, as he is a friend and the last Yamaha rider to use the number one. I hope he does something like this.

I also read an interview with Pedrosa today where he says he always liked the top 3 running their numbers from the previous season, and that he likes the idea of following tradition in that sense, but said that things are changing now and continuity is more symbolic because it brings the fans together blah blah blah and he mentioned the merchandising aspect. I guess its going more the way of NASCAR, where the number seems to be a big deal.

I say he runs the #1 blinged out plated in gold bedazzled style

Wrong Jumkie the exact opposite. He is having a contest for his fans to design his number 1. Talk about ........

Thanks. If he runs the number 1, I will be pleased. It will mean he respects tradition and is willing to put aside his look-at-me lets market myself attitude.

I agree completely

Ah I see. So the arrogant ....... is recognizing the support of his fans by letting them have input on the number one design? Kinda reminds me when those self absorbed ego tripping KR team asked fans to submit their names to put on their bike. Ego has no bounds, eh Mdub?
<

It's funny, I've always seen it the other way around. The rider carrying the 1 was a little egotistical. To go 'anonymous' in your normal number was not to bignote yourself by saying how good you were last year.

I don't really care one way or another, it's just a number.

Gee you guys

Plain and simple: riders come and go, with age time maturity, some supercede previous "best riders" and then get superceded themselves by an even better rider.

Depending on the quality of the riders around at the time, their longevity in dominance varies.

But the plain simple fact is Lorenzo has put together the best season ever in points. And it was against harder competition than any other rider has had. More for that reason it was the best season of all time.

Most points in a season ever.... 383!

9 wins, only twice off podium with 4ths, against a deep field of competition. Unfortunately it was a year that saw Rossi and Pedro have a self inflicted injury, but nobody can say it would have changed the results for certain. Congrats to him!

fixed it for you....383 points in a season is a statistical fact. "Best season ever" is an opinion held by you and some other people.
<

I think he would have had less points...thus not breaking the points record if Pedrosa and Rossi did not get injured this season.

good job on him earning those 383....it is quite an accomplishment!!

But its been established that Pedrosa's injury was equipment failure and Rossi's was a result of trying to catch Lorenzo ..

How many less points would Rossi have scored in 08 if Lorenzo had not had 4 DNF's and 1 DNS. Bottom line is, you have to have a mistake free year to score the kinds of points that Rossi and Lorenzo did in 2008 and 2010.

They always get insnared with their own logic (or lack there of). Factory, who thinks Rossi's crash was an equipment malfunction, naturally assuming that Jorge would have lost those 4 DNS. When both riders were healthy enough to compete for wins, Lorenzo still had the advantage. (Wasn't that the whole gist of "mundialito"?) But Factory will ignore reality once again. Lorenzo dialed it down a notch because of championship management and engine reliability management. But turned it back up after he secured the title. Consider this, that the only time Rossi beat Lorenzo post leg injury was at Sepang, Lorenzo's title clinching race. The very next race, at one of Rossi's favorite tracks, Lorenzo beat Rossi by a gap of 9.399, almost 10 seconds. The very next race Lorenzo put an exclamation mark on this rivalry by achieving the largest gap all season long from 1st to 2nd, 8.629. This was even a larger gap that Casey Stoner at PI put on second place. But if that was not enough, Lorenzo but a gap back to Rossi at Valencia, the season finale, by 8.998. So how in the world is Factory or anyone else gonna convince anybody that Lorenzo would have suddenly lost to Rossi during those DNS? Even if they would have split two wins a piece, Lorenzo would have matched 373. Factory's logic is perhaps magic, where things are not what they seem, eh?

I could have sworn Rossi beat Lorenzo at Motegi also.....so he beat Lorenzo back to back. To borrow the nickname you thought up....Rossi "Two Times Gused" him!!
<
Of course with your reasoning....those results don't count because Lorenzo dialed it back and played it safe.

Lorenzo's sparkle helmet has again distracted you....
<

As far as the 4 DNS for Rossi and Lorenzo loosing all of them.....it could have happened. I never said Rossi would have taken those for rounds. My point is if a healthy Rossi was in the mix during those races (and the rest of the season) and if Stoner had his front end issue ironed out...Lorenzo may not have swept those races.

Lorenzo did win those races, score 383, and earn the title....these are the facts. You can't say that he would have had the same outcome with each of these if the other aliens were in top form all season...just like Lorenzo was.

Ah yes, stand corrected, I meant before title management for a win. Ah, you bring up Motegi (for a podium). Haha, ok, without rehashing it, I'd concede Lorenzo got beat straight up for this purpose. Even then, you cannot fathom managing the championship right? How long have you been watching racing? Look no further than Valencia, did you see the 125s? Here you have a rider that has been crushing the competition all season, and what did he do to make sure he won the title? Oh yeah, he dialed it back. This is very common and you can pretty much detect it because its so obvious among title contestants. Honestly Factory, how anybody could show their face after trying to make a case that Rossi's crash resulting in a leg injury was an equipment malfunction is so outside the universe of logic that its without joy that I try to reason with you.

So in general terms: if the other riders had done a better job, Lorenzo's performance would not have been so good relatively speaking. Good going, you aren't totally ......... But i ask, what is your point? If Biaggi/Gibernau/Melandri/Stoner/Lorenzo had all been in top form then Rossi would have no world titles at all. But they weren't and Rossi beat them, just like this year the other riders weren't as good as Lorenzo, and he beat them.
