If we use the logic of the deserving of rides being down to current performance on a poorly handling bike, there are at least a couple of riders that are currently in MotoGP that don't deserve it. 0.o
Given that he runs the winningest satellite team over the last 10 or so years, Herve Poncheral would have his pick of riding talent. So it would seem that, given his consistency and his penchant for spotting talent, that he knows something you lot don't about the qualities of Bradley Smith.
Looking at his pedigree, it doesn't say World Champion, but then less than half the field has that against their name...
2006 - Debut year, Rookie of the Year
2007 - 10 top-ten finishes, first podium
2008 - 3 poles, 4 podiums
2009 - Picked by Aspar (another smart talent-spotter) 2 wins, 9 podiums, 3 poles, second in the championship
2010 - Again st Aspar, 1 win, 6 podiums, 3 poles, 4th in the championship
2011 - Signs with Tech3, charged with developing the Mistral 610, 3 podiums
He is on what is probably the least funded and developed bike on the grid - considering that everyone else scoring any points is on an FTR, Suter or Kalex chassis, IMO he is doing alright.
At the end of the day, I will let my expertise take a back seat to the likes of Poncheral, Martinez and co. They see something in him, to the extent that he is given a three-year contract!
Any lack of current form is down to the bike. Tech3 just haven't got the resources for the R&D that FTR, Suter and co have. Despite their lack of resources, Smith is currently in 8th place, behind a raft of Kalex and Suter chassis. (Iannone is on a Speed-Up chassis - which is a modified FTR - different swingarm).
