WSBK rd.4: Monza

Max cut accross the line and re-entered the circuit despite knowing the rule

actually i read on another forum that there was a briefing on thursday and the riders were explained they can't cross some white line when rejoining. but Biaggi didn't go to this briefing.

. Following his race spoiling tactics in Race 1 it was quite fitting I thought.

Call it Karma.

What race spoiling tactics?

Surely he just kept making mistakes and unfortuntly for the others had the speed to make up for them!

If he had another bike , he would have finished 7th or 8th with so many mistakes.

Ah, yes. Who doesn't enjoy the lottery of turn one at Monza? Everyone gets a chance to have appendages battered and championship aspirations skittled, it's fun for everyone. And if you're really lucky, you get a chance to play again in race two. Oh, Monza...

Well it does need some form of chicane, fact is they know its there and they did manage to make it through the first race and so did the ss guys.

Max is far cleverer and more calculating than that - (when it doesn't involve following certain race protocol that is). Yeah he repeatedly found himself off line due to his mistakes, but there were occasions that he parked it and I will contentiously add, brake checked Haslam to compensate for his errors - watch the race again. For Christ sake as I said, we're dealing with a rider who once intentionally executed a practise start during live qualifying to upset his rivals laptimes - although there's nothing in the slightest bit clever about that.

There's a pile up like this just about every time they visit Monza. The chicane at Le Mans was altered for this reason. Although, you could argue that it's still a dangerous section.

Wasn't it Smrz who lost his season there in 2009? Broken leg if I remember correctly.

I had the pleasure of watching the race while texting back and forth with Austin. You really do need to update yourself on the latest mobile technology my friend.

Well, it’s too much to list here my thoughts that I shared with Austin, so I'll summarize.

I hate Monza. I repeat, I hate Monza. How the .... does that first turn chicane still exist? How the .... do they justify lawn signs? How the .... do they justify steel railing with grass separating the tarmac and your death? .... Monza.

I contend Leon Haslam has been the best rider two years running; but is getting ...... on 2nd tier machinery. Actually, three years running barring Spies. Put the lad on something established, front-runner Duc, Aprillia, or Yamaha, and watch him win a title. The great battle in race 2 which surely Haslam would have been part of was denied to us all thanks to the insane turn one chicane. .... you Monza!

Biaggi, sure he got ...... out of a result, but he's not exactly blameless. He wasn't the only one to short cut this ridiculous pathetic circuit which offers these side streets (in case your google maps didn't show the upcoming turn needing braking from 1000mph.) But for him not to make a federal gesture of slowing down enough so as not to garner attention from race direction is plumb dumb. Maybe he thought the 20-minute lead wouldn't be enough and couldn't risk bring that down to 10 minutes. But I'm quite happy it happened. It gave us a great race for the win and podium. The down side of course is that Rob is probably in a fetal position somewhere, crying that his once chance at showing how top speed and power really do win races wasn’t in the cards. Biaggi came in to the event as the double winner to elect, and he lost them both. Sorry Rob.

When I'm not rooting for Haslam, I'm rooting for Laverty. I notice that the Brit commentators were rooting for him too; I hope Viper-7 didn't watch the coverage, or we should expect 5 new threads chastising how the Brit coverage is dastard bias toward Brits. (Yeah, yeah, I know the man is listed as Irish, but really, from my ignorant American prospective, he’s a Brit.) Oh, and now that he's won two races, its time to start refusing a few GP wildcards son, this will guarantee your promotion to GP. (Oh, I kid the man, he’s my third favorite Brit).

LeviGarrett, I've said Haga is done. But he impressed me with his dogfight against Michelle. For a moment, he looked like the Haga of old (granted, the other two guys on Aprilias were well ahead of him, but that was only for a moment, as Creamer decided to highside his bike into the stratosphere and Biaggi went sight seeing.) So good on Haga...he ‘almost’ got on the podium.

Max got penalized simple

there was a briefing about the chicane ....

if he wasn't there or not told about it serves the big head right

SIC-boy should have wound him up too and then fooked him up the ... now that would be cause to moan and groan.

Could've been. I believe Neukirchner has lost a season there, and Hopkins as well, if I'm not mistaken.

The natives can correct me if I'm wrong, and he can refer to himself as whatever he likes, but I believe he's from Northern Ireland so, technically the Brit tag works. But I'm certainly not going to get into a debate of Ireland/UK.

Also, I've always been more impressed with Laverty than I have been with Crutchlow. Brilliant performances from him today. I await my lashings from the UK contingent.

No lashings here mate. I have also always been impressed with Eugene. He certainly has the skills to win the WSBK title ( perhaps not this year ). Super smooth, fast and he has the right mental strength and attitude to succeed.

Would have been really interesting to see what would have happened if Cal had stayed on the Yamaha WSBK for another year and Eugene was his team mate. Think Lav would have pushed him hard once he accliamtised.

That said, Cal is doing ok for us UK boys and girls in MotoGP at the minute. GO #35 !!!

Relatively entertaining pair of races this weekend, superb performance by laverty. Pitty Biaggi got the penalty in race two but it wouldn't really be on to let him not follow the outlined procedure just because he had a big lead. As ever Whitham was awful to listen to this weekend, seemingly enjoying Biaggi's downfall offering little respect for his efforts on the basis his bike is fast, its no wonder people say the things they do around here. About the track: There really is something truly excellent and awfully .... about bike racing at monza, it is always a mixed experience when i watch it. That first chicane is nothing but trouble, but i don't know what they are supposed to do about it.

The Laverty's hale from County Antrim Northern Ireland - this is incorrect, they have the flag and nationality wrong. Rea is also from Northern Ireland - as are the majority of Irish Road Racers . Normally when they podium contentiously the UK National Anthem 'God Save The Queen' is played, although internal colonialism aside an ardent Ulsterman will normally claim 'Londonderry Air' ( - 'Danny Boy') as the chosen anthem. Confusingly and for some strange reason they played 'The Soldiers Song' at Monza, which is the National Anthem of the Republic of Ireland.

Laguna Seca usually have the monopoly on podium National Anthem .... ups!! Ask Jorge, Chris Vermulen and Troy Bayliss.

Hopkins was Nurburgring

Thank you. Sorry for that mix up.

The year those two had together in 2009 was something special. My opinion was that Crutchlow was on a bit better machinery that season, but he still walked away at a few rounds. They really were hammer and tongs most of that season. Like I said, I preferred Laverty.

I will be very interested to see what sort of trajectory Laverty's career takes now. He seems to have adapted to the Superbike just as quickly as Crutchlow did, so now what? The same can be said for Laverty, Haslam, Rea, and Camier. All seem to have something special in them. Are they MotoGP world champions in waiting? Probably not, but I think a case could be made for each to have a legitimate go. Then again, there are lots of guys in Moto2 with the same argument.

I guess where this ramble has taken me is that for the first time in quite a while, there seems to be a generation of young SBK riders who are good enough to fight for a World Superbike championship and could well spend the next decade doing it without ever getting their chance at MotoGP. A generation of Aaron Slights (thanks for the book, Mark).

You're confusing me. Am I right or wrong? My understanding has always been that Laverty is from Northern Ireland but the World Superbike series got the info wrong and just marked him down as Irish and Laverty was never really bothered.

Laverty (like all his family) races on an Irish licence. He probably also has an Irish passport. That is a discussion which would take forever to resolve, and would end up involving William the Conqueror.

I'm sorry Arrabi, blame it on my lack of sleep, 3 hours in 2 days, but I didn't understand a ....... thing you just said.

About Laguna Seca, we Americans classify all Euros the same. So playing an Italian anthem (whatever the .... that is) to a Spanish anthem (whoever the .... cares) is of no consequence. About mixing up the Aussies and the Brits, c'mon, you can't really blame us for that, both under the Queen, right? Both use the word "mate" profusely, right? And correct me if I'm wrong, but the only real ethnic difference is that Brits are gentlemen and Aussies are convicts, right?

If Spies wins, I'm going to get the circuit to play "Oh Canada"

ok, i hope ur not standing next to the sound tech when u do it. Btw, it wouldnt bother me too much, Spies sports the Texas flag, which to me might as well b another country. Canadians r subjects of the Crown, r they not? If, they didnt sound so much like Americans, i'd lump them in as some variety of Brit (obvously a lower form of course).

Btw, when i say we lump all Euros, obviously that doesnt apply to Brits. In the US, you could cus us out, and as long as its in a Brit accent, we'll think its cool, if not honored.
