Cool, now that my kids are grown and gone, my wife wants to pull up stakes and do something off the wall. She can find a job anywhere and just wants to go somewhere different. Probably not as different as Thailand, but wants a change. Im the complete opposite, burrowed in like a tick in my comfort zone.

I'd go with the wifey... I've decided that change (getting out of the comfort zone) is what challenges us in mid-life and helps to keep us younger feeling and forever learning!

B does not imply A.

Morevover, A is contrary to general scientific consensus.

In the US, science has become politicized. Here, 'man made' Global Warming/Climate Change is in dispute because the political conservatives favor big business, who have spent money on the propaganda machine. Its astonishing, but most political conservatives here believe its a hoax, while political liberals believe the science.

Man, don't even get me started.

What do you define as 'socialist'?

Thats easy

Pov, I like you, but much as it galls me, I have to agree with Jumkie. Despite his belligerence, argumentativeness, and sheer blooody-mindedness, there is within that confused sozzled persona an uncanny intuitiveness and understanding of the world as it is. Here is a brilliant post from an Australian forum. It is how I believe it to be. Pov, for those like yourself, that have been fed on a philosophy (or religion ) from birth, it can be very hard to understand the forces at work..........................

Let me give you my condensed global economics for dummies. The Right has dominated the planet for some decades, mostly by subverting or attacking countries of different economic systems and imposing their neo-liberal, market fundamentalist, hyper-individualistic and rabidly anti-collaborationist system across the planet.

As a result global inequality has grown rapidly, with more and more wealth in the hands of the rich. The rich, being insatiably greedy, have preferred investing in financial speculation, where they have invented new means to leverage a mole-hill of capital into mountains of debt, entirely created out of thin air and hedged about with 'derivatives' once putatively a type of insurance but long since become simply devices for quasi-larcenous speculation and manipulation. The rich have gathered together into hedge, wealth and vulture funds, where the weight of their money power trumps that of all others, the true meaning of 'leaving it to the market'.

The rich got carried away over the years, what with Alan Greenspan topping up the punch-bowl with free money every time it looked like the hyper-bubble was about to pop. Various highly contrived bubbles are currently deflating, but the rich refuse to follow neo-liberal theory (that's for losers, and was always a 'convenient untruth')and suffer losses for over-ambitious grifting. No, it is much better to have their political employees bail them out (to the tune of 29 trillion in the USA, so far) and liquidate society instead. So the serfs get high unemployment, falling wages, housing values deep underwater with mortgages unpayable, shrinking conditions, huge 'give-backs', social welfare retrenchment and increasingly contingent and precarious employment without any benefits or health insurance, whatsoever. Conditions in European states, like Greece, where the self-inflicted social euthanasia pf 'austerity' is the new sado-religion, are even worse, and our turn will come here, in due season.

And what is the response of the ruling global parasite classes to this economic debacle and implosion? Why a demand, mediated by their wholly owned propaganda system, the MSM, for 'More, more, more' of the same. More 'labour market reform' ie destruction of unions and ripping off of wages and conditions. More 'tax cuts', for the deserving rich, of course. More war, so good for business and crucial to see off the Chinese menace. More of everything that got us into this pickle. No ecological remediation, no renewable energy, no empowerment of workers in the workplace, no increase in welfare payments-none of these because they benefit the undeserving 99%. No just more pandering to the rich, and a rapid descent into economic pandaemonium.

A lot of that is 100% correct, and affects individuals who have not done any planning whatsoever, and have been financially irresponsible throughout their entire lives. Just because someone is willing to loan you money, doesnt mean you should take it. Individual greed has played as large a part in this mess as anything. A good example is my youngest daughter. After graduating from college, she took a job on the ground floor of a local company , while her friends kept hanging out for middle management, because starting out on the ground floor was beneath them. Guess what,3 years later, many of her friends are still looking, and bitching about being the 99%, and she is in middle management, moving up 3 times in 3 years. After she and her new husband saved enough money, they started looking to buy a home. When she went to finance , the loan officer offers to loan her 3 times the amount she had set as her limit. This is where greed, ego, and irresponsibility usually sets in. She stayed true to her plan and purchased a smaller home that fell within the guidelines she had set. She didnt have to have it all now, she understands that you work your way up to that dream home. I have no doubt she will someday have it, and will be in a position to keep it.. If people would just slow the .... down, play the system, quit living above their means, this thing will work. Quit financing homes for 30 years to make them fit in your budget, quit financing cars for 5- 6-7-8 years. If a car payment is to high for you on a max of 48 months, your looking at to much car. If you have to go 30 years on a home loan, your looking at to much house. Quit using credit cards as income supplements to keep up with the Joneses. Like a bunch of addicts, society got hooked on what they convinced themselves was cheap money, and now like a bunch of addicts, they are going to have to rehab. No one forces you to do the stupid things you do, quit blaming others for your problems, you made them, they are yours. Sounds old fashioned i know, but a little common sense and humility never ever goes out of style.

I agree with you Pov our kids are OK 'cause we've taught them well. But there's one more thing... Are we to turn our backs on the children of parents who didn't teach their children well? Do you believe its OK for the government not to teach life skills in schools (true home economics) and to pander to the shysters who offer up 3x loans requested, 30 mortgages, 8 yr car loans? Is it OK for overzealous financial sector to not only offer, but push, these toxic debts onto those least able to afford them or even understand the position they are getting into? Can't we raise up the whole society by applying that little common sense and humility a little less selfishly?

You failed to address the most obvious, that YOU as an individual have voted for the party that favors the sharks that have made all the pitfalls and predatory lending aided by sophisticated dubious practices that were offered to your daughter, and in the end, were bailed out by Joe tax payer. Sure, you are for personal determination and business hazard (in theory and rhetoric only) but in practice, you specifically favor big business, who have NOT been made to suffer business hazard, these are the institutions you give power to, the ones who have been doing the predatory lending. You blame the individual who has taken these irresponsible loans, but what has happened to these people? They have lost their homes and all the money they paid, that is, they got their recompense for their irresponsibility! In that time, the banks have retained the asset, got their opening and closing cost to buffer all losses, then written off inflated losses against tax liabilities, and if that wasn't enough, then the remained inflated loss was covered by the bail out. They have twice gone to republican administrations and said, if you don’t bail out the financial industry, the world will collapse. This was the reality that the current president inherited! When the current administration proposed tough regulatory law, the republican party obstructed and obstructed. They cry that regulation is anti-American and anti-Buisness and anti-jobs, and you believe it because its republican telling you. Of course they would, they meant to protect their cronies. And what we ended up with was a toothless legislation. It reminds me of your now famous and infamous cowardly boycott of the sport.

This is the big business YOU support. Because they have convinced you that Lazy Affair (not a typo) and Capitalism is right and patriotic and anybody who thinks otherwise is a "socialist", or unpatriotic, the word they have told you is worse than 'terrorism'. You buy this ......... You vote for them, and they continue to fleece the middle class. You love to point to social programs as the reason the country is failing, but that is NOT were most of our budget goes, it goes to maintain the military complex that your party protects. The president wanted to cut it significantly and then came the calls from the republicans that he was 'weakening' America. WTF, the US military spends more that the rest of the entire world combined! You hate on labor unions who get paid fair wages, but you rather have them working like Chinese workers in favor of the executives. You vote for a party not interested in governance for the people, just power grabbing. You hate immigrants, but I don't see Americans lined up to work for .... under .... conditions to allow you to buy an orange for 15 cents. The list go on and on....

Your political views are popular in The South and religious quacks, for a reason. Because they have used your ignorance and paranoia against you. And your vote has continued to .... the rest of us over.

I thought this was a thread about Antony West losing his MotoGP ride?

Depends on what you call turning your back. Let them starve to death, no, but beyond that, they have to learn that irresponsible behavior has consequences. Teaching them government will be there when they .... up, will only lead to more .... ups . There are people out there whos priorities are just ....... out of whack. They are 4-5 months behind on 2000 dollar house payments, yet current on the 700 dollar Lexus payment. Why in the hell would you not let a car go to save your house. Appearances. You can walk away from your house and move to another neighborhood and no one is any wiser to your situation. Dump the car and show up for work in a 98 Accord and everyone will know whats up. Is it OK for financial institutions to offer 3 times what you asked for, sure, it is up to you not to take it. Again, personal choice, Like ole Clint used to say, A mans got to know his limitations. I am all about personal choice and personal responsibility. If you ...... up and bought more house than you can afford, drop back and start over. Swallow your pride, move back to that 500 a month .... hole apartment and dont make the same mistake again when the time comes. This ........ of government allowing people to stay in homes they have not made a payment on in years because of a clerical error in the foreclosure paperwork, is well, ......... It is slowing down the recovery of the housing market and is teaching people that its ok to be squatters. I dont know what they teach in school these days, but im assuming math is still on the menu. Basic math and just a tad of common sense should tell you anything you need to know when making a financial decision. Unfortunately no one is teaching common sense anymore.

Socialism breeds more corruption than capitalism. Make the people government dependent.

Recent (and past) evidence would suggest that many capitalists don't mind being dependent on the government when straitened. Capitalise the profits, socialise the losses.

Stief, Mike, haha! Good .... boys!
