So he might be retiring....why did i have a feeling this was possible?

Here is google translators version of the news we got today in Spain.

Surf Grand Prix in Jerez MotoGP ™ has left us the first victory for Casey Stoner on Andalusian soil but even more significant news in the pilot environment. Reigning world ponders his retirement at the end of the season. Casey is tired of the pace of MotoGP and its only desire is to spend more time with his family in Australia. Honda would have received notice of Stoner during the weekend in Jerez.

Sixteen races, ranging from Estoril to Valencia, are the ones that can get to Casey Stoner in the MotoGP World Championship ™. According advances the magazine Solo Moto, "the world number one is pondering his future with the possibility of hanging the monkey at the end of the season. One possibility to win over whole days.

Casey, who has recently become a father, want to return to Australia and live a quiet life with his wife and daughter. At 27 and 14 abroad, Stoner is tired of the pace of life that has been in Europe and the long periods (9 months per year) of competition. Neither the change in Switzerland by Monaco has managed to convince him.

Livio Suppo, Director of Communications and Marketing, HRC, told our fellow Italian Sport Mediaset, said "with Casey all scenarios may be realistic. Know of his character. Stoner is a different driver to rest."

During the Grand Prix of Spain was in Jerez Colin Stoner, father and representative of the pilot. According to different sources suggest, Honda officially know the position of Stoner. The intention of the team is to renew the contract for at least another season. This 'game' would seek a replacement for quality. But they know that the last word belongs to the Australian economy by way not going to convince.

Last February the first child born Alessandra marriage to Adriana. From the first time Stoner has changed its schedule to spend as much time as possible with them.

In Jerez lived another example of that premium for Casey family above all. But that was in anticipation flew to Switzerland for a few days at home before focusing on the appointment of Portugal: "I have a few days to rest and be with my coach, working a bit with his arm and spend some time with Ally" he said in Repsol his blog.

Throughout the month of May Stoner and Honda will be re-set to close or not to renew his driver number one. In case of withdrawal the team would activate the plan B: Maybe Valentino Rossi is on the agenda?.

320lDave (can I bump ya up and call ya Mr. 420?) it is the beginning of posturing for contract negotiations. Stoner (his lawyers, biz manager) say Casey's retiring and HRC opens the purse-strings a little wider!!! Standard contract time ........ - we're gonna hear a lot of it in the near future!!

Sorry, I forgot you are from Spain. 420 is a north american euphemism for smoking marijuana!

I don't know what any of this presages, and have considerable scepticism given the origin in the spanish press , both in terms of the reliability of that press in general and the strong likelihood of more than a little wishful thinking concerning him retiring, but I don't see him threatening to retire to up his money. If you recall he was willing to accept less money from ducati if they cut his media commitments.

Stoner wants a 1 year contract, Honda want 2. Stoner doesn't like the direction MotoGP seems to be heading. Stoner doesn't strike me as an individual who wants more. I think he would be fine with what money he's got now to live a life of happiness away from the spot light and daily grind of a professional athlete.

Suppo more or less states that contract negotiations have started here. A lawyer or business manager would be negligent if he/she didn't play the game. Leaking a little rumour here and there to an overeager press is a classic opening gambit. Don't think Casey has anything to do with it other than spelling out his requirements to his management team.

If he did retire, then good for him. I'd miss seeing him ring the neck of the RCV, but I also miss seeing Rainey, Schwantz, Doohan, Gobert and Craig Jones!

Marc does seem to ride a bit like Stoner. I don't care what nation, what team or what bike, just want to see someone that likes riding just past the limit.

(Jorge does, but is much like Sarron in that he is so smooth it's hard to tell he's trying!)

Don't think he'll retire at the end of this year. But I think he might retire at the end of next year.

Stoner can retire when ever he wants for what ever reason he wants. Its his life. However, his legacy will be debated, just like now Rossi's is being debated. I suspect if he does leave early, it will reflect just how harsh his fans are now proposing Rossi's legacy is "tainted".

I bet Jorge would buy him a nice gold watch and give him a pat on the back. Might even get Pedrosa to chip in on the watch.

Not really. Jorge wants to beat the best out there, and you're implication of wanting to take the easy rode is a ........ and ignorant view on what makes champions tick. Even when Stoner had his "mystery" illness, the Anti-Christ formerly known as Valentino Rossi expressed worry about Casey leaving the sport early after it appeared that it was a serious absence. These guys want to be the best by beating their best rivals.

Fair play to him if he wants to retire. He's achieved everything I imagine he ever set out to achieve...all he has left to do is break records...most wins, poles etc...which to some people doesn't mean anything. He's got a family and seems like the type of person who would be happy spending all his time with them. I don't want him to retire though...he is something special riding that ride there's no doubt about it...could achieve a lot more yet if he wanted to.

Yes but all future champions will be judged on whether they could have beaten Stoner if he had continued on rather than retire at the top of his game.

Jorge, Pedrosa, and Marquez vs. no one. Just in time to reduce the number of races on the Iberian peninsula from 5 to 3. Great timing. Maybe Iannone will come around.

Casey is about the only person on the face of this planet who I don't suspect of trying to increase his wage earning potential with a holdout. Seems like the kind of guy who will work for peanuts (relatively), and demand a $10M bonus for winning the WC. He demands equitable meritocracy with no emphasis on social or employment convention. That's how Casey strikes me.

Therefore, if he has little desire to race, he will certainly not continue racing b/c that is the expectation based upon his performance. No, someone will have to inspire him to race, by cutting him loose of his obnoxious sponsorship obligations, and letting him spend far more time at home.

This. Spot on Lex. He loves the racing, but hates the sponsor & media commitments which go with it. I think the majority of sportsman feel the same way but the lure of the money is greater than the inconvienience of sponsor demands for most.
