Rossi himself comments on the negative suggestions about Stoner:

"There's no doubt that they deserve the title, Casey Stoner & all the guys from Ducati, in particular Filippo Preziosi. They have done an excellent job, and so has Bridgestone. I don't think that I've lost the speed or the form to win, so I don't understand what all those suggestions are about."

what else can he say.
i think he has learned to get his comments in first before the media run a mock. you can bet theres a few aussie jurno's just waiting to slate him for a comment that could be taken as negative.
rossi always has been a good winner and looser but the media have painted a bad picture of him in the past to sell there papers.

I thought that the "tall poppy" syndrome was an Australian issue??

Why on earth the local media would want to slag off a local multi world champion is beyond me!!

Now that's a tough crowd to please

The irony for me of the this whole situation is that Rossi was the one that blocked or stopped Casey coming to the Factory Yamaha team, even though Burgess recognized the Young Aussies potential.

well put it this way, any slight remark made against biaggi or gibbers in the past was blown out of all proportion especially in rags like mcn, im just saying he has learned over the years no to give the wankers anything. trouble is they will now slant what he has said to be throwing in the towel.
to answer your question, your local media would "slag off" a multi champ to big up there home boy even more. come on mate, you read dont you ??

Roger, i see your point about the media trying to bring Rossi down because its pretty standard behavior in the papers. But you have to consider that when Rossi is media favorite the nice things he has said are also going to be blown out of proportion, so maybe hes not as nice as some people think!! Most things printed in press need to be taken lightly, because they will give you the angle they want you to take (usualy the most extreme possible).

One things for sure, rossi has noticably matured with his media behavior over the years, from the things he said about Biaggi to the way he tried to play down the Pedrosa rivalry is a large difference.

I guess that sometimes our media do exactly that, but not usually to sportspeople as they're usually viewed as gods in their own right down under...
<

To be honest though, I can't recall reading/seeing/hearing any Rossi slagging through the aussie media at any stage of his career... that's why I was surprised to hear that the situation is different in Europe!
<

You'd think that they'd cut the man some slack... it's not like he hasn't been trying!

As many have pointed out, motogp is much bigger in europe than australia or the usa. There isn't usually big coverage in the general press in australia. There is more interest now that stoner is doing well, and there was previously in the gardner and doohan eras, but still not huge coverage. Rossi even in australia to some extent was bigger than the sport and to my knowledge has always been universally applauded by the press. The mood is mostly still amazement and joy that stoner is doing so well, particularly against the great rossi.

You may be surprised, but stoner is humble in the australian press. As recently as 2 weeks ago he said his hope at the start of the season was top 5, and that he didn't dream of doing so well.

I do agree we can do without name-calling and petty nationalism. Vermeulen now seems to be developing into a top echelon rider, so given toseland's achievements in superbikes relative to him I think it is entirely reasonable to expect good things.

I agree Michael. I haven't seen any bad press or diparaging remarks about Rossi. He has always been held in high esteem here ... you only have to look at the crowds at Philip Island when he wins there (ie all the time) how much he is loved by the Australian public!

.... I called my dog Valentino (in hindsight it would have been easier to call him "Mick") ... I can tell you it sounds bloody stupid when I'm yelling out his name to stop barking! Luckily he responds to "46" as well!
