Hard carcass or just the hard tire? They have never had a choice when it comes to carcass. I am certain that the harder carcass was implemented after 2021 due to the delaminating issues and at the request of ktm. The only reason they were necessary is because of the added load of ride height and aero. The benefit was instant to the euro bikes and the decline of Yamaha and Honda. Marc has always chose tires the rest of the field didn't, but that wasn't carcass related just harder or softer rubber.
Isn’t it construction/carcass vs compound ?.
MM often in his pomp rode a soft compound tire and got it to last longer than others. The construction/carcass is I had thought a different thing which has been controversial, including two separate rider votes to change the original tire, to Stoner’s and Lorenzo’s disadvantage as I recall. Michelin even brought the tire which had been Rossi’s preference pre-season to an American round to test, which the other riders including MM thought was nice work if you could get it. I don’t think MM cared because his preference was similar to Tossi’s.

Post 2021 the tire has a harder carcass than previous tires. This is something KTM demanded because their front tire was folding under braking. The other issue was the delamination issue that shortened at least one race that year. Both the folding front and the delamination were caused by added load adding more heat due to ride height and aero. As we see now riders cannot follow eachother for long without the front overheating which would be far worse with a softer carcass. So the softest carcass now is harder than what was used pre2021. So the current tire has facilitated the use of aero and ride height and ruined the bikes that rely on rideability like the yamaha and Marc. Making the racing stale and like f1. If they want to change the racing without changing the rules, change the tire back. Although Honda and yamaha might still be lost since they are trying to develop a bike around the current tire.

Yeh the Honda's were predominantly running a hard front as the medium didn't last for them, this was one of weakness's of the Honda

Thinking about it, you are right. Hard compound, not hard carcass. My bad.

We are both dads, so I'm sure you can understand loss of the ol' memory ;)
